I used to have a friend who was with Heritage Makers, so I did a few scrapbooks through them. Then I went through a long phase of not doing any scrapbooking. Now I'm ready to make some more books.
I'd appreciate any input on why MDS is so great and maybe some cost comparisons. How much do books cost when you want to have them made?

I have found MDS easy to use with a lot of online tutorials. My favorite reason though is the quality of the professional printing. My husband called it "stunning".
I like the variety available. I've been making the swatchbooks, which are smaller, fit in my purse ... and make great gifts! Even my young adult/teen kids like them!
I've had MDS since it came out and I love it although I have never used the MDS professional print service. I have a wide format inkjet printer and can design and print scrapbook pages and then just slip them into an album. One of the best features for me is that I can download DSP and print out as many sheets as I want or need. So much fun for making cards and scrapbook pages. Sorry I can't give you advice on the professional print service, but I bought it for the downloadable stamps and DSP and have no regrets.
I am finding the SU print service is quite comparable in price to other online services. And until June 15 there is a sale too. I just sent off 2 books today to SU, even though I had coupons for other print services. The price was so close that why not use the one that matches MDS colors and templates exactly. And the shipping cost is much lower than the books I have ordered from other online printers. Plus, I was able to add other MDS downloads and SU products to my order and get hostess freebies.

Can you share some that you found useful. I am determined to figure it out and make a go of it after having it on my computer unused for quite some time. Thanks in advance, Gail
So, how does the content work? Is there a base set of images and DSP that come with the software that you add to with MDS downloads, or do you have to purchase a MDS download to even get started?

The basic MDS purchase gives you the software and a TON of downloads. You don't need to purchase anything more.
That said ... once you get going, you'll want the professional printing, and more downloads because they're "perfect for what you're making", and so on. Just like papercrafting.
The entire mydigitalstudio.net site has a lot of resources. List of free downloads. Info about printing. Tutorials - both from SU! and from demos. A forum where you can ask questions (and find answers) - very MDS specific, so good that way.
So, I have one more question. Can you pre-buy books .. i.e. right now everything is on sale, but I certainly don't have anything ready to publish. Could I take advantage of the pricing now and publish later?

No you can't pre-buy. It's not one of the options. :(
I looked at the pricing guide link posted above, but I don't see any mention of how many pages/pictures you can have per book for that price. Can anyone give me that info?

I'm thinking it's 22 pages. There should be a pdf at mydigitalstudio.net with the details. Or I'll look during my lunch break.
