Default SU "Close Enough" Colors

I've been a Stampin' Up user since 2003. At that point, there were 48 basic colors. It was before a big color upgrade that came a couple years later, and then the new "In Color" system started. As I look at what I've collected through the years, I find that while many of my older inks or papers are not, by name, the exact color, many are what I would deem to be "close enough." I started my stamping hobby with SU, and matching colors are VERY important to me! But really - as I stamp with Certainly Celery ink next to Pear Pizzazz paper - without seeing the labels, I would never know those are not THE SAME. I remember with the first "new colors" that came around in the first big "retire some old and bring in some new" after I joined, there was a big discussion in this forum about Regal Rose and Rose Romance, I believe? Most people agreed that they weren't different enough to warrant going out and buying a new pad immediately, or stocking up on retiring cardstock for your ink supply. My question is this: HAS ANYONE EVER MADE AN INDEX OF "CLOSE ENOUGH" COLORS?

I have not made an index but as my retired reinker colors have been used up, I buy a reinker in a current color that is very close and reink the same ink pad. For example, my Close To Cocoa pad is now Soft Suede and Bravo Burgundy is now Merry Merlot. I also store retired card stock with its very similar cousins in order that I use it up.

I would love to see a "Close Enough" index! Especially since sometimes I can't distinguish between colors very well so I never know if it's my crappy eyesight or if they really are "close enough".

"Close enough" is definitely a good term. I store my cardstock in "rainbow" order and that helps me find the color I need even though it may not be an exact match. Here's one chart of current colors in rainbow order; you can tuck your retired colors in between to keep using them as they work. https://www.pattystamps.com/2020/05/...bow-order.html

Thanks for this reminder on how to use old+new colors. I loaded up on Crushed Curry cs because I need it for two big scrapbooks (college color). However, I am now on my 3rd ink pad and it is not good, crusty and gross. Luckily, BumbleBee is close enough to use that ink pad with curry cs.

I don’t know if fionna51 will see this thread, so you might consider posting your thanks on the thread with all her lists.

That is very helpful! Thanks! I'd still love to see a "close enough" list, but with those being arranged in groups by hue, that gives me a place to start!

This is a good tip to use our old ink pads. I was going to get rid of them, but now will see how I can repurpose them. Thanks!

I do my own version of "close enough" but for me I always think "too close" when SU offers new colors. This chart probably isn't any help but I though I'd share. It's every color of cardstock SU ever made.

CNSteele, have you come up with a way to colour label the old ink pad with the new ink colour?

thanks!

I went the simple route - wrote on a piece of masking tape the name of the color with which I'm currently re-inking the pad and stuck it to the end of the pad that faces out in my ink pad holder (so that I could read it). Since I know it's pretty close to the color shown on the pad, that's enough for me. However, you could stamp a solid image on an Avery label and attach that to the ink pad if you prefer an accurate visual.

On a similar but different topic, does anyone know an ink (by any mfg) that is close to Tip Top Taupe? I can't find a refill for it anywhere, now that it's been retired. Thanks.

What would you charge to make this exact chart for me and ship it to San Diego???

I know someone who found a TiP Top Taupe refill on ebay recently. Likely the best place to check or on a FB page for Retired SU products.

Yes, I check EBAY and the forum every so often. This just doesn't seem to be one of those colors that show up often though.

I quit buying their InColors paper and markers 3 years ago. I've done fine with close enough colors. Actually, after over 12 years I'm off card making. Now I just do Christmas, the occasional birthday or sympathy cards. I did recently replace some old Stickles, but am still using mostly retired inks and have yet to buy one of their newest style ink pads. Glad I never got sucked into the demo world! I still have their Big Shot, why would I need another machine?

That chart is wonderful. I did not know there was a luscious lime at one time. Now, lol, I want it!

I am just seeing your post from over a year ago but I very much agree with you!! Close enough works for me! I don't want to fall into the trap of "needing" the latest products and colors. When I see the "new" colors, I automatically think of what former color is "close enough." I have an old fashion way of "cataloging" other than my Google Sheets accounting of all my color collection. I folded a sheet of white construction paper into squares/grids and rubbed each color I have onto a separate square. I compare items against this grid to determine what I have or match up unlabeled cardstock, pieces, etc. that I acquire with what is the correct color.

You could scan this and make this available on any online platform for sale (you might as well charge!). Etsy and others (maybe this site, too) allow a buyer to upload digital content. Great idea. I have a much less professional system but it is actually quite similar.

I started my colors in the late 90s and early 2000's. I couldn't make your picture big enough to see. Would you be willing to email it to me?
