I don't think so Sarah. I have a SU shipment that is sitting at the UPS warehouse about 10 minutes from my house and it isn't scheduled to be delivered until Tuesday. Sure would be nice to have it for tomorrow.
Yes Smiley - the kids get the day off school. Unfortunately this is a hit/miss holiday. This is only the second year for this holiday - and it isn't mandatory. Luckily our employer has decided to give it to us off.
Family Day on Monday, Feb. 16, 2009
UPS will not be providing delivery or pickup service on Family Day in the provinces of Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Ontario
No, "Family Day" is only once per year, in February. It's only in certain provinces too. The school kids are off, and a lot of employers recognize it as a paid holiday, but some do not. I think it is nice that they have such a day devoted to families though.
Our UPS lady just came to pick up a package my husband was shipping - they're working here in Washington state! Doesn't seem right that they wouldn't be working in Canada.
"Family day" is just adorable. Is that what they call all bank holidays, or just this one? (Since I assume President's day isn't really big in Canada)
This holiday really is called Family Day. Please don't read this as rude.......Our holidays here aren't dependent on the holidays you have in the US.
Family Day is really new in SK. I believe this is the second year we've had it. The first one, I was on mat leave so I'm taking advantage of my long weekend off.
Happy Family Day from the US!!! I think it is a wonderful holiday!!!! What a great idea! Do most families do something special? For you gals who are celebrating it in Canada, what are you doing there?
I lived in Toronto for 2 years as a kid. I miss Swiss Chatlet!!!!

Alberta was the first Cdn province to create a Family Day holiday (it's always on the 3rd Monday in February). It started in 1990 so it has been almost 20 years since the first one! Our youngest was born just weeks before the first Family Day which is partly why I remember when it started. The provincial premier at the time came under lots of criticism as many employers figured another statutory holiday was an expense they didn't want to incur. Employees getting the holiday never seem to have minded... Unfortunately, since it's a Provincial statute and not a national one, federal gov't employees don't get the holiday. All kinds of politics involved with the reasoning on that....
Saskatchewan started 'celebrating' Family Day in 2007 and Ontario came on board in 2008. I believe Manitoba has a holiday today but I think it might be called Louis Riel Day.
So, yes, it's a bit hit and miss but even though it's still the middle of winter, I've always liked the fact that it provided another long weekend between New Year's Day and Easter. We've always kept it pretty low-key but usually plan some sort of family get-together.
We enjoyed a weekend with family all home to visit - our oldest (employed by the federal gov't) had to head home a day early though as she had to work today. :(

Can't help with Canada but US does. And for your info, if you have something going and needs to arrive on a Saturday go with FedX. UPS works Monday through Friday. FedX regular days are Tuesday through Saturday. So you get to ship without paying that extra TONS of money. FYI
