Whoo-hoo! I just finished booking my vacation to Alaska! Does anyone know of a stamp store in Anchorage? I'll need to have a shopping fix since I'll be there a week!
Okay there is not much shopping here in Anchorage as far as crafting goes. We do have a REALLY nice JoAnn's store in the Northway Mall. The one in the Dimond area is not so good. There is also a very nice Michael's store in the Dimond area. We did have two other neat stores to go into but they both just recently closed.
Do make sure you hit these restaurants though. . .Lucky Wishbone, Peanut Gallery, SourDough Mining company.
Just thought of one more thing. If you get a rainy day and need something to do indoors. My favorite place to go to in Anchorage is the Bear's tooth. It is a theater that shows movies that just left the theaters like right now they are showing Meet the Robinsons. They only charge $3 a seat. But the best part is you order your food (which is delicious!) and they bring it to your seat and you get to eat while you watch the movie!!
Wow, thanks for the great tips! I truly appreciate it as we honestly don't have a ton of ideas about what we'll be doing/eating/seeing on this trip, so this is incredible info!
We keep hearing horrible things about the mosquitos, too. Are they really that terrible? Maybe I'll need a mosquito stamp, ha ha.
Oh yeah they are bad! Any where you may go around water they are going to surround you! We went to a going away party for a friend at a local chalet near a lake and I was spraying the Off right on them and it didn't even phase them!!

Jane when are you leaving for Alaska? We have a cruise booked for July 1-8th. I didn't need to hear about the mosquitos. When we were in Yellowknife a couple years back the mosquitos/etc. just about ate us up.
Hey, Abby we are touring Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skagway is there any stores in those towns???
Jane have a great trip.
Kathy
K Benko, I am flying there on July 20 and will be there for a week. We are still planning our itinerary, so if anyone has great ideas, I'd love to know! We do have reservations for a bus tour through Denali, which I'm eagerly anticipating. I'm going to meet my parents, who are driving their RV from Oklahoma! This is my dad's dream of a lifetime, so I'm just wanting to make it wonderful for him. If I get to do some fun things, that's great, but it's really all about him. We're definitely interested in seeing other parts besides Anchorage, too.
Hi! Yes, there is a stamp store in Anchorage, it's called the Stamp Attic and it's in the Dimond area. Yes, the Roadrunner is still here and as good as ever!!!! There is a place near Elmendorf AFB where you can see the salmon jumping up a fish ladder. That is just awesome to watch!!!
Wishing you and your family an awesome time here!!!! If you have any other questions, you can e-mail me ([email protected]) or pm me.
Dear Kathy,
I really don't know anything about those areas. I live on Elmendorf AFB and dont know much outside of Anchorage to be honest.
The salmon jumping is great I agree. It is called Ship Creek. While you are down there you can also visit the Ulu factory and if you go on the weekend they have the market where there is a bunch of booths set up from local vendors.
Jane, SnowyAk is right. Stamp Attic is about it now for us in Anchorage. Betty is great and she carries a nice variety of Alaska stamps and stickers. She also carries A Muse and Memory Box stamps. She is located at 9191 Old Seward Hwy #13 and her phone is 907-344-3227. Be sure to tell her that you learned about the store from Splitcoast!! Have a nice trip.
Also, for your scrapbook pages when you get home go to www.vacationscrapbooksupply.com They have wonderful stickers, embellishments and papers for just about everywhere but they have a whole page of great Alaska stuff. Free shipping over $35. It's my new favorite online store
Oh WOW, I am going to Alaska also! I leave July 17. It is a land and cruise tour. Fairbanks, Denali, Mt McKinley,Juneau, Skagway,Ketchikan And then spending and extra day in Vancouver. Are there any stamp or scrape along here? This is such a long trip but i can't wait to see beautiful Alaska. It would be nice to get a fix along the way.
We are visiting our daughter grand daughter, SIL june 22-july 2...they live in sitka...might be going to juneau while we are out there....anything in juneau?
Hello...Yesterday a new SCSer introduced herself, Juno, and she IS in Juneau. Wonder if she would reply to this thread and let you all know what's down her way.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting that link! I'll be going to Ireland this September (vacation of my life) and I'm sure I'll be ordering supplies from this site.
I visited Alaska about ten years ago...visited Anchorage in June.
Absolutely gorgeous state...but the mosquito should be declared the state insect. Eck!
Wow lots of Alaska trips this year! We're going to Alaska too, land tour, then cruise! Then a couple of days in Vancouver. Somehow I don't think DH would be too impressed if I wandered off to Stamp Attic, but you can bet I'm writing down the address and phone #!
Thanks so much, everyone! I will definitely pay a visit to Betty at Stamp Attic. I'm so excited! And how neat to learn of so many other people visiting AK, too. I am really thrilled about all of this. Thanks, AlaskaGirl, for posting the vacation website, too. I am not a scrapbooker, but perhaps this trip will turn me into one.
Hi I see I was mentioned in this thread how fun - I just dropped by. In Juneau we do have a Joann's store at the Nugget Mall. It is not a huge one but they have a pretty good stamping section. We had one pretty good scrapbooking store but it closed a couple of years ago and there really hasn't been anything great to fill the gap. I get a lot at Joann's and have not one but two wonderful SU demonstrators, plus I get stuff on ebay. Hooray for ebay.
I have not been to anchorage in a long time but if I do I will head to Stamp Attic.
I've been here in Juneau for 16 years, and before that have lived in Denali Park and Anchorage. I am originally from Oregon too, so this can be my thread can't it?
I want to share that I am going out of town tomorrow and will be away from internet access until June 17. So if it seems like I am introducing myself and then disappearing, it is not my intention. If you want to ask me anything about Juneau I'll check in after the 17th. In the meantime enjoy.
I haven't read through the other responses yet, so if I am being repetitious, please excuse me!
Stamp Attic on the Old Seward Hwy (in South Anchorage) is a small but cute stamp store, overflowing with tons-o-stamps, inks, paper, tools, idea books, embossing stencils, etc, etc. The owner, Betty, is a sweetheart and everyone who works there is very helpful and friendly. I shop there a couple times a month and I live about 20+ miles away (one way). Here is a link to the store:

The owner, Raylene, has a very cute store. She recently relocated and gave her store a new name; I've only been out there twice since then (it's about 28 miles from my house, one way), but both times she had some great things in stock. There is also a JoAnns out in Wasilla and four scrapbook stores (for Alaskan paper and embellishments) --

That's amazing that Wasilla has so many LSS. We are not travelling that far north which is too bad. Thanks to Juno for noting the Joann's store in Juneau. I will definiately try to stop there. Hopefully its not too far out of our way.
This has turned into a very interesting thread. There are so many SCS going to Alaska - we should all meet in one place - wouldn't that be a hoot.
Hoping all have a good trip and take lots of deep woods mosquito spray!!!!

Well, we are back from Alaska. I just was wondering how everyones trip went??? We were up there July 1 - 8th. It was very cold and very wet, rrrrrr. Every morning we woke up to 50 - 55 degrees and usually raining. Juneau was very wet but they said they get an average of 13 1/2 feet of rain annually, so really do you expect to have sunshine?? We still really enjoyed our trip and the cruisin was awesome, I even won another cruise to be taken within a year, WOO HOO. Caribbean here we come....
So tell me about your cruise experience...
Kathy
Hi from Juneau, we are having the rainy week of all rainy weeks. We have had some glorious weather this summer too. You just have to be psychic and be able to predict when they are going to occur!
Here in Anchorage it has just started to become a bit rainy but we needed it b/c the cotton wood trees were putting so much pollen in the air it looked as though it was snowing in July!
We leave for Anchorage a week from Monday. We go all the way up to Prudhoe Bay then back to Whittier to get on the Ship. Somehow I don't think DH would be too impressed if I wanted to go find all the scrapbook stores!
Is there any Verizon Wireless service in Alaska? The customer service lady wasn't very helpful and the VWonline map shows no service. So I can leave my phone at home and tell my boss he can't contact me? ;)
I don't use Verizon, but do remember someone telling me that they're with Cell One or Cell One is with them. If that is true, then you might have coverage.
I leave this Friday, and I can't wait! My parents are already there and they just keep calling and saying how beautiful it is! (they have service through Cingular/AT&T)
I lived in Anchorage and Kenai several years, but wasn't a crafter then!
I just wanted to tell y'all to check out the Alaska Native Hospital Gift shop for authentic souveniers (sp?). It is only open like from 10 am until 2 pm but it isn't too hard to find. Native Alaskans sometimes pay for their hospital bills with artwork and the prices are much better than all the tourist traps downtown!
My hubby worked close to the Arctic Roadrunner by that Creek and we were one of the last winners of the annual race they used to have every summer until they had to stop (in the 80's, this really dates me!) We had to eat their last summer to show the kids, who weren't impressed!
If you go eat at the Brewhouse pub downtown, have my best friend's daughter, Tania wait on you. She is going to medical school at University of Washington in the Fall and needs the money (just kidding!) It is a good restaurant, but kind of pricey!
There was a great, cheap pizza restaurant on Old Seward Highway (close to the Mall), but we had to wait a long time to get service and I can't think of the name of it?
Have a lot of fun on your trips! If you like wildlife, about an hour drive south of Anchorage is an Alaska wildlife preserve of rescued animals, moose, brown and black bears, foxes, caribou, eagle, and even a porcupine. It was a big hit with all of our family members and was very affordable!
Have fun visiting up there! My husband gets to go to Kenai every three months, but I don't get to go near as often and I miss it! Dress in layers and bring rain gear!

I believe that you're talking of the Moose's Tooth. Do they EVER have great Pizza. What's even better though is the Bear Tooth Theatre as ajcmeyer said. It's owned by the Moose's Tooth but better because you can eat while you watch the movie.

Hello!
This was a fun thread to read...I think I need an Alaskan cruise now. :-D Maybe next year!!
My whole darn family is from up there...including me...so I know what you all are talking about with those mosquitos and stuff. Really, they are like the state BIRD!!! I remember one time my mom got a little "bird house" that was for mosquitos. (they didnt really use it of course...just for giggles)
If you all are headed to the Anchorage area another "cool" place to go outside of Anchorage is Portage Glacier...should be able to look it up on-line. Also, the Alaska Zoo. It is a really sweet place to visit, with a lot of rescued wildlife. It all was started with my favorite elephant, Annabelle after she was won as a prize in the '60's. Annabelle passed away a few years ago, but the African elephant Maggie, is still there. I dont know if they still have this...but a few years back I purchased a painting from Annabelle, and then in 2001 while I was visiting, the elephant keeper allowed me to pick out paint colors and go in the elephant barn with Maggie as she painted me a picture...it was sooooooooooooooooooooooooo neat!!! The paintings can be kinda pricey, but they appreciate any type of donation/purchases they receive. It was just the coolest experience. If they still do that, I really recommend it.
Have fun in Alaska...take lots of pictures...and keep your "moose" eyes on....you will most likely see one while you're there.
