Default published designs

I know this is probably a dumb question, but it wouldn't be the first one I've asked. I read a lot of blogs of published designers. Do you get paid for published designs? If so, what kind of payment do you get? Money or free product. Just curious.

not a dumb question at all!

payment depends on where published. some magazines give a goodie box as well as a cash payment and others are just a copy of the publication. you need to be aware of the payment when you submit to a publication.

Glad someone asked, cause I had wondered about this, too.

Another thing to consider, some magazines pay upon acceptance and others upon publication. So, while one might buy your project right away, another could hold it for months (or years), then use it and pay after the issue is out.

If you receive a contract for an item, read it carefully and ask questions if necessary. Most contracts are the standard "you give all rights to us" type. (can you tell I work for a magazine? )
