Default Problem with Mini Ink Pads Leaking?

Has anyone else had problems with their mini ink pads leaking and staining the label?

I have some Papertrey Ink mini ink cubes in Tim Holtz storage tins, and I went to get some ink and noticed that some of the ink cube labels were complete saturated with ink.

Has anyone else seen this?

I'm a bit type A, so it's frustrating that I can't really see the label well anymore and instead just see kind of a blob.

I had that happen with all of my Stampin' Up ink spots. The color wicked out all over the labels on the lids. I never bought them again. The only small inkpads I will buy are the VersaColor, VersaFine, and Dew Drops. If the labels hang over the edge, I won't buy them.

Happened to me with about four of my forty or so Papertrey inkpad mini cubes. Looks bad but they continue to ink OK. Two of them I reinked myself so it was my fault. I’m assuming the others were overinked by the manufacturer.

Like Scrapjanny, the only mini ink pads I ever had leak were the SU ink spots. I don't have any of Papertrey Ink mini cubes but have minis from Hero Arts, Gina K, Versafine, Versacolor, SEI, Brilliance and dew drops from Memento and Cat's Eye from Colorbox and have never had any of them leak.

Thank you folks. It sounds like the container design is flawed and that I need to cut the labels down so that they don't touch the seam where the lid meets the container.

Pain in the behind, but it will save me some heart break.

What it probably is is a tiny thread hanging off the side of the pad that gets caught in the lid and sticks outside. It becomes a wick, and the ink will leak out from the pad through that tiny thread. Keep the edges trimmed so those threads aren't hanging out, and you will cease to have problems.

JamTink, totally agree. I had exactly that happen with a couple of full size Adirondack pads a few years ago. As you say, trimmed off the thread, and all good since.

I have a ton of mini cubes—Altenew, Tim Holtz, Hero Arts, Gina K—and have only ever had a leakage problem with Papertrey Ink. Thanks for the explanation of why and how to fix!

Yes...I just found one of those today. The entire label had taken on whatever color was on the spot.

I did notice some hanging threads on most of the leaking pads, but there was one that looked perfectly trim which puzzled me.

I have seen it with some of all of the brands of mini pads I have which include SU, Papertrey Ink, Memento. Versafine is the only brand of mini pad I have which this has not happened to occasionally. But I use my mini pads exclusively and stamp very fast. I know the frayed linen wicking out is the cause, but I don't spend much time worrying about it. I have nearly 300 pads and only about 20 of them have the label discolored.

This is exactly it on mine. A thread was hanging out of all the four of the ones that leaked. Great sleuthing.
