Hi Ladies,
I just got back from Target (Dollar Spot) and found these adorable little oval metal containers with a wooden handle on each end. They were so cute, I just HAD to buy the 12 they had.....now what am I going to do with them?
I tried searching in the gallery but can't find anything that looks like them. Anyone else seen them or have an idea for me? They are about 5 inches long and oval....really cute. I was thinking about putting little plants in some of them for Teacher Appreciation next week, but I don't really know how I'd alter them since they are that silvery metal.
Thanks in advance!
Tami

there was only one left at ours and it was missing one of the handles, so I grabbed a pail and a watering can. The pail is for a Bday pressie and I just liked the watering can. Might do a cutesy gift pack with like seeds and stuff.
Use some floral foam in bottom, moss, and small dried eculyptus, berries, cinnamon sticks, fake birds, butterfiles or paper punched butterflies, birds, etc. Add cinnamon oil to the sticks and they will smell for several months. Also you could put flower soft on stems and make a flower arrangement.
If you want to make them different colors, you can use alcohol inks to "paint" them. Here's a link to a tutorial in the resources section.
It's basically the polished stone technique. When I do this technique, I only 2 alcohol inks and 1 mixative (I prefer silver, especially if the container you're using is silver to begin with). It starts to look too crazy or muddy if you use more than 3 colors total. Or maybe that's just me.
Cute! I see dried loafa log, bath salts, lotion, etc wrapped with shimmery tulle from the fabric store and tied at the top.
Nice gift for a teacher, high school grad headed to college or anyone for that matter.

Oh, that is so cute!!! I wonder if our Target has any of those. I would have bought them too, and figured out later what to do with them. If you do something put them in the gallery so we can see what you came up with.

Just checked out the tutorial.....that's really cool.....but how much would it cost me to buy all the inks and stuff to make it work?
Thanks for the info.

Tee Hee! That's totally what happened! I saw them and bought them all; knew I'd figure out what to do with them somehow!;)

Wouldn't they look cute with those wax soda bottles? Can't remember the name of them but they have sugary sweet liquid in wax bottles. Nikl -nips or something like that.

If you have a crop-a-dile it will totally punch through that metal for a ribbon to go through or to set some large grommets or brads!!! You could then add a few rub ons which would look awesome! Dont' forget that your stazon will work on metal too!
These are similar to the ones they had last spring and they looked great "tricked out"! I hope my Tar-jze' has them too!

I know they will be really cute once I figure out what to do with them. Do you have any idea where I could find photos of what people did with the ones from last Spring? I couldn't find any in the gallery.

Well...that depends. Since the container is already silver, you could probably get by with just 2-3 colors of alcohol inks (that is, don't buy the silver mixative). Where I live, a set of 3 inks (by Ranger) retails for about $10. Then you also need the alcohol blending solution; I don't know how much that costs. It comes in a 2 oz bottle. Maybe $5 or so? (I've also heard of people using regular household rubbing alcohol, but I've never tried that so I can't attest to how it works.)
And then you need some small squares of felt. You can buy a piece of white felt at Michaels for about a quarter I think, and cut it up into squares. You don't need the blending tool to attach the felt to, unless you have a strong aversion to inky fingers. :p
So, let's estimate that it would cost $15-20 for the initial investment. But then you would have the inks and blending solution for other projects (they work on any non-porous surface like metal tins, acrylic, ceramic or glass items) or the polished stone technique or shaving cream technique which both make awesome backgrounds for cards! The inks last a long time because you only need a couple of drops of each color of ink for most projects.
Here's a sample of a card made with the polished stone technique.

I'm not trying to enable you. I'm just a big fan of the alcohol inks and find a lot of people unfamiliar with ways to use them.

Well, now you've gone and done it! THANKS:rolleyes: MissIowa!;)
Your cards are beautiful and they really make me want to play with some alcohol inks....maybe I'll tell the kids that I want alcohol inks for Mother's Day?!
Thanks for enabling.....even though you weren't really trying to!

How big are they? I can not tell from the picture.

You're welcome. ;)
That sounds like an awesome plan to me! And since Mother's Day is just 7 days away, you won't have to wait long to get them. :p
P.S. If the kids are buying them, be sure to ask for a mixative, too. LOL! The gold and silver come together in a package. Better yet, have them get you a gift certificate to a store that carries these products (I know for sure that Michaels does; can't speak for others like AC Moore since we don't have them in my town. I think Hobby Lobby does though). That way you can pick out your own colors. There are so many colors now that it may be hard to choose.
Here's a sheet I made for my local stamping and scrapping store where I teach, showing just a few color combinations. I was able to use inks that I owned plus ones that we already had opened at the store for classes, so I came up with combinations that aren't necessarily sold together in the sets of 3. (Does that make sense?) And I do know that some online places or maybe a local store will sell them as individual bottles.

Thank you so much! That really explains a lot since I'm totally new to alcohol inks. Your color combos are really lovely! Now I'm going to want too many different colors! I guess I'd better pick a few to start with, but I'll definitely get the silver/gold package of mixative as well.
Thanks again!

Those are very cute containers. I saw them but passed. I have so many little $1 metal containers that I had to have but never did anything with. THe idea was good at the time it just never evolved. Maybe I'll get some ideas from this thread to use with my other metal containers.

I love spending as much time as possible in my Color Studio
Those are so cute! (Plus I love what you have in the background of the pic!!)
There are lots of good ideas, another would be to decoupage pictures - one of my friends did that for her dad's Christmas present on a metal tin/pail of some sort - she used pics of the logos of all of his favorite sports teams.
Good luck with whatever you decide to do with them!

Being only 5" long, I think the idea of decorating them with ribbons and a tag and filling them with chocolates would be cute. After the chocolate is gone, the teacher can put it on her desk filled with paperclips, binder clips, etc.
Hmmm ... I may have to make a trip to my local Target! ;)

BTW, You can get the same effect without alcohol inks. Use a cotton ball or piece of felt and put a few drops of alcohol on it. Then drop several drops of re-inkers onto the same cotton ball. Smoosh your metalic ink pad onto your paper and make random marks. Then dab the alcohol/ink filled cotton ball down and you'll get the same effect. The alcohol breaks down the metalic ink and makes a "marble" effect. Here is the tutoral: Polished Stone™ Tutorials at Splitcoaststampers
Waaaay cool.
I'm not sure how this would work on your little buckets though:confused:?!?!?
Thanks for all the great ideas! I just measured the tins and they are about 6.5 inches wide and 5 inches from front to back. They are about 3 inches deep. I think I'll try the alcohol inks on a couple of them this weekend, but before that, I'll just use some ribbon and cuties on a few of them and fill them with chocolates for DD's favorite teachers for this week's Teacher Appreciation Week. I DO have a crop-a-dile that I've never even taken out of the package, so I might try to add some bling to them with some jeweled brads!
Thanks again for all of your great suggestions!
I'm off to work, but I'd rather stay home and play.:(

I bought a couple at our Target store too. I put rub ons on the one I gave as a gift. It was my niece's birthday and she wanted suckers (she is 13) so I kind of made a basket of sucker flowers (but I didn't decorate the suckers like flowers cause I'm lazy!!). But I did fill it with M and M's to keep the suckers up!
the rub on didn't show very well though, so next time I'm going to paint a stripe or something around the tin so they show up better. I used the black, maybe the white would have shown up more.
But I was just looking for a cool way to give her suckers (along with her other gifts of course!).
Why did I look at this thread???? Now I have to go check out my Target before my boys get home. Those are too cute.
I know I'm just thinking why did I look!!!! but luckily the nearest Target is over 20 miles away so its a planned trip not just a drop by and see.
Mmmm...today I see a dish towel on the bottom and hanging over the edges with a stack of homemade blueberry muffins.......What teacher wouldn't like hot blueberry muffins in the morning. Mmmmmm I can smell them too!
Sheree
That is so cute!
Those tins are still at my Target, but they are quite a bit bigger than the ones I got with the little wooden handles. I may have to run back out to Target in the morning and pick up a stack of those rectangular ones just so I can do something like the ones in your post. The ones I saw at my Target had a design kind of hammered into them; I can't tell if the one here has it or not since it's covered with the DP and ribbon.
Thanks for sharing!

Sounds good, but with these little tins, they'd have to be the tiny mini muffins! But it's a possibility.....
