I don't have many colors of SU ribbon. (just white actually) I wanted to use a color to match the cardstock. I have seen where others have said to use you ink pad to dye it. For anyone who has done this, what do you think about it? And, will it dry or will the ink continue to rub off onto other things?
Well, it can be messy, but it works! I'd suggest investing in some surgical gloves or those craft gloves that Posh Impressions sells for $3. Yes, it will dry but it will take some time. It may help speed the process to carefully use your heat gun or a hair dryer. I just press the ribbon to the ink pad and smoosh it in with a stamp like the background stamp in Little Layers. Here's a card I did with dyed ribbon. It's too bad we don't have a dark brown grosgrain ribbon, because it would make things alot easier!
I used the dye ink to color a white organdy ribbon! It does get your hands messy so gloves are a good idea! I tried to heat set the dye though, and the organdy ribbon crinkled up! (What WAS I thinking!) the crinkled ribbon looked cool if thats the affect your going for! I thought the color turned out really well!
When I dye ribbon I like to use the reinkers and a plastic sandwich bag. Put the ribbon and a few drops of reinker in the sandwich bag and squish it around until the color is even. Sometime a spritz of water to spread the color helps. To set the color I then iron the ribbon between two sheets of paper. You have to be careful of the heat setting and how long the ribbon is exposed to the heat.
I have to say that I haven't had good luck with this. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I've dyed white grosgrain ribbon with my classic ink pads by pressing them into the ink, but the colour always rubs off onto the cardstock of the project I'm using it for-- even after I've heat set it and let it sit for a few days.
Sounds like other people have had better luck than me.
I tinted pink grosgrain ribbon by running it across a cocoa classic pad. I didn't bother with gloves, I just held it down and pressed it into the ink with a paper towel. It worked great for the look I was after (tea stain). It also took about 3 seconds to achieve. Don't know if it would work if you want a darker look, though.

I've had this problem myself Sarah....I've heat set, I've ironed, and I've even had it hanging on the clothesline in the sun and wind for a few hours with no luck...it only seems to work if I let it dry for a couple of days. I don't know what's up with that....maybe someone else can give us pointers.

One of the more recent diy segments with Shelli's daughter (who looked pregnant in it, btw) showed how to dye our ribbon with reinkers. She also showed that you can use clear EP, dip, let dry, then reheat the EP and wipe it off. If you then redip, it'll allow color on that spot but be lighter.
Maybe you're just in a humid climate? Maybe you're over saturating the ribbon? Have you tried taking off the excess ink by wiping with a paper towel? It's definitely easier just to buy the colored ribbon, but dying definitely saves money!
I use the stampin' sponges to dye my ribbon. The color may not come out as dark as using it directly on your ink pad though. Just lay the ribbon on a piece of scrap paper and apply pressure with the sponge and run the ribbon through a few times. It takes a little while to dry, but is definitely not as messy.
