I don't know if this belongs here but......has anyone used quotes in their cards that they have sold. I am looking at a certain market to sell cards in and would like to try and sell them through a retail outlet (not a big one just a small store, like a souvenier shop). The quotes would probably be on the inside of the card. I think that some such as proverbs could be used without permissions but others?????. I have searched on the internet and some sites say you must ask the author or publisher due to copyright infringement and some say that if you are doing it for a small market to go ahead. So I am perplexed???? Any thoughts??????
I have no legal background so I don't really have an answer for you but I have to say that your question gave me a chuckle . . . in a good way. If you get permission from the author of Proverbs, please let us know!

I would think if you gave credit as to where the quote came from (i.e Proverbs such and such, Mark Twain, etc) it would be OK. Even Stampin Up has verse stamps with the author's name.
I'm with the others. If I know who wrote a quote or verse, I always add it in smaller letters along w/the quote. And I only use ones from sites that say it's ok with them. I doubt anyone would ever check since you aren't mass marketing them .......but just to be on the safe side.
I was looking at some Bible verses the other day and the copyright depends on the version some are public domain but others do actually have a copyright on them.
This is my dilemma.....I want to make cards for horse people, being a horse owner myself I get tired when I want a sympathy card, thank you, etc and I can't find one. There are tons for cat/dog owners but none for horse owners (well there is one but it is not good). Also we have a consignment tack store in the area that I would like to try and put my cards in. I have found tons of horse quotes but am leary to use them as I don't know if they are public domain or not.
Is there an "author" associated with the quotes? If so, be sure to attach the name to it. I have to rubber stamps one that says The horse can transform the human spirit into wind... and the other The wind of heaven is that which blows between a horses' ears. Neither stamp is associated with an author and I have no idea as to where I bought them other than a stamp convention. You always put Author Unknown. I have seen verses and such like that. Hope this helps and good luck and lots of success.
