My niece told me today that she wants to start making her own cards (woo-hoo!!!!!!) So, for her birthday I thought I would put together a starter kit for her. I was thinking I will get a pretty decorative box and fill it with card & envelopes, a matstack of DP, glue sticks, colored pencils, an assortment of colored cardstock, some ribbon and other embellishments. I also will take the time to stamp a huge pile of images from my stamp collection for her to color.
What else would you include? Anyone ever put together a kit like this?

Sounds like a nice kit - or you could go with - a few stamps that you think she would like and a stamp pad so she can do her own stamping - either way would be a nice way to get her started!
maybe a little 'handmade with love' stamp, so she can sign the back of her cards? Also, maybe a few self-adhesive embellishments, like stickers, or adhesive ribbon or buttons?
what about a few stamps and an inkpad? Michaels and AC Moore both have $1 stamps (clear or wood mounted). Clear stamps are easiest for me to use, but maybe she would prefer the wood?
Before investing money in lots of supplies for someone so young, I would purchase her a kit that has everything included. These kits have everything needed and pre cut to make a number of cards. This way it's easy and quick. It's a good way to see if there really is interest before investing a lot of money. I know AC Moore carries a nice selection of them and I'm sure Michaels does also.
Double-stick tape instead of glue sticks (stuff put together with glue sticks don't always stay stuck together)
I second the idea of getting a kit first too... a friend of mine spent $$ for starter stuff for her granddaughter (after she also expressed interest), but turns out she wasn't really interested THAT much. It was just something fun to do with grandma, but not so much on her own, you know?
When anyone asks me about scrapbooking or cardmaking I always suggest starting with a kit. I think its so overwhelming to stand in the aisle at the store and try to decide what you need and where to start. It's enough to make you change your mind!
How about a coupon for time with you in your craft space.... She can stamp the images she wants and she'd have an expert right there with her to help her!

This past Easter, we gave our then 5 year old granddaughter pop dots, 2 ink pads, stamp cleaner, Stampinscrub and the Forest Friends stamp set in one of the photo boxes you can get at M's or J's. She spends a lot of time with both her Mommy and I in our scrap rooms and when she opened the box she exclaimed, "My first professional stamps!" She was so excited. Since then we have added to her "professional stamps" and ink collections.
What a great gift! I have done this for a couple of stamping newbies they can get addicted quickly too....I would pick a stamp on a topic they love. A stamp cleaner; some blank cards; if you have a cricut or diecutter--cut them some special cuts;
Cheers, Holley

I have 11 year old twins. They always get into my stuff. The only time I can stamp is when they go to bed. lol. Does the mom craft? whatever you buy won't get wasted if she doesn't get into it as much as she thought she would. Just a thought. I love the kit ideas, also. Maybe get her started with birthday or invitations. This way she can make birthday cards for the family, or her own invites for her party's.
I bought my niece a kit at around the same age. I found it at AC Moore, with a coupon very reasonable. She loved the gift plus it was a HUGE box which always wins points with younger ones! It had a bunch of wood mount stamps, paper, markers, ink pads, etc. She loved it, used it a ton, even mailed me some cards!!! As she got older her interest in cardmaking waned but I still have the cards she sent me!
11 y/o girls love glitter glue...good idea to start with a kit and add some embellishments she can use to personalize the cards...my 5 y/o dgd loves to stamp with her mom & me

This is the best idea of all. For an eleven yr old - once it becomes "social" it takes on a whole new meaning. Might want to include a friend of hers on the coupon. If her BFF gets into it, so will she. Also, be sure to include some bling. Glitter/Sparkle pens, faxu pearls & jewels, sparkly ribbon. There isn't an eleven yr old girl in this country that won't be attracted to that. LOL

Little girls particularly like bling -- so definitely some self stick rhinestones.
Glenda - love the MONK avatar. What a GREAT show that was. :p

I just did this for my niece this month for her birthday. She turned 9 this year. I bought a stamp kit from Walmart. It had about 6 or 7 clear stamp sets, card bases and evelopes, and an instruction sheet how to use the stamps. I had to add the clear block (which I just took the ones from my stash I don't use), some patterned paper, glue runners, and ink pads. I bought the ink pads from the dollar store, and most of the other stuff I just went through my stash and pulled anything I though I probably wouldn't use. I'm glad she's 9 and like stickers, cause I have so many that I thought I would use on scrapbook pages and they're still in the wrappers 5 years later. She absolutely loved it. As soon as she opened the package, she laid everything out and we had to have a crafting play date over skype. She was so excited about stamping her first project. She stamped one image and used one of the one's from the stack of stamped images I sent her. It was a lot of fun. Your niece will love it.
