Default Question About Getting Published

Do you upload your cards that you submit for publication to your gallery or blog while you're waiting to hear back if your work is chosen? I've seen several galleries that have "out for publication" placeholders where I'd assume they've taken the card off because it's going to be published. I was just wondering if it hurts your chances to have it uploaded in the first place.

Anyone have any wisdom about this?

Thanks!

I second this. The publisher of Cards magazine (and probably others) asks that once your card is selected you remove your work from any online site so that it is fresh for their readers.

I've been told that a couple months after you've submitted, any cards that aren't being published (or you just haven't heard) can be put back on your gallery.

Thanks for your responses! Another question then......about how long does it normally take to hear back if your work is going to be published? I submitted to papercrafts......I'm wondering since they prolly get tons of submissions if it will take awhile.....it's only been a few weeks.....so I wasn't expecting anything this soon...but it would be nice to know after what time period I can assume it wasn't accepted.....

As a blog reader and gallery surfer, I'd much prefer that cards that are submitted aren't made public at all. It annoys me to go to My Favorites here, and some of the cards have been removed! Same thing with a blog, I read a great post about a card, but alas, the picture isn't there. I think it's kinder to your fans to keep them offline until they're either published or rejected. I know sometimes cards are published a year or so after submissions, so this may not work 100%.

I don't know about US magazines, but I can tell you from experience that it can regularly take up to a year for the UK magazines to print a card. I once sent one to a second magazine about 4 months after submitting it to the first one - and was consequently a bit embarassed to find that it was printed in both. The only time I ever had a printing date in advance was when they did a small feature with several cards.

So far, to my knowledge, none of the card mags require "unseen" projects (unlike some of the SB magazines which do).

I do post all my work and remove it if it gets picked up.

As for Paper Crafts, if you submitted to their "send us your best work" then they don't really have deadlines. I had a card picked up that way almost 8 months after I submitted it!!

For actual calls, Paper Crafts usually lists the call back date on the call (it's typically a week or two after the deadline).

Cards magazine usually request the projects about a week after the call deadline.

I'm sorry this bothers you so much. :( I have cards that I made *months* ago that were only recenty submitted to a specific card call and thus picked up. So I had no way of knowing that they'd ever even be published at the time I uploaded them. :( However, if I am making a *brand new* project for a *current* call, I definitely hold uploading the project until a few weeks *after the call has ended*, if I haven't received a response.

As for the already uploaded projects - I'm extremely sentimental and would prefer to keep my gallery and blog comments, so I just replace the image with an OFP ("Out For Pub") sign. The policy of the publisher than I'm currently working with requires that I take anything previously seen down, and keep it down, for a minimum of 30 days *after* the issue release date. I apologize for the inconvenience, but rest assured that most OFP signs you see are only temporary and that the project will eventually return. ;)
