Thanks guys for all of your great ideas. I asked my company's print room if there was any paper that was unwanted (other than recycled paper) and she gave me a whole roll of 24" wide plotter paper. It can't be used anymore becasue the inside cardboard is damaged and doesn't fit on the plotter. I think I will just rip off what I need on that paper and use both sides of it untill it can't be used any more.
I guess what I mean is what do you use under your crafts so stuff doesn't get on your table? I've been using butcher paper but I just feel so wasteful. What are some alternatives? I was thinking of using malamine (sp?) board but if ink gets on it, it tends to smear. I hope making sense as to my dilema. Any sugestions?
Our local newspaper sells the end rolls of blank newsprint. Each one has a huge amount of paper on it. I just roll it out and cut to size to cover work tables when my stamp group comes over or on top of my desk. Perfect for scribbling notes, coloring, gluing, etc. Quick and easy to remove and just toss when it's well used. And great for the grandkids! They only charge $2 for a roll and it lasts me for months.
I use many of the same things mentioned above, but I also use the large flat bags that you usually receive when you buy 12 x 12 paper. They have a large surface that I can test stamp on and I always seem to have quite a few of them!;)
I use the stampin up! grid paper! I just got it a few weeks ago and already can't believe I ever didn't have it! It's really big paper so you can set your card right on top and have lots of space to stamp off on the scratch paper. Comes in like 100 sheets too, it'll last awhile!
i have an 18x24 inch cutting mat, and i usually stick a sheet of 18x24 inch newsprint paper on it. why paper over it? because the mat itself is bright green and leaves green residue on everything that touches it. but, i have a cutting surface, and i have paper to stamp off on. i also usually have my 9inch square cutting mat to the side.

When I first started crafting (before I really got into SU) I bought packs of cheap DP at Michaels. When I was cleaning I reallized I would never use most of that. Now I use the 12x12 sheets for a workspace, then toss when they get too gummed up. Works for me!
Junk Mail. All those stupid letters asking me to sign up for a credit card or asking if I want to refinance my mortgage. I put those on my table and use them as a backdrop. Once they are used up, they go in the recycling.

My friend used to work in a urologist's office. The doctor decided he did not want to use examining table paper with advertising on it. So she brought home about 25 rolls of examining table paper with 'Cialis' printed all over it. She shared her paper with me. The first time anyone stamps at my house they are really taken aback by the protective paper on my table!
I recycle blueprints from my office. These are check sets and end up in the trash anyway, so I end up with 24x36 and 18x24 paper sizes to cover my work table, as well as the tables for my classes.
well a) I use a table that I don't care if it gets dirty... but b) I save cardboard from legal pads or whatever and work on them and a cutting pad - that is washable.
Good luck!
So, when it (what ever you use) just doesn't catch the mess & you find you have glue or tape residue on your table... I am clumsy like that... I use goo gone & it takes it away with no residue.

I now use the SU grid paper, but I used the newsprint you use for several years and sometimes I do miss it, lol! In true "green" fashion, lol, even that paper was recycled into my cardmaking. Don't be too quick to change your paper, and eventually you'll have interesting background paper to use in a collage! Not long ago I came across an old card I'd made with some, and (unlike some things from the past) I still liked how it looked.
I just grab one of those "nuisance" catalogues you're always getting in the mail. I open it to the 1st page, work on that one - when it gets messy, I just turn the page and use the next one until they're all gone. It's great when you're gluing!
I have a very nice Non Skid Mat that I got from IKEA it covers my work space and I use it all the time. For those cases when I am using my roller stamps or messy glue or something like that, I keep old sheets of paper (PP That i am not using, White CS that comes in albums, Cardboard backing from the PP pack, old printouts) that I have kept stocked for this purpose.
[QUOTE=jazzytobi;11613514]i use the Basic Grey Magnetic board as my base, then if i'm inking or using liquid glue (read: messy) i'll stick a piece of computer paper under my project.QUOTE]
What she said. This is exactly what I do except I substitute scratch paper (homeschoolers here) that I would recycle anyway for the computer paper. Good questions, thanks for asking - it's always good to hear how others do it and get new ideas! Gotta love this forum!
Isn't there some kind of cookie sheet that can be used for a protection type mat?? I thought I read some where that you can use a flat sheet of some sort that takes heat and does not stain. Glue, paint and gunk just wipes off. Does anyone know about this type of mat??
I use a black non-stick oven shelf liner. It's easy to clean and it's a nice large size. Double sitck taped the corners and it's ready whenever I get the time.
I've always used my Creative Memories Self healing cutting mat, but kept getting ink on it, so I put a piece of 12 x 12 cardboard on top of it. I've always kept the cardboard that comes in the decorative paper packs.
I didn't really know why I kept them, but now I'm glad I did. I guess I'm recycling too.

I have a big stack of paper from my Mom's office. They replaced their computer system and no longer needed the long reams of paper that had holes punched in the sides that could be torn off at perforations. Each piece of paper is rather large. You remember that stuff? Anyway, I've got enough to last a looooong time. They were just going to throw it out, and actually my Mom gave it to me for the kids to use for doodling and drawing!
I work on an old desk that I bought at a yard sale and refinished. I had glass cut to fit and it is awesome! Nothing sticks and it is a breeze to keep clean. I have an old mouse pad and some sheets of paper that I got from a printing shop years ago that I am still working my way through. This is the actual surface that I stamp on.
I would encourage all of you to keep a container on or nearby your stamping station to drop pieces of paper in to recycle. Even in my dinky community, there is a place to recycle paper.Once you get into the recycling habit, it is amazing how much you come up with. Give it a try - then you'll move on to other types of recycling, I hope! My demo was telling me that when she lived in Germany 25 years ago, when the citizens would shop for groceries, they would stand at the trash can by the door and peel of any excess packaging that they could because waste disposal was charged by the pound at their place of residence. WOW! Can you imagine the outcry in our trashy society!

I do the same thing Jutta! I got the idea from my upline. I just have the bottom of a baby wipes container that I leave on my table and fill it with paper scraps. When its full I have a bigger one in my room. Once a month or so I empty the big one into our curb recycling container. ITs amazing how much all those little scraps can add up!
As for desk covering- same as most SU grid paper or the desk calenders. Last year a drug company left a bunch at the hospital I frequent as a paramedic, and so I took one for my desk. Once it is GROSS , then I recycle it!

I use one of those large, desktop monthly calendars that you can get for a couple of bucks @ Office Depot. It's nice to practice stamp on...glue over, color on. B/C when it gets too messy or dirty...just rip off the paper and voila! fresh paper underneath. We also had bought a sheet of plastic liner that you would use in a shower wall? but, ended up not using it. So my boyfriend cut a 12" X 12" or roundabouts there and I use it for my distress inks for blending or distressing the sides of my CS. When I'm done, just spray some stamp cleaner or a little water on it and it comes right off. HTH!
I also use the desktop calendars. I love them because they cover such a large area. I'm also quite frugal (cheap, really!;) ), so I wait until mid-January to purchase them, tell a store manager that they'll be used for craft projects as a table cover, and ask what I can get them for. The last several I purchased only cost a quarter each.
I started out using the stubs of newsprint paper from the print company, until the printing company near me upgraded their equipment and then were able to use up the entire roll.
For a while I went with the old phone book concept just tearing off the page as it got dirty...then I discovered the SU grid paper. Love it!!! I use it to death....all kinds of "historical" stamping on both sides of mine and the reason I usually have to trash them is because they have ended up with adhesive all over them.
I have an antique library desk with a glass top. Living in a small town I went to the local newspaper printer and they have rolls of what is called roll ends that they give away free. I tape a large piece on the glass and it protects the glass as well as giving me plenty of space for stamping off as well as all the figuring out of measurements that I refer to.
i use the Basic Grey Magnetic board as my base, then if i'm inking or using liquid glue (read: messy) i'll stick a piece of computer paper under my project.. I know a lot of people use the SU! scrap paper pad, and i think i'm gonna try it just because it has the added bonus of a grid on it.. but ya.. mat and paper!
This is exactly what I do. I love my Basic Grey magnetic mat. I protect it with scrap paper (mostly computer paper). I fold the sheet in half so I have 4 sides to use up before I recycle it.

Several ideas:
1) I buy large tablet desk calenders (at the $1 store) and when they're sticky, dirty, or torn up just rip off, flip over and use, then throw away. The one I have now actually has lines across it, and I use those to "eyeball" things instead of measuring or to help keep my journaling in straight lines.
2) I keep a few catalogs or magazines nearby and can open a page, glue something on top of it, then turn the page. Toss when you've used all the pages.
3) My separate work table is covered w/glass which just cleans right off.
4) Keep printed pages from the computer and use those. I just keep an empty stationery box handy to keep those sheets in
I use a pad of white construction paper measuring 18x12 that I found in the school supply section (with a cutting mat below it) Then I can ripe off the top layer once it is messy. That way I can test my pencil/pen on it for a color check and then toss away as it gets messy.
I really lucked out at in March of this year! I was at the Dollar Tree and they were clearancing out the 2008 big desk sized calendars. I was able to get them 4 for $1- they each had 14 sheets per calendar and I use both sides before throwing it out.

I use the cutting board sheets (they look almost like stencil plastic sheets) that you can get in the kitchen supply section of Walmart. There are three sheets to a pack for less than $4. They are a good size and are washable/reusable too. One sheet is white, one is blue, and one is green and they are translucent.
I use something called a Messy Mat, as sold for use in schools. It's about 20x30 inches, clear plastic and everything will wash or scrub off it. It's big enough that I never needed to worry even when I used it on the dining table. A place mat would never be big enough for me!!

I use a clear plastic desk mat that I bought at IKEA for around $5. Its non slip so it stays in place and it cleans up fantastic. If I get some Stazon on it I just use my SO cleaner and its all clean again.

I usually stamp on my kitchen counter which is next to the recycle container, so routine stamping it is just the back side of something out of the recycles. When I am doing a lot of gluing I use the paper booklets that come in the mail, do a card on one side, flip it over use the other then turn to the next page and not have to worry about extra glue on anything important.
