How do you plan on using your stamps...making cards? Scrapbooking? Both?? That can make a difference...
Mostly for making cards, but I'd also like to find a few good ones that I can make background paper for scrapbook pages I just am overwhelmed with all the wonderful stuff in the cataloge! My wish list is over 200 dollars, and thats w/out really delving into the cattie, lol!
French Script or Canvas
All the Best
Friend to Friend or Curvy Verses
Two sets out of the new catalog! I'd look for one that's fitting for boys/girls and probably a floral set.

I agree with Shapes & Shadows. I think the set is very versatile (just look through the gallery), for both cards and scrapbooks.
I think you definately need a generic background stamp; like linen, canvas, print pattern.
Then, you need to pick out a word set (like Sincere Salutations, or Words of Wisdom) - I would say words you can use on the front of a card, not something that goes inside. You can always hand- or computer-write the inside verses.
If you're going to limit yourself to just a few sets (to start, because you KNOW you're going to get addicted), then try to find sets that coordinate, that way you can use them together or separately.
What kind of stamps do you already have? It can help if you get images that can work with what you already have. It will also make a difference if you will be making lots of cards relating to children. Since I don't have any children, those types of stamps would not be as versatile to me, but they may be to you. As boring as they are, one stamp set with several different types of greetings is so useful to have (like Sincere Salutations, any of the Wonderful Words or either of the All Year Cheer). I always feel grumbly buying those, because they don't seem very exciting, but they always get used!

Spend some time in the gallery, find cards you love and order those sets! I have never liked shapes and shadows. No flames please! Get sets you love, not what others think you should like. Good luck.
I like All Natural alot. Sincere Salutations can be pretty versatile if you can cut the words into 2 (some you can and some you can't). Those are probably my faves.

That being said, I think these are pretty versatile:
*Linen or Canvas Background
*Itty Bitty Backgrounds- it looks boring, but it's a must!
*Simple Shapes- another boring looking set, but would be useful for backgrounds and shadow stamping
*Petal Prints or Heartfelt Thanks or Roses in Winter
*Lovely as a Tree
For cardmaking, what kind of cards will you be making the most and who will your recipients most likely be? Sympathy, Thinking of You, Birthday? Children, adults, or the elderly? Keep that in mind when picking out your sets. I make mostly sympathy and thinking of you cards, so I have a lot of floral sets. If you don't want to buy a set of sentiments, consider picking a floral set with a sentiment that you like, Heartfelt Thanks, for example. If you're not into florals and like more humorous stamps, you can't go wrong with the chickens in Best of Cluck! If you think you'll be making a lot of Christmas cards, you can get a Christmas set, or Lovely as a Tree is surprisingly versatile for Christmas, as well as Sympathy and Masculine cards.
Did you have any sets in mind already? We can help you decide if they're versatile.
Wonderful Words 1 or 2 (Looks great on cards or scrapbook pages)
Heartfelt Thanks (Great for adult cards)
Favorite Bear (Good for kids - boy or girl)
Simple Shapes (For backgrounds, shadowing, or masculine cards)
Sincere Salutations (Works on both the outside of a card as a focal point, or for the inside as a greeting)

Phrase Starters I & II---I know that one of those is no longer available, I just can't remember which one.....I have both.

1 background from Print Pattern, Floral or Canvas/Linen
I word set my preference would be Wonderful Words I or II
