I'm just beginning to stamp and love it so far. The only set I have so far is Little Hellos. I'm hosting a SU party in a few weeks and was wondering what sets all of you would suggest purchasing for a newbie to stamping. What sets do you use the most and feel you've gotten your money's worth out of them. TIA.
I like all of the little backround stamps. As far as sets, I think it is called All Wrapped Up - the set with the jar and the Accessories set, that is a fun set. I want to get Terrific Tulips or a versatile flower set to add to my growing collection. I also love Loads of Love, but it was only in the Winter Mini.
It doesn't really matter where or what you start with, you will end up collecting many many more sets just because they are so fun.
I love Sketch an Event. It's so versatile. I love in Full Bloom too. And the Watercolor 2 step sets. They look really impressive but are so easy. Oh and Lovely as a Tree. I was hesitating on this one and only got it when it was half off. Boy I have used that one so much and for so many different things. Check out the gallery on that one!
I'd have to say Shapes and Shadows-this is my favorite set now! I have only been stamping since the end of last year. I also like Stipple Celebrations for its versatility. Good luck!!

My suggestion is peek at the gallery and see what you like. I know when I first started everyone told me get background stamps (like basic set) and bitty bolds casue they are so versatile... but I think they are ulgy and I NEVER use them! Get a set the appeals to your personality if you like shoes, get steppin style, if you like dogs get puppy love etc! I think you are more likely to use them that way!
I think going to the gallery is a great idea! I always do that before I decide on whether or not to get a set! I just got Shapes and Shadows and Simply Circles, and I love them! Another one of my favorites is Love Without End. You'll want to get some Stampin Spots, so that you can have lots of colors and decide which are your favorite before you invest in the big pads. It would be great to have a saying set too, like All Year Cheer I or Vogue Verses. If you prefer the coloring book technique, then I'd suggest Greetings Galore and the watercolor pencils, some markers, or the pastels and some blender pens. With Greetings Galore, you can cut and mount the sayings on the sides of the stamps, which makes it more versatile. I hope this helps!
I agree with basketwilma...Tags 'N More was a great beginner set for me. Fun, whimsical, and versatile. A Greeting For All Reasons was another first set of mine...I've gotten a lot of miles out of that one. Ohh, and any of the All Year Cheers are great too. Good luck and happy stamping!!
My recommendation for first set would depend on how many ink pads you have. If you don't have many ink pads I would avoid the solid image stamps as those are more dependent on different colored inks. In that case I would go with something more of an outline image (In Full Bloom, Nice & Easy Notes) that you can color in with a variety of mediums from color pencils, to watercolor pencils, to markers or pastels. That is the most economical way to get a variety of colors without having a ton of ink pads. If you are drawn to solid image stamps I would definitely get a VersaMark Pad and a set of pastels. My other favorite set is Mini Mates. Those stamps are small enough to color in with a marker and cover a variety of occasions.
My favorite versatile set is Spring Garden, also solid like some of the other sets folks have described and does just as well for a happy birthday in brighter colors as it does in more muted tones. Wish I had Terrific Tulips, that's a beautiful set. And don't forget some of the sets in the Spring mini since those are only available a short time. I am still looking longingly at Winged Things.

If you're looking for greetings you can't go wrong with All Year Cheer I -- I use it all the time. I also love Wonderful Words, it goes with almost any style.
I'm also a big fan of the big background stamps -- I love Canvas, French Script, and By Definition.
I second the nominations for these sets for a beginner: A Greeting for all Reasons (A great mix of sentiments and seasonal images) Sketch an Event Tags and More Sincere Salutations (or one of the All Year Cheer sets)
A floral set, maybe two-step ones like Roses in Winter & Terrific Tulips
Search the gallery for these sets and the others that are suggested here and make a wish list!
I would start with a word set like All Year Cheer I and a floral or background set. This covers all occasions and are easy and fast to create. Also don't forget to order Ultrasmooth White CS and maybe a sample pack of paper from a color family that meets your needs.
Good luck!
MINI MATES!!! It has a ton of stamps you can mix and match the sayings with the images. VERY versitile in my opinion and one of the very first stamps sets I ever bought. I still reach for it all time!!
