Classic SU Ink Pads are waterbased, which means they react with water. You would need to use something waterproof. Most ink pads will say on the label what mediums that they work best on, if that helps. Staz-On works, and the new Memento Luxe Inks are also suitable for fabric if they are heat set first.
Rather than stamping directly onto fabric I use embossing powder. First stamp onto paper with versamark, sprinkle with embossing powder then heat emboss it. Cut out your stamped image, turn it upside down onto your fabric then iron it. It's washable. Here's a onsie I made using this method and SU's Gorgeous Grunge stamp set and colored embossing powders.
Note: letters would be backwards so I used die cuts.
