Silliest Thing You've Said or Done re: Papercrafting
While I was hanging out at the hospital today (DH had surgery--nothing serious), I studied my SU catty, trying to narrow down yet another order. It suddenly occurred to me how silly I was when I started papercrafting. I actually told my DH we would save money on cards if I made them rather than buying them at Hallmark. Stupid thing is, I believed myself! Bwaahaaahaaa!
I also believed I would never, ever, not in a million years start scrapbooking. Hundreds of scrapbook pages later, I realize resistance was futile.
This got me wondering...what about everybody else? What preconceived ideas, silly notions, or stupid misconceptions have you had? What have you done that you said you never would?
I also told my DH we would save so much money on Hallmark cards...I swear I thought that Hallmark would go out of business when I started making cards!

I used to only want to buy stamp sets that served multiple seasons (think holiday tag time, greetings galore etc.). Now, while those sets are lovely and versatile, I now know that the stamp isn't the only thing that shapes the theme of a card. I now know different inks, papers, placements & techniques can take a card from baby shower to chrtismas & back again.
The funny thing is, I hardly ever use Holiday Tag Time, and I wanted it so bad!

Tandra you're hilarious!!
Mine is:
"Before when I did this, I bought a lot of stuff before I knew what to do with it! I promise I will only buy what I need for a specific project, and not start anything new until I finish my project."
SPEWWWWWWWWWWWW!
I to was never going to start scrapbooking. To expensive. 5 books later...
I also was put on "spending freeze" last month after our trip to my SIL. She has a Hobby Lobby and Archivers. I did get the " I will only buy it if it is 100% absolutely needed in there. Well DH went out of town tonight and I went straight to M's and bought the Martha S bat punch and spider punch. I have to have to make my halloween cards!
I probably could send a Hallmark card to all my family and friends for every occasion, and still not be up to the amount I've spend on stamps and supplies.
My DH jokes that I've got the cost per card down to $40. If he only knew!

I'm hopeless. Today I was watching QVC papercrafting on TV and dashed madly to the computer to order a huge kit that looked just wonderful.
As I was about to click "submit order", something was nagging at me. I checked order status for all my previous orders.
Yep. No wonder I thought I would like the kit. I liked it the last time they had a scrapbook show and already ordered it.
Sure enough, I checked my stash and there it was...still in the box.
Been there, done that, only I clicked "finalize order"! It was StampinTreasures, and I called a few hours later. They changed the order for me over the phone. I was shocked and amazed at that level of customer service and have been buying stamps from Diane ever since!

Had to laugh out loud on that one!
The funniest thing is that I am NOT a sentimental person... DH & I don't exchange cards - such a waste of money... the running joke in our house is when he says "Honey can you make yourself a birthday card/get well card/anniversary card?"
I like making cards, but in order to be cost effective, I NEED to buy supplies to make card holder tins, birthday reminders, and gift bags. You know, all the essentials ;) So my grand plan of making cheap fun cards gets more expensive every time I log onto SCS and get those great ideas!

Thought of another...
"Oh, honey, I just need to pop into Hobby Lobby for a minute. Adhesive's half off, so I'm just gonna pick up a few packages. That's all. I promise!"
I also told my DH we would save so much money on Hallmark cards...I swear I thought that Hallmark would go out of business when I started making cards!
This thread is hilarious. I have bought several single stamps of the exact same kind. Today, they are being given to a 13 year old girl who is starting to stamp! At least something good came out of that.
" Oh, DH! This is my very last order for a long time. Really. Oh, that other order from yesterday? Oh, I ordered that months ago. I didn't even want it and tried to cancel it!"
When I first started scrapbooking several years ago (before I even knew what stamps were ), I promised my husband that if he please, pretty please, bought me one of those big, black, rolling storage things that ALL of my scrapbooking stuff would fit in there and it'd all be in one place, neatly organized!!!
Let's see, now my stuff is in TWO rooms (no closet in one room) and takes up at least 10 feet of space!! Sad to say, it didn't take me long to get there either!
My next door neighbour got me into stamping. He showed me his supplies and I remember thinking: "why does he need 6 different stamps with a Christmas sentiment on them, surely one would be enough?" He lent me supplies so I could try stamping to see how I got on with it before I bought anything myself. I remember thinking "well, I won't be buying lots of stamps with the same sort of sayings on them or lots of similar images".
I ordered 3, yes 3, of the identical thing on ebay.
Been there, done that. I have several duplicate sets, because, of course, I'm secretly trolling EBay while at work, so I can't quickly go and make sure I don't have that particular stamp set. I obviously really adore Happy Harmony, as this is the only one I've ordered 3 x on Ebay; others have just been a duplicate order.
This thread made me sad -- I have nothing funny to add. I guess stampin' and scrappin' and my life as a demo are just too darn serious to me! Maybe my sense of humor is going by the wayside like my eyesight and memory.
Mary Beth
I'm sorry this thread made you sad! My intent was to get us laughing at our silly, obsessive, evolving selves. Perhaps if you recognize that all this silliness and consumerism results in cards, projects, and scrapbooks for people we love, and expressions of our affection, concern, and care for others, then you'll be able to find your lost sense of humor about it all. After all, when we can take something that is so much fun for us and turn it into something nice for others, isn't that worth more than a few mis-spent bucks? (((((hugs)))))
There was a time no even 4 years ago when I swore I would never be one of "those scrapbook people". Well that changed when my brother went to Iraq. Then I swore I would NEVER be one of "those Rubber Stamping People". 2 yeas later and I am SU Demo. hehehehe

Amen to that, sister! haha! My sister tried FOR YEARS to get me to scrap. I hung my head in shame the day I called her to tell her I was signing up as a SU demo. She said "Ok, the clock is ticking until your first scrapbook page is made..." Less than two months later - She took pictures of me scrapping my first page so she could scrapbook it!

Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated.
My DH looked at me VERY seriously today and asked me, "when will this end?" This question resulted from my complaining that I need more storage/organization stuff to FIT all my stuff. We got into a discussion about how he thinks I DON'T need all the SU colors!
Needless to say, I looked at him like he had 10 heads! Then answered (stifling back my laugh), "honey, I don't think this will ever end". ... he turned green and walked away!

HA! Actually MaryBeth is QUITE funny! Our emails back and forth are sometimes hilarious! You make ME laugh,MB!!!
This thread is so funny!! I was going to 'quote' and reply, but I see myself in so many different posts, I can't quote just one!! Thanks for the laughs (and letting me see I'm not the only one who...bought/said/did/etc.)!!
Criminy, 2 months in and I can already see so many things I've said!
I remember a few years ago when my DH was telling me about an ex of his who is a little kooky, one of the measures of kookiness was that she scrapbooks. I thought only 'other' people did that! LOL! He loves the scrapbook I'm making right now of our honeymoon though
I also went in planning to only buy things for my current project. I can't help it if my current project requires about 3 dozen ink colors, oodles of paper colors, brads, eyelets, charms, chipboard, different sets of clear alphabet stamps, patterned paper, adhesives, punches.....
I may have to refer to it as the $400 scrapbook......

That's funny. I just finished the scrapbook for my parent's Suprise 40th Anniversary Party. I called my mom to tell her it was finished, but that she would receive it under one VERY IMPORTANT condition. I needed to know that when she and my dad passes away...I was to get this thing back I told her that I had invested big $$$$ and lots and lots of time and there was no way in heck one of my brothers or sister were going to walk off with it because of birth order. I even made her put it into writing (via e-mail)
She thought it was hilarious that I am not worried about getting $$$ or jewelry in the will...I just want my dang scrapbook back!!!;)
hey Lutheran, Every time I see your screen name on a poat I think to myself that i should change mine to "Methodist".
I remember borrowing stamps from my M-I-L and thinking "My Goodness this woman has wasted her money on so many stamp sets!" Now I have a stash she doesn't know about because I have so many more than her.
I stumbled across this thread and I almost PIMP laughing so hard! I have been stamping about a year and a half and I remember when I had a "Stamping Drawer" in my dining room! I thought that was a pretty big deal and I made no bones in telling my family about it. ha ha ha! now my dining room has become my stamping room that we occasionally eat in! LOL! What a difference a year makes!
Ok, so I have yet to have gotten into scrapbooking, and for a while I told myself I would never get into. Even now I am instead starting to say "Ok, maybe I will be getting into scrapbooking eventually"...one thing at a time for me. I suppose I will get bored enough only making cards and then need to switch to scrapbooking. Though, I have some "scrapbook pages" that I put together, that are nothing more than acid free paper with pictures stuck to it, with captions written with them. I butchered a lot of the pictures, and I did it more for a place to go to them easily more than anything else. Will I actually be proud showing this? Probably not. So, I guess its time to get interested!

To funny, I have the same dinning room as you do :p Yesterday we got to eat in it and I was so proud, LOL. I joked with my DH what a nice treat he had tonight ;)
Our sons are moving into an apartment next month and DH though he was going to make their room a TV watching/internet surfing room.....hahahahahahah. You should have seen his face when I said I was hoping to make it my stamping room. He was like, WHAT!!!! I said, well how am I ever going to start classes (I am an SU! demo) if I don't have a stamping room. I really would like the stamping to start paying for itself. That is when he said it..........Use the dinning room! LOL I guess he won't mind eating in other rooms for the rest of his life
Before I knew anything about stamping and scrapbooking, a good friend of mine who was big into crafting invited me to her house with some other friends to make cards - whilst there, she told me she was totally addicted to stamps, ink and especially paper and she loved all the colors of her papers which she prominently displayed...well, I thought she was a crazy person and wondered how on earth anybody could be addicted to such strange things...I even told my husband how odd I thought she was...and how could you spend so much money on these things?
Well, 5 years on, here I am in my craft room with hundreds of stamps, hundreds of ink pads and just the biggest collection of paper that is constantly growing weekly...I am sooo addicted to papers - I've even heard myself say that out loud to people...I wonder if they think I am crazy too? :-)
A long time ago I was invited to a "Stamping Party" and my answer was NO. I am so not artistically inclined and don't have the time.;) Fast forward to present with one side of the basement dedicated to my "hobby" and who knows how many stamp sets. Just goes to show...
