I guess I just don't think very hard about sentiments. I thought the stamp from Garden Whimsy was cute and it adds some great texture when used as a background. I like Cherish, Smile etc. but the one that bothered me was the one in the Mother and Child set, something about God couldn't be everywhere. Now that bothered me.

I was going to print the word bubblicious on a card with bubbles... until I discovered it's a variety of cannabis seeds (marijuana seeds). Telling someone to "have a bubblicious day" takes on a whole new meaning, and it's not about bubble gum. Good grief!
How about the word "irregardless"? No such word, but you hear it all the time!
Ooh, and the one that constantly creeps into everyday speech..."Nother". As in, "That's a whole nother tale to tell." Aaaargh! Where are Strunk and White when you really need them?
Okay I must confess I LOVE punny stamps. My husband is always using some silly pun. Stupid jokes make me laugh too. By the way I have been searching and searching for the Hoppy Birthday sentiment by itself. Anybody want to sell me theirs cheap out of the SU set?
I however hate sappy card sayings almost as much as I hate sappy forwarded e-mails.
I feel the same way, too! I'd take something punny over something sappy any day! (Like the sayings from Best of Cluck, or my multitude of sheep related sayings...can't help it, I like 'em!).
I've read through half of page one and have to subscribe to this thread!! My kindred spirits!! Grammar and spelling errors just irritate me to no end. Please, someone tell me I'm right to be irritated by this one:

Oh, I know there are others -- I'm sure I'll be nodding my head fervently as I continue to read your comments!! One reason I like making my own cards is being able to choose the sentiment and the image myself -- how many hours have I wasted at Hallmark dismissing one card after the other because it said something illogical?!
And what about this quote: "Infinite goodness has wide arms." Dante. What? I'm an intelligent person - this sounds lame to me.

I can't think of a person, situation or occasion that would warrant the use of "Embrace Life" on a greeting card. The font is too small for a scrapbook page. I love the set, but the sentiment seems a waste of rubber. I also hate it when a customer asks when you would use it...last year it was "Delight in Life". I don't get it.

Recently I found a quote online that I liked: "A bird doesn't sing because it has an answer. It sings because it has a song.". The source gave credit to Maya Angelou. So I made a card (I think I posted it here on SCS). Then, later, on anothe web-site, I see the same quote as some old proverb. I usually give credit to the author (in very small type) on my cards, but now I wonder if Maya Angelou really came up with that?! I tried to do a search on the quotation site that someone gave on this thread, but couldn't get anything to come up in the search. Oh well - I still like the quote, but won't use it on any more cards!
I have always seen this attributed to Maya Angelou... right up until I searched for it. Now I've found reference to someone named Lou Holtz?? Dang it, now I don't want to use it if there isn't a way to know for sure. Ah well, suppose I'll just cut out the originators name from all my quote stamps. Just to be on the safe side I'll stamp the name on the back, followed by a really small (I think). LOL!

Those of you that don't like sappy "friendship" stamps need the one I have here in the store I manage... "You'll always be my best friend... you know too much!"
I LOVE it!! Except the 'best' part. The idea of best friends bugs me - especially with a 7-year-old daughter. I think she thinks she's supposed to have one. She has lots of friends. Most of them have sibs though. Maybe she'll have a best friend one day, but I never have and it's too much pressure at 7!! LOL!!
I have no problem with the word "cherish". It was the name of our song when my husband and I were going together -- Cherish by The Association. I think of this every time I see the stamp.
I also don't mind the time to be happy/place to be happy quote. It's like saying be in the here and now because that's all we're really guaranteed. I guess it's all in the ear of the beholder.

Oh man I just used "embrace life" on one of my swap cards. I thought it was a good sentiment for a summer time notecard. Of course I altered my stamp by taking off the period at the end. Oh well.

I LOVE THIS, TOO! If I can't find the stamp, I will use my computer to generate the sentiment on cardstock. I have a very good friend who would TOTALLY appreciate this!

I do purchase some of these sets, then trash the dumb saying stamps. I also would not want someone else's name after a saying on the front of my cards. Some I do cut the name off if I can use the saying or a portion of the saying.
It gets expensive when you purchase a stamp set and have to trash all the word stamps. I use my computer for generating sentiments on my cards.

But does turning it around work? I mean, in the current version of the saying "Friend" is the subject right? If you said "A true friend is valuable," for example...
Now that I think about it though, it doesn't make sense to say "A true friend is YOU" then!

I agree with alot of people on this thread. I prefer straightforward practical sentiments like "happy birthday" over "birthday wishes" and 'thank you" over "thankful thoughts"... i think companies sometimes assume they have to be overly creative with their sentiments, especially SU which has been around for awhile, but i feel like the classics are the best. it's weird to me that sometimes it can be really hard to track down just the classic phrases. that's why i was so excited to see papertrey's birthday basics set a few months ago.
alot of people mentioned about "sappy" friend sentiments. some of these are sweet and i like them, but don't get much use... i tend to send more cards to family than friends, so i do not need anymore "friend" sentiments! plus if i'm sending a card to a friend it's usually for a specific occasion anyway.
however i like "cherish" and the one in the warm words set-- i love the font! i don't use it much though except for valentine's day.
We used this stamp in my class last Friday, I hesitated using those words, but told them if they wanted something else to let me know. I heard the question, "Just when would I give a card that says 'embrace life'?"
We got to giggling--for a funeral? nope, too late. During an illness--naw, not then, either.
One gal, who is always really quiet, said she has just the right person in mind for this one. On the front is 'Embrace Life'. On the inside she said she'd write, "Oh, just suck it up and deal with it! Whoever said life was gonna be all fun and games anyhow?" :lol:
This is such an interesting discussion! I guess because I was never a card *sender* before I started *making* cards, and I still don't send that many cards, I don't think that much about the sentiments! Which is goofy!!! If I'm using that Level 2 Hostess Set - the one with the "infinite goodness" sentiment, I'd probably use that sentiment because it's with the set and it "looks nice" (rolling my own eyes at my own self!). But really, that's just downright nonsensical (to me, anyway!).
I wish SU would have more Get Well stuff. And "get well" sentiments that don't really focus on getting well, since sometimes I need to send a card to someone seriously ill. Something like "hope this finds you feeling a little better" or something like that.
I guess some sentiments are better used in scrapbooking - like delight, cherish, bliss, etc. I have a picture of me nursing my oldest DD (now 28 with a nursing baby of her own) and "Bliss" would fit that picture, to me, anyhow! <G>

I am SO with you on the "Embrace Life" thing, and I was very glad to read that I am not alone! Also SU seems to be on a "BLOOM" kick! To whom shall I decree the order to BLOOM???

Besides myself and the author of Eats, Shoots & Leaves, I was beginning to think no one else cared about our language. ;) Sometimes I see such prevalant disregard of proper English usage, even, occasionally in stamps, language vigilance is discouraging.:rolleyes:
As far as silly, nonsense stamps, again, THANK YOU. I have bought them over and over but only because I thought everyone else must like them; I bought them to make cards for others to enjoy. Why else would they be so common? I think they're silly and am SO glad that I'm not the only one. I mean, "I love ewe" with a sheep was cute at first, but how many times can you use it?

I saw a cute saying the other day that I thought would make a cute sentiment. It said:
'I smile because we are sisters.....I laugh because there is nothing you can do about it.'
I have two sisters, so I thought this was cute.
I enjoyed reading this thread, and hope my spelling and grammar are correct. LOL
I saw that on a stamp in HL just the other day! It always catches my attention because it reminds me of my friend's crazy sister. I'd be using it all the time... if I had any siblings. :rolleyes:

1) Embrace Life. I have to laugh. I thought the same thing ~ why in the world would I ever use that phrase?! So, I passed the set along to one of my sisters who is just getting into stamping. As we are preparing a big party for my Dad's 90th birthday, I showed her and another sister how to make tile coasters. Lo and behold, a few days later, she calls and tells me they are putting "Embrace Life" on all of the coasters ~~ "It's the PERFECT sentiment for Dad's 90th birthday, don't you think?!" Well.... I had to laugh. I told her that, well, yes, I supposed it is!! LOL!! I even told her that when I first saw it, I had no idea when to use it! Maybe for the occasoin of the birth of a longed-for child, too? But does anyone really need to be told this? I'm not defending it ... right up there with "Bloom." Sentiments like this are just trying to hard to be different.
2) In the new catalog, the pretty pretty set Upsy Daisy: "Birthday Celebrations." ??? Are we making birthday cards to last for multiple years now? It isn't even a sentiment ~ what were they thinking? Maybe a scrapbook.
3) The sisters saying above ~ the same sister who embraced "Embrace Life" actually handmade pillows for all of us with that sentiment cross-stitched in the center. Really appropriate for us!
I guess I'm an anomoly because I 'cherish' many things in my life - people, relationships, etc. - so that IS a word I would use...in fact I like it.
I must be a sappy feeler or something because I like 'friend' stamps and I like the word 'believe'. I can taylor a card to what I'm referring to as in what I hope the person believes - whether it be in themselves or in the future or ...
I guess they make sentiments like that for people like me. I also like words like 'home', 'family', 'faith' ... I really liked the 'think big' set from last winter's mini from SU.
I feel the same way. I cherish so much in my life. I find it very appropriate for baby cards, wedding cards, sympathy cards, anniversary cards, friendship cards.. It just reminds me not to take things for granted.
I like the friend stamps too. I would send any of them to my friends-- they mean a lot to me.
I also can pretty much tailor about anything to any situation.
But this is coming from someone who cries at Hallmark commercials... lol

I can't think of a card, and I can't think of a scrapbook page where I would use it. I have sheets of stickers where that is the only thing left on it, because I don't know what to do with it.

Infinite Goodness has wide arms....Dante. I just got this set recently. Could Infinite Goodness be God? In that case, I think this saying is appropriate for a sympathy card, get well, or other such occasions. I would then say something personal inside the card referring to God's infinite goodness.
Cherish--I use this quite a bit on anniversary cards or wedding cards. Would be great for a baby card too!
Delight in Life--what about for a birthday card? I love that set!
I do admit...I don't like some of the more sappy sayings...Dare to be Fabulous, Embrace Life, You make my life a beautiful thing, you mean everything to me, etc. Too sappy for me!
I use my hello stamps quite a bit, but I make cards to send to people who are new at our church.
I'm always on the lookout for sentiment stamps that are my style!

This was one of the most interesting threads I've read yet. It's interesting to see how different we all are. When I first read the first few threads I felt like some people were just agreeing with others and trying not to disagree. I couldn't BELIEVE how many people didn't like the word Cherish or couldn't think of reasons or ways to use it.
I asked myself... Are they serious? What began as a question on sentiments made its way to XMAS vs. Christmas.

I guess you have to either like that kind of stuff or you don't. It's like I wouldn't have even thought there could be so many views on the same sentiments. I really liked this thread. It got me to thinking....that's where the words strange, weird, crazy, fabulous, beautiful, unique, all come from. Someone's thought at that moment. They were striving to be CREATIVE, SPECIAL..DIFFERENT
and to think all these words made it into the dictionary and are given a definition(meaning). as all the sentiments found a home on stamps, rub on, cards, scrapbooks, THIS THREAD, and into the hearts and minds of others.
Wow is all I can say because it was really fun reading them all. I will CHERISH
this post because it taught me that you really do learn something new every day.
And in the end it all boils down to WHAT FLOATS YOUR BOAT.

I love the pictures of the Pun Fun and Very Punny stamps but hate the one liners. Kind of cheesey. Good for maybe a kiddy card. I didn't want to do away with the words completely in case i was in a cheesey mood so I just mounted them on the side.
I would love to have a hello stamp, as I send quite a few cards for no reason other than to say hello. Seinfeld had his "show about nothing," and I have my "cards about nothing."
As for follow your bliss, I think you could use it for a graduation, retirement, or any other situation where you want to encourage someone to do what makes them happy.
I also agree about Happy Birthday. I'm not a big fan of variants like Celebrate You, Wish Big, etc. I would love it if every stamp set came with a simple Happy Birthday and Thank You in a font that coodinates with the stamp images.
SU has a habit of sticking a sentiment in a set that I know will never see ink! The one that used to send me over the top was "When it is dark enough, you can see the stars". What the heck is that supposed to mean? Is that the equivalent of "When you hit rock bottom, at least you've got no where to go but up"? Who would you send that message to?
I know this post is from a while back but I absolutetly LOVE this saying! What set is that in?
