I love the old Stampin Up Colors! I have the complete set of Bold Brights and was working out a way to get the other color families. I do not have them yet. The question is...should I purchase the stampin spots or full size pads? The spots are cheaper and would need to purchase the refills as well. What is your opinion?
How much space do you have? Spots take up less space than full sized pads. How much do you plan to use them? Pads will hold up longer (and hold considerably more ink) than spots. Does it bug you to ink up a stamp with a spot?
Just a couple of things to consider. I have the full sized pads as they work with my stamping style. However, I do pull out the few spots I have periodically. Spots are easier to travel with too, so if you go to a lot of crops, spots are quite handy.

As a demo, here is my opinion, for what it is worth. If you really, really like the old colors, but them with the reinker. However, I seriously doubt that you LOVE all of the old colors. Really look at the color charts again and decide which ones you cannot do without..for me it is Almost Amethyst and Mellow Moss. Those are the two colors (out of all the other colors) I will definitely keep. I'll buy 2 reinkers for each color, a marker (I already have 3 sets of markers), and 2 packs of paper. Since I will not be demo-ing these colors, that's probably enough to last for several years. By then I may be tired of those colors. Good luck with your decision. I think the new color pallet is a little heavy on pinks and reds, but I am excited about the change....challenging my creativity to come up with new color matchings!
I've always preferred the spots over the full size pads. I have Bold Brights, Earth Elements and Rich Regals. I will be buying the full set of reinkers for all three as I didn't want to try to piece together "what's going vs what stayed". I'm not entirely happy about this - but I do like the colours so it's what I'm going to do.
The only downside to the spots is I have tried to use one to ink up a SU rolling stamp. I don't use them much but if you do you might want to stick to the full size pads.

spots are a great way to get all the colors in a less expensive way. But if you use a color alot - you might find the full size pad easier. Maybe get the spots and later a few of the colors you use a bunch you can then get the full pad?
Personally I wish I would have been told about the spots when I first started stamping. I would have bought the spots for sure. This way I would have only bought the full size ones I used frequently. I had to have all the colors and I have almost all 48 plus some in-colors. Had I only bought the spots I would have only the large ones I really liked and would only have to buy reinkers for them. I never thought my desire to stamp would wain but it did so think long and hard on your decision.
I like the spots except for when inking up full size background.
I was pretty freaked about the color changes, but I sat down last night with the charts and did some comparison. I then made a list of all of the pads that I have and next to it put if I have reinkers. Then I went through and typed in which of the new colors I thought I could use instead without much difference. The only ones that I really will need are the purple ones, lovely lilac and lavender lace. I'm feeling much better now.
I'll bet in a year's time we'll all have new favorites and "musts haves" and the old favorites and "must haves" will be sitting unused. I'd play Santa here... make a list and check it twice before spending a lot of money. Once the new colors hit the galleries...

i like the spots at home. they come in a nice box and i can carry all the colors to my dinning room table in one hand. less to get out and put away. i turn the stamp image side up and place it on the table, then tap tap tap the ink onto it (with big pads i put pad down and tap stamp onto it). when i do a demo, if i have both spots and full pad, i bring both so there is less waiting and people can try out both types. if im inking up a large background stamp, i always use a full size pad, but if you do that rarely, try the spots.
hope that helps
oh yea, forgot to mention that spots will be available in new colors too.

there are going to be a LOT of full size old pads for sale. so you might want to wait til July. Or, if you really really LOVE the old colors, get the spots. Unless you brayer a lot.
I'm undecided on your behalf!

LOL!
Good point about brayers.
I have all the colors in full pads but only because I was kinda OCD about having empty spaces in my Color Caddy. *sigh*
I hate the spots. With passion. The only reason I have some black ones is 'cause they're cheaper and I can have many to use at my workshops and classes. I have no patience to ink up a background stamp with those. I have all the classic inks in full size and, admittedly, don't use all equally often. But if they were spots - I would never use them. I guess it depends on how much room and disposable income you have. Plus, it depends on how often you stamp and how much ink you expect to be going through. Personally, I would definitely buy full size pads in colours you love the most (be it in July from people getting rid of them, or now from SU), especially if they are carried over, but that is me. Dear, I have a feeling we're not really helping with your dilemma. Sorry! :-)
I just don't like the spots as much as I like the full sized pads, the bigger pads are just more convenient because the stamps don't have to be tapped around as much to get enough ink on them. It is a purely lazy reason, but that is my reason! LOL
I recommend trying out the spots first to get a feel for which colors you like and will use. I'm glad I did it that way first becuase I bought the craft spots of Soft Subtles and Earth Elements and out of all 24 colors I've really only used one and haven't even opened most of them. I think I'm going to sell both sets of spots and invest in a new stamp set!
My opinion is to really think about what the new line of colors is and only buy colors that you really feel aren't being replaced with new colors or that you really love. I think that given the fact that you won't be able to buy coordinating paper, those colors won't be used in designer papers anymore and that most of the colors aren't being used by other stamping or scrapbooking companies currently, you might not use the colors as much as you think you will. At first, I was freaked out by the news but when I looked at the colors they were retiring, I realized I haven't used that many of them anytime in the last couple of years. You will still have color after July 1, it just may be slightly different shades and different color combos that might look more appealing when people start to create with them.

You need to ask yourself if you mostly stamp outline images and colour them in or if you use solid images. I, personally, have the spots and I rarely reach for them anymore. I mostly use black ink (non-SU as I find the SU black kind of purple) and colour in. I do use the reinkers to watercolour and before I got the reinkers I used the spots stamped onto a plastic lid to pick up the colour with my aquapainter.
If you use backgrounds a lot or solid images a lot (and want to stamp them in colour) you might be better off with the larger pads.
IMHO...it depends on how serious of a stamper you are......do you stamp occassionally or regurlaly? For me, the spots just don't cut it.....too small. But I do alot of stamping and like the larger area of ink......
Yea, some others that DO NOT like the spots. IMO they are awful!!! I would say just get the colors you use in the regular sized stamp pad. For me that means reinkers of Moss, Amythest and Banana and lots of paper!!! But I am excited about the new colors. I love Melon Mambo and Razzelberry!!!

I disagree with this. I've had my spots since 2002, and they are all in great shape. I stamp a lot. So, I also disagree with those who mentioned implied serious stampers purchase the regular sized pads.
