You really might need both
They are very different. But, if I could only choose one it would have been Linen.

You know, I was doing the same thing and then just decided that for me they were close enough to be interchangeable, so i went with Canvas, a little bolder, but it really does depend on the ink you use on the cardstock. So, i say just pick one and think of it as two for one!!!

I like Canvas better. It shows up more than the Linen. The Linen is for more of a subtle look.

Personally I prefer Linen as I like the softer look.

I use Canvas on card fronts, or layering pieces. I generally use Linen for the main images--if I'm stamping florals on the main images, the Linen gives it a soft, fabric look. I also use them both with Versamark, and stamp over my main image, and then use clear embossing powder for a unique look.
They are very different, and sorry--you need both! ;)

Linen is the perfect background stamp!! I think it is very easy to layer with other images and other backgrounds.

If you've gone back and forth for so long your answer is clearly both. However perhaps one at a time is best at which point if you really can't decide the old eeny meeny miny mo/coin toss always works for me... if I end up being dissappointed in my random choice I go with the other one.

Definitely buy both but if you must only buy one, I tend to get more use out of Canvas.

linen or canvas?
Well, I have canvas and really like it, however, if you felt that you couldn't decide, go to
www.cornishheritagefarms.com and check out their backgrounders, as they call them. You might be able to find two and get them UM and then you would have only spent what it would cost for one SU background. They have lots of choices and the smart backing is terrific! Last time I bought from them, they were having a free shipping on orders over $25. Trust me, that wouldn't be hard!

Both
I agree.... You really need both. I've had Canvas since it came out. I just got Linen. Everything I'm doing at the moment has Linen on it. But I love them both. And use them for different things. Canvas is more masculine to me. Linen more feminine. MHO.
I couldn't do w/o either.
