i prefer the standard A2 size (5.5 x 4.25)
others like all kinds... don't limit yourself tho. try them all and see what works best for YOU!
i do like the square cards of most any size. square envelopes require extra postage so just put them in a regular shape envelope if you want to avoid that.
i have made a few that are 3 x 6 that will go in a regular letter size envelope (much cheaper envelopes)
and i would like to try one that fits into a business size envelope too.
There are so many great sizes to play with. All the sizes listed above are great. Square cards are my favorite right now...of any size. Some do cost more to mail so I limit the amount I make for mailing.
Have fun experimenting! Changing sizes every once in a while brings on new and different creativity ideas in my experience!
3 1/2 by 5 is nice because you can cut out 3 cards from a 12 x 12 inch sheet of designer paper for background, and get 3 cards out of 12 x 12 inch sheets, they fit a bill pay envelope, but not sure where else you get envelopes for that size

I just choose an envelope from the heap I've collected and fit the card to that size. I don't know any dimensions, maybe this shows what a novice I am, but I just cut the paper to fit the envelope. Is that not the right way to do it?
