Default Primitive Stamps???

Can anyone define, for me, what exactly the 'primitive' style is? There is a new stamp set out by Shady Tree Studio called Just Believe that they say is primitive style. What exactly does that mean?

Thanks so much.

Default primitive style

to me primitive is close to a childish style or more unrefined. i personally love that style--i use it at holloween and christmas. think of the pumpkin with the long oval mouth and rounded eyes. the figures and faces are not perfectly round, square, oval, etc. the materials look old, used, frayed, smudged, etc. search the "net" for primitive christmas and halloween. you will get a good idea of that style. i need to check out those stamps. do you have a website for them?

The new releases are all near the top of the store page here - scroll down a little for the Just Believe set.

I think a lot of people would say "country" where others say "primitive" although prim tends to be edgier rather than cutesy and I guess "country" may conjure up cutesy notions. It's easier to say what kind of images you'd expect to find rather than what the style is per se - things like salt box houses, elongated hearts, stars with unequal points (again, tend to be elongated) and maybe a button in the middle, plaid and gingham patterns and warm fuzzy textures like felt or burlap.

HTH!

I also think ofprimitive as being simple and rustic. The colors used in Primitove arw usually dArker and more muted. I loke the primitive style. Very warm and cozy.

Thanks, ladies, for all your replies. I really like the primitive style. It seems, however, that it is not too popular among stamp companies.

You might like RubberMoon's stamps. My favorites are by the artist Dave Brethauer. You can click Shop Online, then By Artist and select his name.

Thank you, Krystie Lee. I looked at them quickly and they look great. I'm going to go back, later on today, when I have time and really look at them. Thanks so much.

It refers to a "Folk Art" style!

It's an interesting question to define "primitive" and "folk" art. I don't think I can precisely.

Both are characterized by not being formally taught, simple, created by someone without formal training. Often objects are simplified and landscapes are lacking proper perspective or dimension.

Here is one of the best definitions I could find for folk art: "Art originating among the common people of a nation or region and usually reflecting their traditional culture, especially everyday or festive items produced or decorated by unschooled artists."

Folk art often involves the decoration of common household objects.

Here's a word on primitivism in art: "the style of works of self-trained artists who develop their talents in a fanciful and fresh manner, as in the paintings of Henri Rousseau and Grandma Moses. The term primitive has also been used to describe the style of early American naive painters such as Edward Hicks and has been applied to the art of the various Italian and Netherlandish schools produced prior to c.1450."

There is a naivete to primitive art -- it is generally not complex in design and proportions, etc., are subjective and dimension flattened. It's hard to describe, I just know it when I see it, LOL!

You'll often see "primitive" and "folk" mentioned in the same description as here: Primitive Folk Art Paintings Country Home Decor and here:
Primitive Folk Art by Old World Primitives

If you want to Google for the kind of primitive we're talking about here, you'll want to say "American primitive" or you will end up with more "ancient" art like cave paintings, too.

If you like this style, you might check out this site with lots of other sites listed:
Primitive Crafts | Primitive Marketplace | Country Crafts | Online Craft Mall | The Primitive Sampler

You will find lots of primitive-style decor for Halloween, too. . . it is especially creepy for some reason!!

I love prim! I wish more companies made rubber stamps in this style!

Just a few years back, my friend, Beth, launched a line called The Saltbox Studio that was released through Amuse. It didn't get nearly the attention and promotion that it deserved, IMO. You can still buy a few of the sets at the sale section of Amuse. Beth has gone back to her original passion for designing needle art, which fits right in with the primitive theme.

Occasionally, I'll see a set that looks more prim to me...Ippity, Waltzingmouse, Gina K, and CHF had a few.

I'm off to check out the one mentioned!

I LOVE Saltbox Studio -- I have *almost* all of them. I know I saw some of the first ones in someone's gallery. . . maybe it was you, Mary Rose!! (love your blog by the way!)

I'm glad to hear there's interest in primitive style stamps because I plan on revisiting it in the future!

I would categorize these more as "folk art" but if you haven't seen Plum Purdy Designs yet, you might want to check them out:

Products

Renee hasn't had any new clear stamps in a long time but the ones she has are WONDERFUL!! She does beautiful decorative painting and patterns and I hope she returns to stamp design some day!!

Thanks, Nancy! I featured a few SBS stamps on my blog just this week! It was fun being on the design team while it lasted. There are so many different styles in the stamp world, and I'd love to see more stamps that reflect my country-lovin' prim style.

Yeah, thats kind of a tough one. {ippity} has a set that I love called Simply Home that when I got it, reminded me of primitive or folky or country or whatever you want to call it. Salt Box house, weeping willow tree, farm animals, all in simplistic style. I guess its kinda like that saying about something obscene...I know it when I see it! LOL

I love that there are all types of stamps and I can use them all without getting pigeonholed into one thing.
