Those look like they were hand embroidered using floss, filling the design area with either French knots or colonial knots.

Looks like needle punching.

This blog shows a similar technique, a pink poodle filled with French knots. Colonial knots would also work well.

Hi Everyone,
I am thrilled that you all are checking out my baby onesies!! I stamp the onesie and then I fill the design in with french knots. I know that seems tedious but it really isn't that bad! I love the look of the added dimension and the fact that I can change colors anytime I want. I am constantly trying new designs so please check my blog again for more posts.

How does the punch needle method not get snagged and come unraveled on the wrong side of the project (especially for something like a onesie)? What keeps the loops on the front from being snagged and pulled out?
