People who have to put the entire post from someone else in the beginning of their post. Can't they just make a reference to it by name of the person or a few words of the post they are referring to? It just makes so much to scroll through to get to what the person actually wants to say.

Hi. completely get what you're saying but I think there are some reasons for doing this...
I just recently figured out that I can delete some of a quote. Yeah for me! But I have found that sometimes when editing a quote, it can change the op point or change the context. If that makes sense?!! And I tend to Quote someone just so it is obvious that I'm responding to that person's comments, since each thread then has many feed off conversations. I never want to step on any ones toes- so to speak!
I'm guilty of having done the "subscribing" reply myself in the past - and only recently learned that there's a better way to do it. I, too, get email notifications and it's a little annoying to get "subscribing" messages. I'll use the thread tools from now on.
I don't mind the "quote" reply though and use it myself - often to highlight a specific phrase or thought. But if it's long, I think it's thoughtful to delete whatever is extraneous to your reply. I'd rather scroll through the quote than have no idea what someone is talking about though.

There were lots of things I didn't know when I joined - it takes a while to get used to everything here. I also think there might be some sort of default setting (which seems to be different for everyone) because although my settings automatically subscribe to any thread I comment on, I've never had e-mail notifications. Now I know enough to be able to change anything I want to, but I'm guessing for some people, it's enough just to be able to be here
All that said, the whole "subscribing" thing really bugs me too. I've often wanted to PM the poster to let them know there's an easier way but can't think of a way of doing that which doesn't sound snarky. Hopefully, lots of people will read this thread and become enlightened!
I've thought of PMing people about that too, but I figured it really wasn't worth the time. I didn't want to sound snobby about it. I just thought they might like the info. I can't say that it really bothers me, but I can understand why you would feel that way.
It absolutely never occurred (did I spell that right?) to me that people were trying to up their posts by doing it. I just figured they wanted to subscribe, and didn't know how. Hmmmm. I guess it could also be a way to bump something up to the top, but you say "subscribing" instead of "bump".
I also agree about the "subscribing" word. If you're going to take the effort to type that word, at least state why you are subscribing.
I'll add another pet peeve......People who have to put the entire post from someone else in the beginning of their post. Can't they just make a reference to it by name of the person or a few words of the post they are referring to? It just makes so much to scroll through to get to what the person actually wants to say.

Honestly, if they are replying to someone who posted more than one or two messages previously, it is a pain in the neck to go back and find what that person said. I really like the quote button. For instance, now people know what I am referring to, as I reply to your comment.
i would have to agree that the quote button is helpful, but i don't know if many people know you can take words from inside the quote OUT.. that's maybe another thing people will pick up as time goes by.. there are so many people on SCS that are lucky if they get signed in and a picture uploaded! :P

Some people honestly don't know how to subscribe, others are doing it to up their post count. That is my pet peeve. It really bugs me that people are so concerned with their post count that they will post when they don't have anything useful to say. Doesn't happen here so much as elsewhere.
There we go! I wondered if I'd be the first to say it (although I doubted that I would be!) I've been on boards where ppl will post a reply on ANYTHING to up their own post count.
ok...my pet peeve...when describing a card or technique...
I used my stazon on pad
I used my heat gun
I used my scissors
I used my humpty dumpty stamp (pulled a stamp out of the air...not something I saw/read anywhere)
I used my blah blah blah
Can I assume it's yours, unless you borrowed it.
I had a friend who always used "my"...this was a real request one night to her DH..."can you open my can of corn with my can opener"? She was very well educated, prim and proper too...so I don't know where she picked up that nasty habit.

I could be wrong, but it seems like when I first got on SCS, the only way to subscribe to a thread was to actually post something to the thread. I didn't think that it was until the last few years where you could click on subscribe under the thread tools. Seems like before, the only thing there was a button to unsubscribe. So, I tend to overlook the "subscribe" posts.
A lot of people are trying desparately to up their post count because once you reach a certain level, you get to choose your own "title". Some of us aren't even aware half the time when our title has changed.
it's not about getting to the next title (which i too don't even look at) it the big 20,000 mark where you can make your own title... like, big whoop eh?

Can I just say that since participating in this thread, I now have the almost overwhelming urge to type "subscribing" in other places? Not that anyone would get the joke (which is why I am stopping myself, but it's hard... )
i don't select the email option either except for ONE thread (the sketch challenge thread, and even after Roxy typed these "subscribing" instructions i'll still get emails saying "subscribing" ...)
anyway... to turn OFF email notifications, go to your settings page (click on your name "welcome jazzytobi" on the top right of the page) and go to EDIT OPTIONS, then go to MESSAGING AND NOTIFICATION, and there's an option to turn off email reminders, daily reminders FROM POSTS YOU'VE SUBSCRIBED TO...
p.s. i'm a teacher, in case you hadn't noticed... i get annoyed then want to lecture. haha
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I have been looking for this feature since the week after I joined and kept thinking I WILL find it !
Well ladies, I'm embarrassed to admit that I've been a member more than 3 years now and I just figured out how to add a photo under my name TODAY!
There was always an *error message* saying my upload photo was too big.
I've enjoyed all the talent on this site and have learned many new things....
but..... was too embarrassed to ask *dumb* questions.
One of my pet peeves is that there are a lot of abbreviations used in the posts. I'm still trying to figure out a lot of them to this day! I know there is a thread somewhere explaining the meanings... but why not make it easier on us *newbies* and spell out the words? Us *newbies* feel left out.
That's my 2 cents. Thanks for listening. ha!
when I started on here, I printed out a list of the common abbreviations, but I have to say I use them now, because it's just quicker, KWIM (know what I mean)?
I had no idea that you could subscribe to a thread by posting to it. I must have inadvertently turned that feature off immediatley. I thought when people posted "subscribing" it was some sort of etiquette thing or what the "cool" people did. LOL!! I was actually wondering if it was a major faux-pas to subscribe to a thread and not post that you were doing so. ha ha ha! I have actually posted that I was subscribing to a thread (but I also added comments too- I could never bring myself to type one word) because I was afraid of offending someone!
Phew! I am glad to know that no posse is coming after me now! LOL!!!

be glad she's leaving info instead of go to MY blog
I will be reading an informative thread and there will be a multitude of posts that simply say "subscribing.." well that, my dear friends, is a HUGE pet peeve of mine, i DON'T KNOW WHY!!
all you have to do to subscribe to a thread is go to the THREAD TOOLS tab at the top of the thread, and click SUBSCRIBE TO THIS THREAD... done.
Well, I do that because I didn't know there was another way. I guess I'm just not as forum savvy as others, and I suppose I'm not the only one.
Thank you for sharing that there is a less annoying way to subscribe to a thread. I will do this in the future.
Weeeell, OK. I went to the thread tools and I must be the only one on the planet that does NOT have the option of clicking on "subscribing to this thread". There are only two options and subbing is NOT one of them, at least on this computer, so what's a girl to do?

Don't you get the same results when someone types "bump" to keep the posting moving for more response? Then you also get postings that continually say-bump, bump, bump; especially on a selling thread.
How would you work around that. Is there another way to keep a thread going for more ideas?

AND... the point of this thread was to tell people about that feature, not to complain about people who don't use it.

Try what is suggested in this reply here in the red - it took me a while too and I like to consider myself slightly computer savvy:rolleyes:

Thanks for the info! I NEVER was subscribed to threads when I posted. Now I am! Just checking it out and making sure it works!:p

I TOTALLY agree with you.....they could also just post a quick blurb (something informative or useful!) which will automatically do the same thing that typing "subscribing" in the post will do.
Nothing at all wrong with quoting. I think the problem being pointed out was when a post is five huge paragraphs long, and then the four different people responding to that post quote the ENTIRE thing, taking up the ENTIRE screen and you have to keep scrolling down to find what they're actually trying to say.
