Why do you think Stampin’ Up chose to use the term mask instead of stencil? I’m sure this is a marketing decision but I find this to be confusing to new stampers. To me, a mask is when you want to put an image in the foreground so you mask it and then stamp around it. If you do a Google image search for the beautiful sunflower stencil that Stampin Up has out right now (called abundant beauty) you get a lot of beauty products in the image search including a scary looking plug-in full face mask for $400. 😂. As a literal person, it kind of makes me crazy but also makes me laugh at the same time.
I'm with you. Stencils are what they are and what they always shall be...look at a dictionary! The only way to make use of the word mask for what job they do is to extract "covering" out of a mask definition and create a new definition since they do "cover" something up. They sure would sell more of them if they called them stencils!
SU gave confusing names to other things in the past: "clear mount stamp" instead of "cling rubber stamp" is one that created all kinds of confusion.
And you are totally right about confusing customers. I just told them "SU calls them masks. Other companies call them stencils, which is a better term." They always wonder why.
I don't know what products you're referring to but stencils and masks are defined terms for sure. Actually - I just looked it up - that's definitely a stencil LOL.
