I have a tile coaster class tomorrow. I have always used felt pads from walmart for the bottom. I saw someone talking about using cork for theirs and I am looking into that. I went to Home Depot today and they said they don't sell it, try Staples next door. Well a roll at Staples was $14. Not sure if that was a ripoff or not. Also, what do you adhere it with? I was thinking spray adhesive....but that was another $12 there. Cork is jacking up my cost for these!
So, where do you get your cork and what's a decent price? Also, how do you stick it on?
Emily--I know you can get cork at hobby stores like Michael's and Hobby Lobby. I don't think it's as expensive as Staples price. Also, there is cork that comes in little circles with adhesive already on it and you can just put one circle in each corner. Good Luck
yes, I use cork. I buy it from Michaels with my 40% off because it is somewhere around $14. I adhere mine with either sticky strip or Alenes tacky glue. Glue works great, but we don't sell it. If I use sticky strip I usually do a 1/2-1" square for each corner (saves on cork and sticky strip).
If I remember right, Beate's gotten cork that's got adhesive all over it. . . and cuts that into squares for her tiles. I could be totally off, but that's what I remember from my asking her last time!
I gota roll at Walmart a couple years ago. Don't remember how much it was, but it was not that expensive. It was in the school supplies section. I also used Aleene's Tacky Glue. Works great, it is still holding the cork on 2 1/2 years later.

I get my cork at Ikea. You can get a set of 6 cork placemats for $6 CDN, and each placemat cuts into 12 cork coasters (4x4). I use a glue gun to glue mine on, and do it before the workshop.
You can also get a set of 12 cork coasters at Ikea for $2.99 CDN--it's cheaper to get the placemats and cut them up though!
I got a roll of the adhesive backed cork at Lowes a few weeks ago. It's in the section where they have the rolls of shelf liner/contact paper. I don't remember the size of the roll, but I do remember that I figured there was enough to cover the back of 60 4x4 tiles. I think the roll was around $9.95.

LOL! Thanks for the tip Jody! And Emily - I will totally go to Lowe's tomorrow! I am a big dork and thought I was at Lowe's (they are across the street from each other) and realized when I checked out that it was Home Depot....oops!
I got a roll of cork at Michaels in Canada..used my coupon, so reasonable price. I also recommend NOT using hot glue...I use a silicone glue...smells to high heaven, but it sure does stick...Rebecca

I bought a huge roll of cork at Hobby Lobby for $13.95. I found it cut best using my rotary cutter and mat (that I use for quilting). To hold it on I've been using Silicone II Household Glue available in the tool/paint dept. at Walmart for $3.95 a tube. It works great but it takes a while to set up so you have to be sure your tiles don't slide around on the cork until it dries or sets up.

If you have The Container Store, they also carry adhesive backed rolls of cork in their shelf lining area. It looks much better than cork I've glued on myself.

I got a roll of cork at Michael's (mine was only $3.00, but it also only covers 12 tiles) and I use contact cement, it works really well. (the kind you put it on each part, wait until dry, and then stick them together...permanent bond) just make sure you're in a well ventillated area, but it sounds like that cork at Lowe's is the best bet...I'm going to have to stop there, next time I'm up that way...
The increase in cost will make it worth it b/c you won't have to spend time glueing them on - or using the glue.
Emilysuesue - do you find that the adhesive sticks well and stays?
I usually buy mine at a local store. It's only $5 but it's hit or miss.
If I can't get it there I can get it at Michaels w/ a coupon.

I've always gotten cork circles, with adhesive already on them, at dollar stores. It's around where they keep the home decor items, for putting on the bottom of knicknacks. Much easier than cutting things from rolls and putting adhesive on them.

It works great! It is very sticky, cuts nicely, too. I laid mine out on a quilting type cutting board and used my long quilting ruler and rotary cutter to cut it in strips and then into squares.

One more thing, Emily -- spray adhesive will NOT stick! It's really only good for paper on paper, and even then can be iffy depending on the climate where you are. I'd recommend some kind of thick super glue.

I used cork for the bottoms of some polymer clay coasters I made. I got my roll at Ace Hardware for under $10--and still have tons of it left. Also, I'm not sure how it would work on tile, but I use Alene's tacky glue. Worked great.

The cork I got already has adhesive on the back, like contact paper. It is so nice and holds very well. (of course, you need to clean off the back of the tiles just like the front, to get rid of any dust on the surface before applying the cork)
Editing to add that I'm not sure WHICH Emily you were referring to!! Hope Emilymomto3boys finds the roll of stickyback cork at Lowes!

I get my rolls of cork from Lowe's in the "kitchen" section. I think I pay around $10 for about 2' x 6'.
I cut my squares with my CARL cutter. Then I adhere the cork with E6000 glue. It's the only glue I know of that can withstand the *sweating* of glasses in the midwest humidity. (FYI: Once my tiles are sealed, they don't absorb the sweat - it rolls right off, some of which goes onto the cork which *DOES* absorb it, so the adhesive has to have a cement-like bond.)

Emily, this is probably too late but just in case . . . I've gotten my cork roll at Hobby Lobby and Michael's (can't remember the pricing) but there was a LOT of it, I still have quite a bit left after doing at least 16 of them. Something I haven't seen anyone else mention is that I run it thru my Xyron to adhere to the back of the tile (something I think you already have?). But I would let your participants wait to do this themselves after they have finished their tiles because I like to test my colors on the back of the tile, then the cork covers it up when you're done!
I got precut cork to exactly fit the coasters at hobby lobby. I paid $2 for 6 cork coasters. They also had circle ones but the square 4 x 4 worked great. I used hot glue.
Thanks for all the help ladies! I ended up with the $9.95 roll from the contact paper section at Lowe's. It worked awesome. Self adhesive to boot! We did 48 tiles last night and there's plenty left. I think someone said it would cover 60 or so.
