What kind of cards do you give as gifts?
I have read that many of you give handmade cards (maybe in packs) as gifts for various occasions. What types of cards do you give? (birthday, thank you, blank, etc.) Are they all the same or is it a variety pack?
And how do you package them? Do you just tie them together with a ribbon or do you wrap them like a present?

I usually do a variety pack of sorts - the cards are usually all the same, but I'll do a few with a birthday sentiment, a few with thinking of you, a few thank yous, etc.
I put them in the clear card boxes from www.papertreyink.com and sometimes decorate a belly band around the box to give it an even more finished look.

I made sets of simple monogram cards to give as Christmas gifts this year. I used a strip of DP on the fronts and finished them with layered punches and an initial stamp. Each set was left blank inside and presented in a clear case with a band and initial which matched the cards.

i like to give a variety set (unless there is a reason/season/theme)
i like to package them in a brown lunch bag with a pretty ribbon so the focus is on the contents. (there are many ladies that have learned to recognize my packaging)

I just went back and re-read my question. If I had been reading it for the first time, I would probably have had the same smart-alecky answer as your daughter!:-P
I decorated a wooden box.
and included personallised set for my father or cards he could use to send my mother.
Valentine's Day
Mother's Day
Her Birthday
Anniversary
As well as a few "thinking of you" type cards, and "thank you" cards.
I made a lot of One Sheet Wonder (OSW) sets for Christmas gifts this year. I had high hopes of making some coordinating boxes or totes, but it never happened, so I just wrapped them in tissue and placed them in a simple gift bag.
My OSW's (when in a set of 10) had 1 sympathy, 1 Get well, and the rest as thank you, happy birthday, and thinking of you. The insides were blank. I generally stamp randomly on a neutral sheet inn 4 colors...then I make 2 cards in each of those colors and 2 in the neutral. (Sometimes I just did sets of 5 cards) I cut the stamped sheet according to a template I found on SCS. There are several. If you search the gallery for OSW you will be AMAZED at the sets displayed! That is what inspired me!
Here are links to some of my sets that I really had fun with...
I typically like to give sets of monogram cards or thank you cards (to some of my son's preschool teachers/staff). I've packaged them in different ways such as:
cloth bag monogrammed with their first initial (cards/envies tied together with ribbon inside)
decorated metal lunchbox
decorated wooden boxes
just tied together with ribbon
clear boxes with the cards facing outward so you can see them
It just depends on how much of a time crunch I'm in or what I feel like making that determines what type of packaging I use. : )

I find that OSW's are my absolute favorite cards to make!
Me too! I did the same thing you did for Christmas gifts this past year. My mother in law is always asking me for cards when she needs them so I put together some osw (one sheet wonder) cards for her. I put each card in a plastic bag and then put them all in a small tupperware container and I gave them to her for a Christmas gift. I can make 10 cards out of one 8 1/2" x 11" sheet of paper. Here are the cards I made for her:
What does one sheet wonder mean? How can you get 10 cards out of one 8.5x11" sheet of paper?? That seems impossible. That would put each folded card less than an inch for the front.

When I first heard this, it confused me too. The "One Sheet" is a piece of designer paper or one you stamp yourself...then you cut it into different pieces to attach to full sized cards. It means the overaall design theme comes from the one sheet.

One sheet wonder cards are cards that you create using a piece of card stock that you have stamped. Basicially you take a blank sheet of card stock and cover the entire sheet with various stamped images in colors of your choice. Then you can cut and use portions of that sheet of card stock to make your cards. I can usually get up to 10 cards out of one sheet of card stock. I hope I'm explaining this right.
Here is just one OSW template...the one I use (perhaps with a little variation). The gallery has several others, plus just looking at the pictures will give you ideas.

When I have given cards as gifts I have usally made the One sheet wonders. I stamp various sentiments that could be used for many different occasions, Happy Birthday, Thinking of You, etc. I also made a variety of Thank you cards with different stamp sets. If I have time I make a tote if not I wrap them in tissue paper and then put them in a gift bag.

Yeah....looks like we were posting at the same time I really like the template you posted. When I do my osw cards I just cut and go from there. I'll have to try using your template next time I make them. Thanks for sharing it with us
I usually wrap them in white tissue paper and tie a pretty bow around the pack. But when I'm really motivated I decorate a little tin and put them in that.
It seems like cards were a big gift this year for Christmas. I also gave sets of cards as gifts. I made them all different, for different occasions etc. I made the one sheet tote bags to put them in, with the recipients initial on the front. Everyone loved them.
Woo-hoo is right for the OSW template! I never knew one existed but now I have a challenge to myself to do this! Thanks to all of you wonderful and inspirational stampers.

I typically include thank yous, birthdays, baby, thinking of you, and occasionally a wedding card. Since I know I can't supply a person's card needs for EVERYTHING, I just try to make sure they have a handmade card to give when it's a 'special occasion.' I simply package them up with envelopes in a clear cello bag tied with a ribbon. I've spent hours making the cards and usually don't have time to make a container too. Because the cards are for a variety of purposes, and are made over several stamping sessions, they don't coordinate at all, but the colorfulness and variety is what I like about the sets.
I wanted to clear out some of my older cards to make room for new ones so I made packaged sets of 10 cards that had a mix of male and female cards. The packages were a mix of birthday, sympathy, get well, congrats, and generic. I gave a card set to each of female family members as a stocking stuffer. I wasn't sure if they would like them but the response was amazing. They were all gathered together to see who got what. I wrapped the sets in scrapbook paper that I was never going to use and tied it with pretty $1 ribbon from Mikes. They are already talking about hoping that I do it next Christmas.
I also make portfolios where I put in a set of matching note cards/evenlopes, I put in postage stamps in a tiny envelope. I let the receiver know that I would not be offened if they want to re-gift but they usually say no way, I keeping this!
I look at it as a win-win: They got a lovely gift they seem to like and I made more room to make and buy more.
I give quite a few monogrammed note card sets; they are simple to make. I will usually decorate the envelope to match or sometimes line the envelope with patterned paper if the cards themselves are super simple.
If giving a set of greeting cards, I usually give based on the person's age. My age group of friends has little kids and it seems there are babies being born weekly, lots of birthday parties...So I give lots of baby/little kid cards. On the other hand, my 90 year old aunt needs more sympathy, get well types.
I love to package all of the in Papertrey's clear card boxes. You can decorate them with belly bands, silk flowers...really anything!
