How crazy do you get when you find an AMAZING bargain? Okay, I personally can't wait to tell someone...and I had to share this with all of you.
If you have a Dollar General near they currently have their Christmas clearance. I found gift card tins just a little shallower than an Altoid tin, but about the same length and width. They do not have hinged lids, but they work perfectly for altering. I am going to fill mine with 12 altered dragon tears (those clear marbles with a flat side) with magnets on the back.
My goal is a dozen Valentines sets to send to the BX at the Air Force Base.
Have fun and happy after-the-holidays sale shopping!
I just dashed up to my Dollar General before they closed. They had a huge rack of these darling tins - only 30 cents each. So I got 15 for only $4.88. What a deal!
I got the ones that are red with white dots and say Happy Holidays in the middle. They will be perfect for Valentines Day, because the edges won't have to be covered. The red and white dots will work, and I only have to alter the top.
Thanks again.
And in case I was overly ambitious for Valentines, which I have been known to be....they will be great next Christmas!

Okay, now that I have all these wonderful tins - what can I put in them besides magnets? I made a bunch of magnets at Christmas time, and need something different for Valentines.

These sound CUTE! I don't know the size of them as we don't have a Dollar General but could you put 2 decorated York Peppermint Patties inside, could you make some little gift cards, red&white m&m's, or put punched hearts on top of Peanut Butter Cups and lay them inside, or could you fill it with "positive" thoughts or "fortunes" typed on the computer?
These sound so cute...I LOVE red and white polka dots

If they're gift card tins, then it's a safe bet they're a bit larger than a credit card -- usually half an inch or so extra to leave space for a finger notch to get the card out.

Okay, I measured them for you all. They are 4 1/4 by 2 3/4 by 1/2.
I love your ideas. I am going to make some of each.
I am also considering "love coupons" and accordian books.
I struck out three times today. I have never gotten a Target mailbox, so I tried two different Targets, to no avail. To appease myself, I decided to hit a Dollar General on my way home. I drove to it, and it was a Dollar Tree, not Dollar General. So, I struck out again. I don't even know where a Dollar General is in my area. Darn.

Oh I'm so sorry. I feel your pain. I can't tell you how many times I have read something on here that sounds so wonderful, dashed out to the car, got there, and nada.
The ones that get away always drive me crazy. But I've found lots of neat stuff from tips here, too.

Thank you for the empathy. I guess I should have added that it's not like my cupboard is bare. I probably have enough stuff to last me until I'm 80 years old. These things just sounded great. I'm glad that I'm not alone.

Okay, here's another opiton...WalMart has their clearance also and they also have Christmas gift card tins on clearance. They are 63 cents and about 4" square with rounded corners. Might be perfect for chipboard coasters that are altered.
