Did this at an all-day stampathon, we didn't use any ink but then highlighted them with metallic rub-ons afterward.
When I tried it on my own a while back, I wasn't impressed; but once I had someone show me the right way, it looks totally cool. Here's what she showed me:
This works best with bold stamps - not outlines. And you need to heat the foam more than what I was. The demo had me heat one side of the fun foam until it looked like it was kind of puffing up, then flip it over and heat the other side until it was kind of puffing up, then flip it back to the first side and zap it with the heat gun for a little bit, then stamp. Press hard and hold the stamp down for a while. Once it cools down, you can do the rub-ons to highlight it.
These look really cool when they're done - kind of like tooled leather.
