Default Are there any SU colors that have never retired?

I was just using some Old Olive ribbon. I never, ever use O.O. So I am not sure why I have that ribbon.

Anyway, it got me thinking! Are there any colors that have been around since the beginning?

Also, what colors presently in the catalog do you predict will be around for a very long time (probably not forever), since as I look at the catty, so many are relatively new!
Well, besides the neutrals!

I am guessing

Real Red
Old Olive

..Mint Melody
..Mellow Moss
..Sage Shadow
..Bliss Blue

Fionna51...what colors do you predict will have staying power?

Thanks for that great list.

I have been stamping with SU about eight years...there are LOTS from that list I do not recognize.

Thanks for that complete list!

Honestly I don't miss any of those colors! I think SU has done a great job of keeping the colors updated. The only thing really missing is skin tones.

I would think real red will stick around since it works for Christmas and Valentines. Black, white and vanilla are probably safe. But then again they could always change just slightly and be re-named.

There are so many retired colors! Anyone have a list of just how many have retired over the years? I agree they need a fair skin tone again like the retired Blush Blossom-Blushing Bride is too pink for that.

None of their core colors are "safe" IMHO. But I do prefer many of the newer colors, they're brighter and clearer.

I miss YoYo Yellow, Brilliant Blue, and Not Quite Navy. Also either Brocade or Ballet Blue. Not sure which, I always got their names mixed up.

I would say Very Vanilla, Whispering White, and Basic Black are all safe bets....other than that, colors change to keep the color pallet fresh and on trend. I know I am glad some of those colors DID retire!!! I am not one for primary colors at all. (I know, I know...others like them!!!).
With that said, we just had a color revamp last year, so I don't think we will see any changes this year.

I like the primary colors for kid cards. A couple colors that I'm very surprised are still around are Rose Red and Perfect Plum. I never did care for those. Other than the few I already mentioned, I'm okay with the others being retired. (I confess, it did take me a while though.)

To be honest, I was shocked that Old Olive and Chocolate Chip didn't get the axe the last color change. I really like Chocolate Chip but it seems like Early Espresso has taken over for a dark brown. And personally I don't really think they need two. As far as O.O is concerned, I've never liked it very much, and I was really disappointed that they didn't dump it for Lucky Limeade.

I have a feeling when they do their next color revamp in a couple years, Tempting Turquoise and Rose Red will be gone. I like them both, but I like Raspberry Ripple much better than Rose Red, and I just don't see SU doing a whole lot to promote tempting turquoise anymore.

I think you're right, Julie. Seems weird to have Chocolate Chip and Early Espresso. You're also probably right about Tempting Turquoise and Rose Red going away. I will miss Tempting Turquoise, but we have several other colors I like just as well.

I agree -- tastes change, trends come and go, In Colors catch on and people want to keep some of those in the current stock. Any color could go in the next purge, IMO. And we will fuss about it and complain about missing a few old faves, but then we start to use the new colors and the old ones become a dim memory.

My picks for what gets the ax next time around:
*Chocolate Chip-making myself use it more, didn't realize it had been around so long
*Sahara Sand-I haven't seen much of it for several years from demos on youtube and I rarely use it myself.
*Tempting Turquise-it's nice but I like the newer similar colors
*Rose Red-one of the InColor pinks will kick that one to the curb
*One of the yellows just because- :???:

I was really surprised that Bravo Burgundy lasted so long, I used it once or twice from the variety pack several years ago.

I have barely touched my Chocolate Chip since Early Espresso came around. I was surprised to see Not Quite Navy go but have been using Midnight Muse and Island Indigo quite a bit. Same with Baja Breeze-I have switched to Soft Sky. Generally, there is an acceptable alternate available in the new colors, but it does get tiresome to endure the revamps. You'd think with the In Colors sticking around for two years and new colors coming out every year they could leave the standard colors alone a bit more and just keep up with the trends with the In Colors, but then sometimes it is hard to see those colors go too....I still miss Concord Crush!
Cherry Cobbler, Crumb Cake and Night of Navy seem like pretty solid candidates to stay around and Eggplant has been around for a long time, but I'm probably speaking more out of preference than knowledge.

Eggplant got an 'update' in 2005 - name change from Eggplant Envy to whatever it is now. (Yeah - I can't remember at the moment)

I believe that Real Red replaced Rocket Red.

From what SU! has said, I think their goal is to have at least one red, green, blue, yellow, orange, pink in each of the three coloured collections.

I haven't used Night of Navy much since we got the Midnight Muse In Color. I'm going to miss that one.

I still use Chocolate Chip - it's a softer brown than Espresso.
I'm still not convinced that Old Olive is a 'Bright', but things are better now that Rose Red isnt "Subtle".

I'm not using Soft Sky - I seem to grab Pool Party. Maybe somebody can explain where I should be using Soft Sky. (But then, I wasn't really a Baja girl either!)

Gail, I wasn't a "Baja" girl either - until just recently. Now of course, my supply is nearly gone and I can't get any more. But I like Soft Sky a lot, so that will probably replace Baja Breeze. I'm finding with these color changes that I get over them pretty easily. But then, I'm not a demo so I also buy from other companies, so I can usually find whatever I happen to need.

I'm thinking that the color categories...

No, wait. Let me back up...

If you take a basic color and add white to it, you get a tint . Most of the SU grouping of Subtles have white added, some more than others.

If you take a basic color and add black to it, you get a shade . Most, if not all, of the Regals have black added, to some degree.

If you take a basic color and add both black and white (aka gray) then you get what is known as a tone . SU does have some colors that are toned, in all three color groups.

As for the Brights, there seems to be a few that are pretty much clear colors, with little to no black or white added.

But...
Daffodil Delight is tinted.
Wisteria Wonder is toned.
Old Olive seems to be toned as well, as does Rose Red and Tangerine Tango.
Rich Razzleberry looks like it is shaded, but maybe it's toned too.

I've had to tell myself that Subtle doesn't equal pastel . And Bright doesn't equal color wheel pure color . And Regal doesn't equal rich darks .

Does that help?????

I am still a lover of Choc. Chip and have yet to jump on the Early Espresso wagon.

I will miss Real Red for Christmas and Valentine's Day if it ever retires. That would be a big stock up for me.

I agree that Rose Red & Perfect Plum may move on. I have never used them either and they have been around for awhile.

I'm going to scream if they bring out matching alcohol markers just as I've bought a ton of spectrums!

Are alcohol markers like copics? I have never gotten any copics.

Would they match SU colors? I have always been overwhelmed in trying to decide what color copics to invest in. If SU's version would make choosing easier, I would love it!

Yes copics and spectrums are alcohol markers. I couldn't afford copics so santa brought me lots of spectrums. If SU! Comes out with matching alcohol markers, I would have preferred them but I can't afford to start all over again!

I still miss Gable Green & Green Galore. I wanted Lucky Limeade to be a brighter green... more along the lines of these two. When I heard the name, I thought of Lime Crush and when it wasn't like that, I was disappointed. I grew to like it, though. In fact I would take it as a replacement for Old Olive, and not bother to stock up on OO... they are that close, to me. But we still have a need for a green that's bright.. not quite a neon green, but close.

I miss Handsome Hunter. I think there is a need for that kind of a green. It's very masculine. And it says Christmas to me just a bit more than Garden Green.

I thought I'd miss Taken With Teal, and I don't.That said, Bermuda Bay and Island Indigo are NOT the same. I've learned to love them just as much, but they aren't interchangeable to me the way Lucky Limeade/Old Olive and and Certainly Celery/Pear Pizazz are. With the latter two combos, I literally cannot tell the difference. I can absolutely tell you which cs is Teal, Indigo, Bermuda Bay.

Real Red isn't my favourite, but I would agree that you can't beat it for Christmas & Valentine's Day. As much as I love Cherry Cobbler - my favourite red ever - it's not a true red in the holiday sense.

While Soft Sky is a wonderful colour that has really grown on me, it is not Baja Breeze or Bashful Blue. I don't think you can just switch it in for one of those two if you're, say, matching ink & dsp.

I love Chocolate Chip just as much as Early Espresso. I like having both, because Espresso's darker.

I think switching out Rose Red for, say, Strawberry Slush or Raspberry Ripple (or Primrose Petals, though PP is lighter) would be fine. I'd miss Tempting Turquoise, though. It's such a wonderful colour. I hope it lasts forever. I do think getting rid of Night of Navy and swapping in Midnight Muse would be fine. As with Limeade vs Olive & Celery vs Pear, I can't tell the difference betwen these two AT ALL. I'm exaggerating... I mean, put two sheets of cs in front of me, one from NoN and one from MM and they look the same to me.

I'd love to lose Elegant Eggplant - I'd much prefer to have Concord Crush make a comeback. Heck, I'm a wee bit tired of Perfect Plum, too.

I love the idea of alcohol markers if the price point is decent. I've never invested in Copics or anything like that both because I wasn't sure what would go best with my SU stuff & because they are so expensive.

There will be a dozen alcohol markers in three shades each as well as a family of six skin-tones. This was announced at Leadership.

I am over the MOON excited about this!!! I have held off buying anything similar and I'm really glad now.

I have mixed feelings about what I'd like to see retire because some colors I never use the cardstock but I love the ink for blending and cardstock I use all the time but never the ink. I still miss some of the retired colors because they are clear colors. Some of the toned & tinted colors look dirty to me, especially spring colors. It would not hurt my feelings to see the following go away:
Perfect Plum replaced by a true clear purple or Concord Crush
Wisteria Wonder for a nice lavender
Chocolate Chip for Baked Brown Sugar
Blushing Bride for a pink with no orange
Daffodil for a clear yellow
Always Artichoke for Gumball Green
Night of Navy for Midnight Muse
Sahara Sand

I also would like to see a nice soft blue like Bliss Blue or Bashful Blue for coloring skies and I still miss Poppy Parade and Summer Sun

My color chart has most of the retired colors. I know it doesn't rocket red as I couldn't find color samples.

I am so EXCITED! This is just the best news! YAY! So, am I right...do you shade with just one marker? I know you can also shade with one copic, but then it seems like you still need lots of close tones to do the shading. Like I said, I don't have any copics.

I guess this is what would be hard about running a business like SU? I adore the muted/dusty tones like Blushing Bride and Daffodil Delight...but believe it or not I also like the one color everyone called YoYo Yuck, yep, I liked YoYo Yellow a lot!

I would be fine with Midnight Muse taking over NON too. I loved your chart! Thanks so much.

I so agree. I couldn't imagine what it takes to try to find a happy balance for such a wide variety of customers. I'm with you on liking YoYo Yuck. It makes a great blending color for sunsets; looks great with purple and lime green for Halloween. I used the last of my paper but I have 3 refills for my ink pad. :p

Same thing happened to me right before the big color revision. I finally broke down and bought the whole set of markers, and stocked up on all my ink pads, refills, paper, etc. I had saved all my Christmas money to spend during SAB. I know I spent over $400. I was so mad at SU I quit buying anything for a long time. I wouldn't even look at the new colors. I was determined to hate them. Yep, I had quite the temper tantrum. Lol

I no longer buy colors that are retiring and I don't stock up on any colors other than any I use a lot. I don't buy in colors except marker sets. Unless an in color is something I just love, I don't get the ink pads. The markers usually work for what I need.

Kathy, I didn't KNOW they were going to be retiring them before I spent the $400. I think I bought them in February and they retired them in June or July. Ugh!

I used to never buy the In-Colors, because they would only be around a year or two. Lately though some have been so pretty I can't resist. I did learn the trick about buying just the markers recently. (Yep, I'm a slow learner.)

What is shown in the picture is the 12 colors we'll be getting. They will come in a set of 3 markers (all for the same color), with a lighter, medium and darker marker of the same color. So they'll blend well. Not sure what the colors sets will be named, or if each marker will have it's own name. The set of 3 will be $11.95. There will only be 12 sets available for now, and the neutral set. The neutral skin tone set is maybe 6 markers for $22.95.

I understand. I was just saying what I do now because I didn't know they were retiring those ink pads I had bought. I buy just the markers too so I technically have all the colors I will need that way!

Oh, okay! So SU will take the guess work out of where to start, because Copics have so many colors I just got overwhelmed and never bought any because I didn't know what to buy first. And they will choose the shades. YAY...this really works for me. I am very excited about this.
