Okay... I like to compare prices for stuff (in case anyone didn't know that). ;)

At clearbags.com,
  • 100 jackets that fit the A2 card but not the envelope (according to their site) is $4.00 + $7.00 small order fee + $9.61 shipping = $20.61. (Again, for 100 jackets.) Yes, the small order fee goes down if you order more.
At this eBay seller's store UniquePacking, you can get:
  • 100 jackets that also fit the envelope for $1.50 plus $4.50 shipping for a total $6.00. OR..
  • 500 for $9.99 plus $4.75 shipping for $14.74.
I think I'll be placing an order for these. (But how many do I need??) Hmmmm...

1) How do you "subscribe" to this thread? I'm not sure what that means. I think I know, but I don't know how to do it.

2) I love Stampin Up. Most of my stamps are from them. I've also written them about their rigid policy on selling their cards. I think the best thing would be for everyone to write to them to have a very lenient Angel Policy like most of the other stamping companies do. They need to come up with the times. I think they lose business because their so strict with their policy regarding selling cards with their images at fixed locations or to others for resale. What's the difference? What do you think about everyone writing them about this?

no, it applies to demos and customers.

--Because it's the copyright of the artwork on the images they want to protect use of -- it doesn't have anything to do with who's selling/buying.

The SU angel policy applies to customers and demos both. It is available on the customer side of their website. http://stampinup.com/us/enu/5293.asp

Let me clarify... can you make a card with SU! matching paper and inks and use TAC or some other company that allows it and sell them at a store? Is it just their images (would that include patterned paper?) that are under the policy or is it everything?

If you want to be a demo with a rubber stamp company where you don't have to worry about almost any restrictions on selling, TAC (the angel company) would probably be the best one to go with. You can sell stuff made with their images practically anywhere, including the internet. The founder of the company encourages it. That's why it's called the Angel company.

You can also sell handmade stuff without being a demo. There are always stamp sales on the internet going on all the time.

Does anyone here sell their handmade cards and if so, what kind of advice or warnings would you offer? I have a ton of supplies and stamps, so the start up would be minimal. I just need some advice about whether this is a good idea or not.

I thought I would throw my comments into the ring here. I sell about 100 cards a month. It definitely is a great resource for me to help support my hobby. I have mine in about 5 different retail locations....I make sure those cards DO NOT have SU images on them. It is an unfortunate reality that this decreases my desire to buy LOTS of SU images. SU has a wonderful selection, I do buy some sets. The cards with SU I reserve for sale to my family and friends. It is very wise to check out the angel policies first.....Don't be discouraged....it can be a very viable way to make some extra cash and something to do with all the cards I make! I do highly recommend a plastic sleeve. They get handled a lot and this protects them well.

There's my 2 cents....

Wow, this is some great info! My DH has been "encouraging" me to sell more cards and things if I want to continue buyin all my fun stuff. We really have no extra money right now, we have an 11 month old, I'm pregnant, my DH is in school full time and I'm quitting my job when the new little one arrives. We get by fine, God provides, but I can't get all my fun stuff, so this was so helpful!

I see SU stuff for sale at retail locations and I would never turn anyone in. I know what their policy is, it is for their benefit as a company and not mine, as a customer. I suppose you could always try to sell whatever you want and take your chances if you get caught.

I am NOT encouraging behavior that goes against the SU policy, just telling you what I see happening. I am prepared for my public flogging now.

No flogging here. ;) I totally agree with you. I'm not the stamp police, though many people seem to think they are.

SU loses a lot of business due to their non existent 'angel' policy...Think how much more $$ they would make (which is the only thing they are concerned with) if they allowed people to sell artwork made with their images? How many people would buy more stamps from SU?

I certainly would...and I know quite a few othes that would, also.

I've been selling my card creations for several years now to co-workers, friends at church, and others who request my work.
I recently raised my price to $4 per card and this has not affected my sales at all. I think you should value your time, along with the product you use to create. Don't underestimate your work by undercharging.
I package my cards with a plain envelope and enclose both inside a clear envelope with a price sticker on the backside. Most of my cards are left blank inside to encourage the giver to write a special message of their own.
I keep an assortment of cards in a nice basket ready for friends to look through when they ask.
Once in awhile I will add other papercrafting items like small journals, post-it holders, ornaments, and mini card sets to the basket for sale. It adds some variety and gives an option to those who aren't necessarily interested in just the cards.
Just some thoughts. Start small. Get the word out by selling to friends, family, co-workers (your husband's co-workers). Make a business card to include your name, address, phone number and email address to give out to let others know you make custom handmade cards. I have some customers who only buy when they have an exclusive need (special anniversary, etc) and others who will buy regularly whenever I bring my basket around.
Good luck and have fun!

Default angel policy

Just to make you aware
Some of the companys that say they are an angel company actually do have restrictions such as using their copyright stamp on the back of your card or only allowing a certain number of cards with the same image being made.
You should contact the company or go to their website to get the actual angel policy.

Question Fit and Finish of Handmade Cards

Well, I have been asked to make some cards to sell at a dance company's exhibition in the fall and I have am curious to find out what you all do for your cards' "fit and finish." How do you keep things from coming unstuck? If I am going to sell cards, I want to sell a product that can handle being stuffed in an envelope, pulled out of an envelope and stuffed back in again. What do you all do? What do you recommend?

PS, the angel policy info was great! And I love the suggestion of putting the cards into clear plastic envelopes to keep finger prints off!

Now I know I've seen people on etsy making wedding invitations out of the SU! stamps and not listing them as SU! How are they getting away with it?

I was bidding on some card fronts on ebay (I get these mainly for the examples) and the auction got closed. I thought card fronts were allowed?

They are just not getting caught. You haft to have the angel policy on the back of your card. You can sell card fronts they could of ended the auction because they didn't have no more to sell or for some other reason.

Now why can you sell card fronts? How is that any different? I thought SU did not allow items made with their stamps to be sold on the internet?

What difference is it if it's a card, wrapping paper, a candle, a bookmark or a card front?

I would buy more SU except I sell my cards and projects in stores. This really limits my uses for my SU stamps since this is against policy. I also feel it is confusing to put the SU label on the back of the card. Here I am marketing this as a hand stamped card or collage and it says SU on the back. I have researched all the stamps I use for card making. I usually call personally and talk to the owner or customer service. Many companies will let you use their stamps if you call and ask even if it says it is against policy on their website. I really have a great SU rep and would love to give her more business if I could.

I have never been told that you can't sell card fronts it is the same as selling cards as long as there angel stamp is on the back. If they are using stamps, etc. if they are just selling plain cardstock cut into cards with nothing on them,I was told this is ok. Then you need an angel policy. You can sell retired stamps, etc. on the internet, they get upset with the ones that are selling stamp sets, etc that are not retired. I hope this helps.

I've always wondered about this....so I'm somewhere and see a card with SU products....who would actually call SU and "report" them???!!! Just strikes me as funny...can't believe someone would do that AND...would they actually press charges...???!!! Get a life.....ya know???(ok...throw tomatoes at me now...I don't care)...

Question

I am also a little confused...Here is an excert from SU's Angel Policy:

Each craftwork created for sale must be personally and individually hand-stamped by the selling artist and may not be reproduced or copied in any form by any means, graphic, electronic, or mechanical, including photocopying. Mass production, assembly-line construction, production by workers for hire, or syndication of hand-stamped craftwork for sale is strictly prohibited.

So, does this mean you cannot post on SCS site or any other site any card you make with an SU stamp that you sell?

So, with Stampin' Up, can you display stamped samples in a fixed spot or a seasonal spot and take orders?

It means that you have to actually stamp each item ... you cannot scan a section, print it, and sell that.

There is no difference. If it stamped with SU! images, then it must follow the SU! Angel Policy rules. It has to be stamped with an Angel Policy stamp, or if the item is small (beaded pen), then a tag with the Angel Policy stamp has to be attached. It cannot be sold in a fixed retail location, which SU! has defined to include the internet (ebay, blogs, etc.)

As with all rules, there are people who will break them, which is why we see cards, card fronts, etc. available on the internet and elsewhere. Kind of like speed limits ... just because they're there doesn't mean everybody follows them. But if you break the rules, you run the risk of getting caught and paying some penalty (whatever it happens to be).

But you can make money selling cards and other craft items, following the rules. Or use images that have a different angel policy. (by the way, bellas and CTMH are similar if not more restrictive, I think). And of course, companies like TAC that were created for this purpose. Go with what works for you.

Well if you follow the SU Angel Policy then you cannot post any cards that you plan to sell now or in the future that you have made with SU stamps on SCS or any other website...

Am I correct?

Again here is the part of the SU Policy that I am questioning...

"Each craftwork created for sale must be personally and individually hand-stamped by the selling artist and may not be reproduced or copied in any form by any means, graphic, electronic, or mechanical, including photocopying. Mass production, assembly-line construction, production by workers for hire, or syndication of hand-stamped craftwork for sale is strictly prohibited."

I think what they mean is that you can't stamp the image, photocopy or scan the image, and then use those copies in your card creations.

I did that last year with some "scarecrow poop" treat bags that I gave out at work. I stamped the image, colored it, scanned it and then printed it out on card stock. I think I was done in less than an hour with 40 bags of candy corn. (It wasn't an SU image.)

I read the electronic part to mean that you can't sell an e-card made of a stamped image you have scanned not that you can't post a picture for gallery purposes that you may or may not later sell in some other place...

I sell my cards to companies - Like special Invitations, Christmas cards, and Thanksgiving cards. Because of the bulk amount - I usually charge between $1.75 to $3.50 per card. That all depends on how much work I have to put into it. The hard part on that type is just setting up your design and hope you don't get tired of it before you are done.

Now I have run into problems for letting them customize it and spent a lot of time "tweaking" the design. I've learned the hard way on that. I had one that I ended up doing about 6 different designs before she approved it. Next time, I'll have to allow more money on that.

I've decided to just show some designs that I don't mind doing over and over and if they customize it, then will cost them a "set-up" fee. That would be in addition to the actual card cost.

Make sure you really factor your time into the price. I just finished 22 invitations for a lady that I didn't think would take too much time or effort, so I quoted her a stupidly low price, $25. They ended up taking me close to 15 hours, plus all the supplies, which totally stinks. Not a good deal at all after all the stress it caused me. Yikes! :(
