Hi all, I am hoping someone can help answer my questions about Sarah Kay.
A couple of weeks ago, I was sitting on a chair near my grandpas stove. Its old and has these plates with pictures on them that cover the heating elements. I looked at them and thought "Hey they look familiar!" I looked in the corner of the pictures and there was a small signature saying Sarah Kay. I'm like "Huh, I thought Sarah Kay was supposed to be just a stamp company," I was really confused. But I just forgot about it, thinking it was just a coincidence. :???:
Just now when I was searching for places that sell Sarah Kay stamps, I came across several colouring in sites that have printable Sarah Kay images for you to colour, free. Google "Sarah Kay" to see for yourself. Many of them are the same as the stamps. I was thinking, well whats the point of buying the stamps if I can just print them for free?
My questions are.
Is this copyright infringement?
Am I allowed to print them and use them on my cards?
Who is Sarah Kay?
I am hoping I am allowed to print them and use them.
I thought they were copyrighted. I have all the stamps and they are worth every dime. Buying stamps you support the designer... and also the company that is making them.
I also wanted to add that I believe the artist does not design solely for rubber stamp images. I believe she has been selling her art as prints, etc. since before the stamps were created of her artwork. Sort of like Thomas Kinkade. He has been selling prints, cards, calendars, etc. with his artwork long before he started allowing his artwork to be used for stamps. Does that make sense?

If the copyright owner granted permission for them to be printed in that manner, then no infringement has occurred.

I concur wholeheartedly!

'Zacly! Thomas Kinkade licensed his artwork exclusively to a rubber stamp company for that express purpose.

Sarah Kay has been around a LONG, LONG time. She began doing illustrations for her little girl and it turned into a profession. There are tons of products out there using Sarah Kay illustrations.
There are restrictions on the use of the stamped images you may make with the Sarah Kay stamps produced by Stampavie. However, I am not aware of restrictions on anything you would download for free on the internet. I know that the agreement between Sarah Kay and Stampavie does not include an angel policy allowing stamped images to be sold. However, there is obviously no restriction on personal use. Since that is the artist's wish, I would imagine the same would be true for any images that can be "legally" downloaded from the internet. But, I do not know if those sites are using the images with or without permission, so this is all speculation.
Sarah Kay is the actual artist who draws those pictures... not the stamp company. She contracted with Stampavie (a stamp company) to sell her images. I am not sure about the other site where you can download the images... if she gave her permission for use... then it's okay.. if not...well, then it's not!

Hi Lauren!
I've only just noticed your post and although it's a bit late I thought I'd reply anyway as the question is a good one and still valid today.
The sites which offer those "free-to-download" Sarah Kay images are illegal : they have no agreement for Sarah Kay images and are indeed involved in copyright infringement.
If a site has permission from an artist to offer their artwork for download free-of-charge then it will always explain the terms of that permission on their site. However this is nearly never the case, not at least on any big scale, because artists need to eat and feed their families just like you and I. Giving their work away for free is the same as any of us going to work every day and not getting paid. How many of us would do that?
In the case of Sarah Kay, the rights to her images are owned by an Australian greetings card company who in turn works with us to produce Sarah Kay stamps. There are many companies producing other Sarah Kay products, from bed linen to clothes to school bags and more.
Personally I strongly believe artists should get paid for their work, after all they work hard for many years with little income to produce their works. Downloading it for free means less and less income to them, to the point where an artist might decide to give up and that would be a tragic loss to us all.
I don't believe you can purchase directly from Stampavie but they do have a list of retailers you may purchase from: http://www.stampavie.com/stores.php
Heidi..can you provide a link to order Sarah Kay on your company site please? I would like to get some of these.
Blessings.
Hi Amber
Barb has correctly replied that we don't sell directly but instead work with retail stores, some of which are member companies of SSC, and are listed on the link she gave you.
I shall post some of my personal Sarah Kay creations to my gallery later for you to look through.
Thanks for your reply heidi. I completely agreee with artists getting paid for their work.
I never actually printed any of them, but I did buy a stamp (which I love)
Thanks x
I believe the sites that offer the line art drawings from Sarah Kay (and other artists) simply scan coloring books and post them. I've seen those coloring books.
I am totally in love with Sarah Kay images. I have several stamps and want more. However, there are lots of images that aren't stamps yet, that are in the coloring book site. I want all of her images to be stamps so I can buy them and use them over and over!!! 7KidsCollegeFund has several of her stamps.
hello, sorry for bringing this thread back from the dead, but it is the closer thing I have found about the copyrights of Sarah Kay artworks.
I tried to reach the site from stampavie but is no longer there and there is some Chinese site with nothing in English.
I'm desperately trying to find out copyright info about the Sarah Kay illustrations because I want to use them commercially and I want to be legally covered.
thanks, is she the illustrator I'm looking for however?
I don't see anything from the well know illustrations of her at those pages, those with the little boys and girls (I can't link yet to show what I mean)
