Another thing to consider, some magazines pay upon acceptance and others upon publication. So, while one might buy your project right away, another could hold it for months (or years), then use it and pay after the issue is out.
If you receive a contract for an item, read it carefully and ask questions if necessary. Most contracts are the standard "you give all rights to us" type. (can you tell I work for a magazine?
