Are you talking about the paper ones, e.g. Sizzix? Or the clear photopolymer ones? If paper, I toss them after I've used both sides, which is usually many months' worth of usage.
Oh, I know what you mean! I've got the plastic sheets that you describe (that can also fit in a stamping platform). I 'accidentally' cleaned some of the sticky off of one of my mats, and it's just smooth plastic underneath. I don't think there's a domestic solution for putting the sticky layer back oneself, short of covering it with double-sided adhesive and then adding low tack tape, sticky side up. That was actually my first homemade mat using cardboard as the substrate, and it lasted about 2 years!
Pixie spray works. I recommend spraying outside with the mat in a vertical position. When it’s laid flat, you can get larger bits of the adhesive instead of just a fine spray.
I don't know pixie spray, so I looked it up. Expensive! Plus, it doesn't ship here anyway. But it sounds like a perfect solution for US buyers. Now that I think of it, I've got a can of old spray adhesive i could test out myself. Might work for my ruined mat!

Try just rinsing it with water like you would the back of a cling stamp. Maybe just dust. Water should not (?) remove the sticky. What does the mfg suggest? You could email them.
If you have an art store or hardware-they may have a small can of spray stuff like pixie. Unless you use it constantly it should last for a good amount of time in terms of cost.

Not sure about hoptownracer, but I removed the sticky from the plastic completely, lol. My fault, I used a little purple meths (which is peculiar to Oz & NZ) and it was fatal 😄.
I will have to try that. I have a couple of glues that came from the Dollar Tree that I suspect will be useless, as they have been on everything else. I do have some Alene's TIOO though. I also have a can of the Elmer's glue spray. I think it is repositionable like Alene's if allowed to dry on it's own first. I could try that too. Thanks for telling me that about the Aleenes. I may try that. I hate to be wasteful and throw things out if they can still be used.
The pixie spray works wonders for mats that are losing their stickiness.
I had the Brutus Monroe sticky mat. That was awful. It had way too much "stickiness". I used their special spray for cleaning. I contacted the company for help but received no response.
I bought some Brutus Monroe sticky mats when they were on sale for very little, and have never liked them. They're way too sticky!
So, which sticky mat is your favorite -- you know, just sticky enough?
I actually like the ones I got from the Dollar Tree the best. I think the Brutus Monroe one was the only other one I bought, but my memory isn't the best. But I also have some of the sticky sheets (Sizzix I think) that I use in my homemade personal stamp positioner, and they work great. Their sticky just doesn't last as long as I'd like. You have to tape them down on the sides to keep them from coming loose.

@hoptownracer1 Yesterday I tried re-sticky-ing two paper sheets and a plastic mat with a 50/50 solution of a repositionable glue and water. I'm happy to report that this was a huge success! There was some minor buckling of the paper sheets (as expected), but not enough to render them unusable, esp after a night under the books. Thanks for raising this issue. You've saved me a lot of potential money!
I don't know what I'll do with those two bottles of useless glue spray I got from the dollar tree. They aren't the slightest bit sticky! I even tired spraying glitter paper with them to seal in the glitter. They wouldn't even do that. Guess I'll spray the contents out and toss them. Not a bargain if it is worthless trash! I might try spraying a bit on photo paper to see if it will leave spots the inks won't seep into. Can't think of any other use. So glad I have my good glues to use!
