I agree - Lovely as a Tree was the first one that came to mind. Sketch It is a classic, too, IMO.
I tried to reply last night and my computer froze!
I LOVE Sketch It (my first set of stamps!) and it will always have a place in my stamp area. I got it for the sunflower/wreath image 'coz I love sunflowers but I really love it for the heart.
Other classic SU sets (imo) include:
Christmas Cardinal
Snowflakes
A Touch of Nature
Sincere Salutations
I also think all (or at least mostly all) of the background stamps are classic.
1) Roses in Winter
2) Lovely as a Tree
3) Snowflakes
4) Yuletide Montage
5) Linen
You just cannot go wrong with those sets, they always turn out nice. I think it's pretty funny that Lovely as a Tree turned up on almost everybody's list! I'm not surprised - there's just SO much you can do with that set! Current or retired, I'm not giving it up.
I agree that Heartfelt Thanks as a classic elegance to it. I just think I might sell it if it retired, which is why I didn't put it on my list.

Agreed. Would not give up Lovely as a Tree as Mr Heston put it "out of my cold dead hands"
My personal favs that immediately come to min & I could not part with:
Botanicals (the very 1st set I purchased)
Lovely As a Tree
Balmy Breezes
Terrific Tulips
Like It a Latte (just because it so fun)
Loads of Love (want more accessories)
Happy Winter
Holy Triptych
I have only been stamping with SU for about 2 years but, stamping longer with other stamp makers. My favorites are Lovely as a Tree, Wild About You, Pick a Petal, Loads of Love (I agree with SantaKitty....more accessories please) and Simply Said (one of the first sets I bought).
I have quite a few retired sets that someday I will part with...when I run into storage problems!!
My list is:
Close as a Memory (love the flowers)
Heartfelt Thanks
Watercolor Mini's
Simple Sketches
and a tie with Lovely as a Tree and Fantastic Foliage
I Love everyone else's cards with Roses in Winter but just cant' get my roses to turn out right. But I don't plan on parting with the set!
Fun thread
I don't have a classic list, but i think it's clear that Lovely As A Tree, is true classic. I love way too many to narrow it down.
The thread did get me to wonder what SU's best selling sets were/are. Although, I'm not sure if that info answers the top 5 classic list because, the sets change over time as well as the customers do. But I'd still like to know SU's top sellers.
Thanks for this ?, I'm enjoying reading every one's list. Not to mention maybe will we see some new uploads with some of these classics. I really enjoy seeing cards done with older sets. Maybe it because I keep ALL of my sets, they go back about 12 years.
Dina
I hope it does encourage stampers to use those wonderful sets that they spend a lot of money on and too soon go by the way side. I'm a hobby demo so I just can't part with my stamps as easily as those business demos do. Too often we are pushing all the new stuff, but I think you have to make your customers also feel like the purchases they have made in the past were good choices too.

Lovely As A Tree This is my go to set for a Man, Fall or Christmas.
Roses In Winter, all my word sets and all my backgroumd sets.
I keep all of the realistic animal sets, wolf, youkon, wildlife refuge, forest friends, Serengeti, etc. Other than that if I don't personally love it and will use it, Isell or give them away when they retire. I only have so much space for stamps. Unfortunatly, I have sold a couple of sets that I wished I hadn't later and had to resort to buing thrm on eBay.
I have a Happy Birthday Greeting stamp that I have had for YEARS... I think it was in the 1997 catalog. I LOVE LOVE LOVE it. Other stamps they will pry from my hands will be
I started buying SU! years ago and have only sold two sets! I have literally hundreds. Most I would never get rid of, but there are a few such as Stippled Celebrations that I'd like to find a new home for.
My top five would be:
Summer by the Sea
Natural Beauty
Longtime Friend
Feathered Hope
Coast to Coast
I also have a lot of florals that get plenty of use. I find that the more realistic images always have more staying power.

How can I possibly narrow it down to a mere FIVE SETS????
Absolutely can't-live-without list:
Loads of Love + Accessories
French Script
Pretty Peony
A Rose is a Rose
Garden Pleasures
Runner-up list:
Memory of the Heart
Knobbly Gnomes
Stardust
Blossoms Abound
In Full Bloom
Right At Home
Peace on Earth
Botanicals
Feathered Hope
Roosting
Time With You
Toile Blossoms
Print Pattern
Garden Snowmen
Flaky Friends
Okay, seriously, how on earth can I pick just 5???? Well, I'll give it a try, but my list of must haves is as long as the list of my inventory. I can't live without any of them, really... they all have a place in my heart and on my shelf! lol Well, here's my attempt at a list I would just ALWAYS have to have:
1. Lovely as a Tree
2. Heartfelt Thanks
3. Crab & Company
4. Roses in Winter
5. Wonderful Wings
