You can use Picasa...it is a free download and I use it for all my cards.
You can use the watermark feature when you edit you photos.
Sure hope that helps.
Do you have any photographic editing programs (I realise you don't have photoshop - neither do I!) - eg: Google Picasa or Gimp (both are free downloads from the web) or perhaps a Canon Scanner program? I have used all of these programs for adding text onto my image (much like a watermark). For an example of what it would look like using Picasa or my Canon Scanner program, please see this card here. I simply type in the text for each and every card before I upload it here to SCS or to my Blog.
I do use my (free) Gimp program for adding a proper watermark - is more complicated and took me a while to figure it out (read: hours!). Here is a sample of just adding a watermark. I guess it depends on what sort of look you want - and obviously, if you have any programs to do it. Gimp is a much more complicated program than Picasa.
After you do all of these steps several times it gets easier! It seems a bit overwhelming at first, but if you just follow her step by step instructions, you will get it!
In Picasa you can add text as a watermark, but you cannot layer images... if you have a transparent watermark file, you'll need a photo editing program that allows you to layer images. GIMP is a good recommendation.

I tried Vicky's site but all I get in the picture box is the dreaded red x. I tried in IE and also Mozilla. Any suggestions?

I see your problem. That's strange, as I had a look at that post before after Markie's Mom linked it in a thread, and I know I saw the pictures then. I certainly don't now. I'd say you should drop Vicki a line to say you (and others) are having a problem.
Here's a screenshot of the error message I get when I click on one of the blank picture boxes.
Another vote for Picasa here. There's an export feature that automatically will reduce your pics to the size needed to upload to SCS, and also automatically gives you the option to add a watermark. Using it is very easy and intuitive.
Good luck, no matter which option you choose!

In the past I have created a text box sort of thing in Powerpoint and put it on top of the picture and then you can select both and save them as a picture so you get the text on top of your photo. You can play around with it and adjust the transparency. If you are experienced with Powerpoint that is one way to do it.
While adding the watermark, there should be a box on the picture (where you typed your text). Put your cursor on the corner of that box and you can drag it and make it larger. You can also move the box and make your font lighter.
