Hello! I have purchased some ink to stamp on fabric...just wondering the best way to do this. I am assuming that I have to put something between the layers of fabric so that it does not go through...do I need to heat set it??? HELP!
Even stazon will wash out of the fabric. I used SU Craft ink with good results. I did put paper between the fabric layers to cut down bleeding and I did heat set before washing.

Find a quilter who has some freezer paper (or buy a small roll in the grocery store). It's white, has a waxy side that sticks to fabric when ironed, and it stabilizes the fabric really well to stamp or write on. It peels off easily when you're done stamping. Iron it to the back of the fabric you want to stamp. Most inks need to be heat set, so I would try some scrap pieces first to make sure you get the stability and results you like from the freezer paper.

Freezer paper can be used with larger images...have been doing it successfully for about 30 years! Be sure to wash and dry the fabric without any type of softener in either the wash or dry cycle. With the iron set at cotton, press the freezer paper to the fabric (shiny side of freezer paper on wrong side of the fabric). Be sure none of the shiny side of the freezer comes in contact with the iron...that shiny surface is a thin plastic.
Stamp with an ink that is permanent on fabric (a plain pigment is NOT). When the ink is dry, place either a piece of cooking parchment paper or a Teflon Pressing Sheet over the image and press til the fabric feels slightly warm. If you'd like to color the image, use either textile markers or reinkers (apply with a brush) of the same type used for stamping. Allow to dry, then heat set as you did the image. When the fabric is cool, remove the freezer paper. Do not wash the stamped fabric for one week...takes that long for the ink and markers to completely cure.

Classic ink only washes out when you don't want it to, such as when you are stamping it on fabric for a project. If you drop it on your clothes accidentally it is permanent! ;) :p

I've used Pallette Pigment inks an they are PERMANENT. I stamped on an unwashed garment (not a fabric person...didn't know), didn't heat set it...but it didn't come out in my front loader which heats the water to 180 degrees and washes items for 1.5 hours.
Nicole Heady used Palette Pigment ink on her blog and has a tutorial on stamping fabric onesies...it is awesome and got me started on this addictive to make beautiful gift!

If you are stamping small images then using pigment ink works well. If you have colorbox or versamagic...I am waiting on the adirondack pigment inks, I'm sure they will work well. Just heat set it with your iron.
You can't use the dye inks...they will just wash out.
I have found the palette hybrid inks not strong enough in color (they tend to look a little faded when direct stamping) The palette metallic line is quite good on fabric though.
If you have large solid images then acrylic paint is something to look at...it has nice opacity (You won't see as much of the fabric showing through) and is very durable when heat set.
The most important thing is to play....I find out a lot by trial and error.
I want to say too....I am loving DIRECT TO FABRIC stamping, that way I can wash it again and again without wear showing. You can also color with your copics too...if you have a very tight weave cotton and don't go too close to your lines.
There is a tid bit on what I have learned so far....I love combining my rubber stamps with sewing....a wonderful way to make a fabric project unique!
I would buy an extra onesie or piece of fabric to test on. I find the pressure differs depending on the fabric I'm stamping on. So I like to test on a scrap piece first to get it right.
well, i have a friend who's birthday is coming up, and i was planning to get her a gift card to a fav store... but wanted something else to go with it. what a cool idea! after seeing Nicole's blog entry, i decided to add a hand"painted" shirt to the gift. so, went to Jo's with coupons on hand for the inks i needed.... [i only spent $50! ;) they had some card packs on sale for $.97 and cuttlebug dies for just $1.97. they HAD to come home with me.] if my shirt turns out, i'll post a pic tonight or tomorrow. i bought four versamagic inks... thanks for all the great ideas & advice ladies!
