Just finished my first scrapbook - a gift for my niece that she can add her own pictures to. I used a relatively inexpensive book (hope that's not the problem) and the finished pages were a little too thick for the regular posts.
The book came with extenders and two thin foam strips. I took the book apart, attached the post extenders, put it back together, and there was too much space. So I tried putting one of the foam pieces over one set of posts, put everything back together, and the flap that covers the end of the post won't lie flat anymore so the book looks goofy. Am I explaining this clearly? What am I supposed to do so the book fits together nicely and still accommodates the thicker pages??? I've spent literally HOURS on this book, and can't believe I can't get it to look right!!
I went to Home Depot and bought post extenders in the fasteners aisle, maybe $2 for a pack of 3 or more. they come in all different sizes, I bought 1 1/2 inches and they are actually too long for the book I have.
Ace Hardware has lots of different sizes of extenders and they come in different types of metal (brushed nickel, copper etc...) you don't have to buy a whole package like you do at home depot or lowe's.
I'm not sure if you mean the thin strip of cover that you fit over the end of the post before you screw the end-post on won't lie flat, or if you mean the thin, flimsy material that serves as the spine of the album that you see when the album is closed and on the shelf won't lie flat. I've never had this problem with the post-bound albums I've made/used (about five of them), so I am having difficulties visualising it.
This may sound obvious, but I'm not sure if I'm understanding your dilemma. Are you putting the foam strip between pages, or between the posts and the cover? They will need to go between pages if you want to fill in the bulk, but not mess up the binding. I hope that helps!?!!?

These ideas all help. Actually, I was putting the foam over the post before folding the little flap back over (thought it wouldn't show as much if I did that). Duh! Works much better to put it between page protectors - but then it's very obvious, since this (inexpensive) scrapbook doesn't have a cover for the spine area - you see the foam strip running all the way down the length of the spine. Oh well...live and learn. Thanks for coming to my rescue, ladies! I'll have to remember the Ace/Home Depot/etc. idea for future scrapbooks!!

Yes, I know what you mean. You could take a strip of cardstock and wrap it around the bound edge of your pages (adding holes where needed) before putting them in the binding. Then the foam wouldn't show on the outside, just the inside. That might help!
