Have you noticed that owls are popping up everywhere in the stamping world? Recently, Cornish Heritage Farms came out with an awesome owl set and so did Gina K. Stampin' Up has one in the upcoming catalog, and I just saw some Amuse owl stamps on a blog! There's at least another one or two that I've seen recently.
What is it with the owls?? I tend to think a lot of these stamps are really cute, but why owls and why now? Who decided that owls should be the latest greatest thing in stamping? Is there also patterned paper with owls on it? I haven't seen any yet....
I'm an SU demo (but I just had to buy the CHF owl set!), but I thought I'd ask over here on the general side - what do y'all think about all the owls??

I've loved owls since before it was a trend. I didn't know it was a trend until I popped in here last week or something and saw an owl thread. I just think they're super cute.
What got me to owls were Sassafrass Lass's Olivia owls. Ahhhh....
Now I have Sassafrass Lass's owl paper too, ahhhh
Stamp companies usually work several months ahead if not more creating their images. Certain parts of the industry come out with things and then other parts follow. Just as an example, I tend to look at fabric trends and home decor trends. There are actually trend reports that you can purchase or just search up. Probably many other artists do too.
On the other hand, I have created a lot of different animal stamps and so has Melanie Muenchinger. Our animals tend to have a certain personality. When I heard that birds were an up and coming trend, I thought about which ones would be the most expressive. Owls tend to fit that role. So do chickens.
Other times, things just happen out of the blue.
Last year, I came out with my stamps that fit the Marvy punches and then Papertrey came out with theirs the following month. I know Nichole Heady didn't just quickly draw up hers, she had them planned for a long time, as did I.
We just both thought up a similar concept. Then, it really caught on and everyone was creating stamps that fit circle, oval and square punches. That's okay, though. Everyone has their own spin on things and every stamper has their own taste so there is plenty of business to go around.
There was a thread on here a few days ago regarding owl stamps and everyone had their favorites. I'm sure all the owls are selling well because they are all cute and fun. And really....hooooo doesn't like an owl?
(Sorry, I had to do it. LOL!)

Trends in papercrafts seem to have a tendency to follow fashion. I know when I was a kid my mom gave me a huge owl necklace that she had when it was an "in" fashion trend. I assume a '70's thing. I bought a hoodie a month or so ago with owls on it. ;)
Owls tend to fit in with the 60's and 70's style revival we are seeing in fashion, home decor, etc. So, it makes sense that it would migrate over.
60's and 70's style is currently popular among the tween-age crowd; the paper crafting industry, generally speaking, is rising to meet what appeals to that age group.
I remember collecting owl stuff as a teen (oh so Maaaaany years ago) I still love them and am happy to see them..I'd also love a realistic one (not only the cartoonish) and on the hawk..
I would love to see a soaring hawk, eagle, etc... and maybe some landscape background sets too..
SU Wildlife has a soaring eagle, and abird that could be a hawk in flight.
Gray Wolf Graphics has a Great Horned owl sitting on a branch, BIR 5022 @ 8.95 -size about 2.5 by 1.75 inches
DRS has a owl sitting on a branch, DRS 27H333 for $8.24 about 2 x 2.5 inches
There are others out there but I don't own them YET!!!

I've looked at lots of owl stamps and samples to try to give this trend a chance but all I can say is eww. They drop dead things while flying around here and make to much noise at 4 a.m. Eww.

I'm an 80s child and owls make me think of Tootsie Pops. Remember those commericals with the owl...how many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop?
Owls, skunks, squirrels, mice... I love all those woodland critters. Oh frogs and turtles too. They're just cute! They make me think of children's books and fairy tales. Maybe that's why they're popular.
Location: keeping my 7 yr old still, while I'm in stampin' bliss!

I remember my entire childhood/teen years, my mom collected owls. (think 70-80's). She had well over 500 of these buggers. I will completely avoid them b/c of this. I can't tell you how many "owls" I bought my mom as gifts during my lifetime. Thankfully, she sold them all when they moved about 10 years ago. I've seen enough owls for a lifetime.
But who knows, when the gallery opens up, I might change my mind!

Anyhoo- I think owls are adorable.
Do you remember School House Rock? my daughter will be in a production of it this summer! all things old...are new again
I am soooo glad to hear that someone else can't fit into their younger style's. I know this post has nothing to do with the owl's, but, I was laughing when I read "muffin top". I have really been in a funk lately because of the extra pounds I've put on. Ugh!!!! I am 51, and I know it's going to happen but, I hate it so bad. I can still fit into my size 10's but they are tight. Just 7 years ago when my son got married I was wearing a size 4. Now how the heck did this happen?

Your Mother and I were the epitome (where's spell checker when I need it!) of trendiness in the 70-80's!! I didn't come close to 500 (maybe 50!) but I'm crazy about the little owl stamps. So maybe stamp trends are a nostalgia thing...

Owls actually started to make an "real" appearance in fashion last year. I find that a lot of "trends" in NA are about a year behind those in Europe. I knew last year that owls would be a BIG hit this year--I watch trends carefully. I personally LOVE owls and can't help but adore stamps with those images.

Well as one of the biggest owl lovers around ... I say why not and keep em coming. Owls stamps have been very popular for the past 18mths and I love it .... I have stamped more owl cards in that time then I have in the almost 20 years of stamping.. yahhhhhhhhh!
But to go further than stamping ... when I look around here owls are big in fashion too for at least the past 12 to 18 months too ... so that could be one reason why owls have followed into stamping/scrapbooking.
I can't talk for the US market cause I live in Australia but down here I have been able to purchase owl pj's for the past 2 winters .... this year I know of at least 5 different PJ's that had owls on them ... I got two pairs .... my DD also saw an owl top .... her size so she didn't get for me ..... and as for jewellery they seem to be everywhere too. So I guess it is just a natural flow on.
