thank you cards... etiquettely speaking
my son's open house was saturday. we had a great turn out BTW.
and my scrapbook (first one mind you) was a real hit. every body was passing it around.
i am still working on making the thank yous (and i thought i was done when i got the announcements done... HALF DONE ding dong- still gotta make the thank yous)
and my reason for posting (did you think i would never 'get to the point'?)
according to etiquette... how long does he have to get them written and mailed?
Well, I think I remember it being a month or two when I got married. For an open house, I think a month would be the max. I think you get more slack for a wedding since people assume you will be out of town for the honeymoon, possibly moving in together etc.

that depends...
How strong is the rope and how much food will you carry to him to get him to write........LOLOLOLOLOL
No--seriously,,,,,,promptness is to be admired...with that said, we still haven't heard from 4 of the 6 grads we gifted this spring---and they were more than a month ago...the other two we had in days after the ceremony. If he is working, I would say a month would be understandable..... what is his next step??? College? Vocational? Military?

For graduation gifts I think a month is good. I don't expect a thank you note to be long.
I have heard some say that you have a year to write thank you notes for wedding presents. Sorry but I think that is way to long. While I dis-like writing thank you notes (just not much of letter writer myself), the sooner you get them done the sooner they are over with.
Okay, had to consult Emily Post on the wedding thank you notes. She states that the year rule is a common misbelief and 3 months is the max for weddings. Of course, you'll find different 'rules' everywhere.
She doesn't give a timeframe for other thank you notes - just ASAP. Better late than never.

I would hope that the cards would be done with in two weeks or less. Anything after that seems like an afterthought to me. And the whole 3 months to a year for wedding gifts is wrong. You can write cards out a lot sooner than that. Who waits a year? I had cards done right away because I wanted them out of my way.

Congrats on sons graduation! My son graduated on 6/10/08 and we took him off to college on 6/12! He is working on campus at Pensacola Christian College so he needed to be there to start on 6/16. Talk about no vacation..yikes...It was so hard to take him clear across the country and just leave him there....It is for the best and he is so excited!
Blessings.
Don't know about open house, but three months for a thanks for wedding gifts - shock. No way, that is way too long for good manners. Even if you're on honeymoon a month should cover it. Personally I think thank-yous should always be sent sooner rather than later. Less chance of forgetting, especially if there are a lot.
I ran out of time to make thank you notes so I bought my son a package of graduation thank you notes from Target and I have been making him fill them out on Sunday's for everything he received that week. It took a bit of nagging the first week, but then I think he figured out it was easier to just get them done. :-)
I was worried that we'd never get them done if he had to wait for me to make the cards.
