Question Stampin Up Carry On sold for $168.00 on Ebay!!

I was shocked to see that the Carry On set went for 168.00 on Ebay. Stampin Up announced this hostess set is currently unavailable due to legal complications, and that they will give further info when they know more. It will be interesting to see if it is re released or not. What are your thoughts?

I think that there are people with more money than sense. $168 for a stamp set???

I also think that I've seen many versions of stamp sets like this everywhere. Amuse has one, I believe. I think I also saw one at Michaels.

<shrug> Not my money though, so I can't say that I really care all that much.

I was watching that same auction and I couldn't belive it, but to each their own I guess. I would never pay that kind of money for any stamp set.

I'm still mystified why Stampin'Up! has legal concerns about this when there are so many other stamp companies using that slogan...

Be that as it may - I'm ALWAYS shocked when I see stamp sets selling for the outrageous amounts that they do on ebay from time to time. The most I've ever paid for a stamp set was $35, and it was only because it was for a birthday gift for my best friend (she's worth it). She'd wanted it for a VERY long time and been unable to get it.

Maybe whoever bought the set thinks that it will be rare sooner than later, and they'll be able to: a) resell it for even more or, b) have bragging rights about having something that no one else (or at least very few) has. Still crazy, IMO!

Exactly!

I think they're forgetting the message of the set. It doesn't say "It's a Crisis, Act in Haste"

I don't know ... although the SU! font is the same or very close to what is on the poster.
And it seems to only be the "carry on" phrase that is a difficulty.

But ... obviously something has come up, and as with most legal things, we won't know ANY of the details. Eventually it will be officially retired, or SU! will come up with a solution.

Strangely, it's still not a set that appeals to me. Although if I'd been smart enough to buy it during the demo pre-order, I'd feel richer, owning such a valuable set. (and then dd would go and use it, smudge the ink blocks, and it wouldn't be quite so valuable!)

Ditto. Probably because I don't like the idea of being told to "keep calm" or "calm down" or whatever. Although I do have a Stamping Bella stamp that says "Keep calm and eat a cupcake" with a cute image. But I plan on using that for cards that have something like "You're 30?!" on the front with the sentiment on the inside.

What a wonderful idea!
Actually - the SU! set (should it ever come back) does have the "eat a cupcake" option. Although in my case, I've used that option FAR TOO MANY TIMES in real life! ;)

On Thursday after my shift at Mikes I was walking around the store looking for some crafts for the kids for this weeks cause it is first week of summer and school is out and all.

So I walk on down to look at the stamps and what do I find but the Hampton arts Keep Clam and Carry on Stamp that look exactly like the poster.

Yep I have an extra 50% coupon with me bought the kids crafts projects and bought me that stamp!

Walked out of Mikes under $12!! Pretty good considering I only had a 4 hour shift!!

$168!!!! I got mine for 5!!! HA!!!!

The whole "Keep Calm and Carry On" saying doesn't appeal to me. It's just too trendy right now. I've seen countless variants of it (my personal favorite was "Freak Out and Throw Things"). And I can't figure out what purpose I would ever use it for on a greeting card.

But if someone is willing to spend that much money just to have it, I wish I was one of the lucky ones who managed to get one before they were discontinued. Nothing like a little "profit for nothing" to get my heart beating. And yes, I totally took advantage of a couple of parents who wanted to buy their child's love by selling a few Furby dolls on ebay back when it was the hot toy.

Gee, and I'm thinking of all of the other stamps sets and "stuff" I could have purchased for $168.00! That's a lot of dp; ef's; powders; inks; embellishments;brads; card stock; markers, pencils....Oh my

Me either! I didn't want to say that in my earlier post since everyone seems to like this stamp set and I figured I was in the minority, but I really don't like this set at all.

Unreal! The idea of paying $168 for a stamp set is crazy. I agree with Patty this stamp set really didn't appeal to me. You can always computer generate the phrase.

While in Disneyworld I saw the poster "Keep Calm and Carry On" in a shop at EPCOT. I asked what the slogan meant and the salesperson said it was to be used by the British during WWII in the event of a Nazi invasion of England. IMO, it seems a bit disrespectful that some stamp companies have altered and therefore trivialized the original slogan to "Keep calm and eat a cupcake", etc.

Keep Calm and Carry On - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As my in-laws are British I can assure you that they don't feel that the poster is being trivialized. It wasn't widely distributed. Most of the first alterations were from all my British friends etc. Most Brits have a healthy disregard for the establishment.

Maybe I will start a "Loose Lips, Sink Ships" trend! what do ya think everyone?

As for SU - the image is public domain so I don't know what their legal issues are unless it is another stamp/image company.

I like the keep calm message. Seems like our lives are just the opposite. I also love such little poster had such a big job to do. I don't think that poster was ever actually used tho.
I've always thought how the heck one would "Keep Calm" if one's city was being bombed!!!
That said, "I'm a bit tired of seeing this slogan, too. But I still love it." Strange!
I saw one at a concert the othe night about drinking that was really funny!

I had seen info on another thread about this. Here's what may be the source of the issue. Someone HAS trademarked the phrase. BBC story link

Default Carry On

I also like the history and the message of Keep Calm Carry On. However, what someone did was take a public domain image and obtained a trade mark on it. He is now harassing people with litigation threats in order to make a buck (or a pound, in this case).

The KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON campaign e-petition

The UK denied the trade mark request and is now trying to get the EU to withdraw its approval. Trade marking this image would be similar to someone obtaining a trade mark for an image of Santa Claus - not on the same scale, of course, but the concept is the same.

It's hurting more than a stamp company. That phrase is on souvenirs all over Britain, and his harassment is hurting small businesses throughout Britain. Hopefully, the UK will get this straightened out and SU will re-release the set.

I love the set! But not enough to pay $150 for it, so I'll be patient... eat a cupcake... and keep calm.

I hang out in CE a lot - I find it amusing that we are frowning about the effect of Capitalism. That asided he has "petitioned" for trademark. To me it would be as if someone tried to trademark a map that has been issued by the government that IS public domain. Be interesting if he gets his trademark. FTR the Wiki article does mention the trademark cases.

From my non-legal perspective they seem pretty groundless and makes me wonder about any other public domain image.

Just from a historical perspective, British cities were bombed after the poster was circulated. But I do like how such a short phrase exhibits so much Britishness.

My football (soccer) club has a great parody of it!

I was tired of the Keep Calm fad six months ago. Today, I wouldn't walk across the street for the set, even if they were giving it away for free.

I think that is a lot of money to spend on a stampset. But if they have it, it is theirs to spend. I would feel guilty spending that much on one. I have a stamp with that saying on it, and use it for my Jane Austen group birthdays and fun occasions that we celebrate together. I use my teapot with that saying all the time for our teaparties.

There's one similar to this in the hostess section of the new catalog. Just for once, I wish I could sell something on eBay that would take off!!

This is the set that we are talking about. The Carry On set is a current hostess set and it's no longer available. Hopefully SU will release it again, but we don't know.
