A friend of mine ordered a personalized stamp from SU. She's not very happy with how it stamps...it doesn't seem to be etched very deeply and she ends up with either a light image or a lot of ink around the edges of the rubber. Is this a known problem? Are there any tips to getting a better image, and if not can you return it? Thanks in advance for your help!

Yes, this is a known problem:( SU doesn't make these so they are not the usual quality of SU stamps and is the reason I have not gotten one. I don't know of any tips but maybe someone else will. And because it's custom I don't think you can return it...:-/
I've had problems with mine from Day 1 ... I unmounted it and trimmed it closer, but the "o" in my name doesn't stamp properly. I've basicially just written it off and will not order another from them. I did get a personalized one from CTMH and LOVE it!
I have had this problem as well. Unfortunately, I do not believe you can return them since they are personalized - at least I believe that was the case when I purchased mine. You might want to check to make sure they haven't changed that. I umnounted mine and took it down to just plain rubber and stick it to an acrylic block with double sided tape. That seemed to help some, but still not great.
These are actually made one at a time at the Riverton distribution center (not the Kanab plant) using special laser etching machines. I saw them a few years ago during a convention tour. I have had no trouble with mine as long as I select bolder fonts and trim very closely without undercutting the foam mount. I started trimming them for my customers and have had no more complaints since then.

Interesting! I had always heard they weren't made by SU! I guess maybe weren't made by and made a different way got confused????
I wish I had known this before my friend ordered. I feel really bad, she relies on me to be "in the know" and somehow this quality issue escaped me. Hopefully our demo can be of some help. It's a shame that SU is putting out a product that isn't up to their normal great quality. Their stuff isn't cheap....what a waste!

I don't know why you feel bad. You're not a demo, you had no way of knowing and most demos probably aren't aware of the quality issue either unless they have one or have read the threads here...the threads here are the only reason I knew about it.
Is anyone telling the "powers that be" in Stampin Up about all the complaints on the personalized stamps? I can't believe they wouldn't want to address this issue?
You can return it. If the demonstrator does not have luck, call Stampin' Up! yourself. I am sure they will exchange it for another item for customer satisfaction. They are a great company that stands behind their products which is why I love them!
That said, I, too, find the personalized stamps lacking. I bought a couple and returned one. I did keep my angel policy one, but use it only with markers instead of ink pads. It's a pain, but works. Luckily, it is a very rare Stampin' Up! product that disappoints me.
Full disclosure: I'm a SU! demo.
I have a couple of the personalized stamps, and use them a lot!
Once I trimmed them (as Kim said - very carefully, very closely, without undercutting), I haven't had trouble with them.
They are cut less deeply. So, I've learned to have a lighter touch.
The other thing I've found ... multiple lines work better than single line stamps. (I have both)
I was a demo for 4 years, and never bought one because of all the negative feedback I saw from those who had them. In my previous life, I worked in a government Office of Consumer Affairs. That experience taught me that you have every right to have a product that is fit for the purpose for which it was intended. It's called the Implied Warranty of Merchantabillity. She should call SU and tell them she isn't satisfied with the quality of this product. Ideally, SU should pay to have it returned to them (they can send her a postage paid address label), or they can tell her to chuck it, and then can offer her the same value in other SU products (or a refund, which they don't do).
I read all of the posts above, and the one thing that strikes me is all the people who bought them, were dissatisfied, and just threw it away or don't use it--BUT didn't let SU know of their dissatisfaction. You can't expect a company to improve their product (or discontinue it if they can't improve it) if they don't know that customers are unhappy.
So call them and complain! ;-)
