omg!!! this is funny to read! i started stamping about 9 years ago and i think i have at least tried all of these "trends".
the tearing edge ruler....never thought that was a good idea since i could tear things quite well myself.
mulberry paper....i used it but i always thought it looked kinda funny
fun fur....wth???
liquid applique.... had to have but could never get it to look right
eyelets...were all the rage. still have tons that i don't think i will ever use. love the paper popper though!!
non su white cardstock....SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! so does any non su cardstock!!
gluesticks....WAY too messy and they dry out
fibers....SOME still look ok, depending on the card
magic mesh.....again, WTH??
rafia....i was just too cheap to buy ribbon!!! yuck! (and i just found a whole bag of it in the basement!!)
staples.....just look totally tacky!
rub-ons....what are we, like 4??? i just can't get into them! i also would like to have the stamp i can use over and over!
color spritzer...i used it when i first started....the project took like 4 hours!! enough said!
deco scissors....WOW!!!! i feel like a dinosaur! i had about 12 pairs...i really need to get rid of that box!!!
how about the XYRON?? what can i say.....YIKES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this one is newer and some still do it....
sewing on cards.....why??? are we stamping or making clothes? i'm not a fan!
i hope i could make someone laugh...or at least chuckle!!! no offense intended to anyone!!! we all have our likes and dislikes. that's what makes us unique!!!
non su white cardstock....SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! so does any non su cardstock!!
Have you tried Gina K's Pure Luxury white? AMAZING paper. It makes whisper white feel like whimpy white! It's way more thick than SU!, but still has that really smooth/slightly glossy feel. It takes Copic ink beautifully, unlike WW.
PaperTrey's cardstock is also a lot thicker than SU!s. It makes much nicer card bases, imo.

Ah but don't try to fix the old scrapbooks---leave them because when you change them to what's in now in a few years it will no longer be in. I have scrapbooks with pictures in shapes, lots of stickers and all the rest but will not ever change them. Funny thing is that a lot of thinks others think are no longer trendy I use it all the time---and I'm okay with that!
When i first started scrapbooking i was 14 living in a very small town...I had colored paperl, stencils, and glue sticks...and went to the local grocery store to get stickers....all they had was 90210 stickers and some glittery worms...I had a few pages with the glittery works but I did not buy the 90210 stickers.
I then got the bright idea to trace all my photos with my stencils and then cut them out with my new decorative scissors...I am kicking myself now! I have redone most of it but so of the Star shapped pictures that do not show much of anything still look a little strange!
Oh heck....they still sell all this stuff down here in New Zealand, yikes, still, hopefully if everyone doesn't know any better they won't know how outa date I am! LOL - never have used my decorative edged scissors but I use mulberry paper & my tearing tool all the time and I still use eyelets & brads, not the funky weird shapes tho' and as for those fibres, well lets just say I could use them to escape from a second storey window! Will we look back in 5 years at our nestabilities like this? Grief I hope not I've spent a small fortune on those. Thanks for the laugh ladies, night, night, *grin* Bev.

I am hooked on SU!'s textured paper, though!
Oh I'm with ya on that one!! PTI's cardstock really does rock! So sturdy and fab for using different colouring mediums on.
I've not tried Gina K's Pure Luxury white - but have heard only good things about it!
This thread has had me in stiches LOL!!! I can confess that I still own a HUGE amount of decorative scissors, funky foam (I now use that as a base to use my acrylic stamps on!) and peels offs *Blurgh!* But it all comes in handy when my niece stops by to play:-D!
For all of you with decorative scissors laying around--donate them to an elementary school! I brought all of mine to my classroom for my 2nd graders to use. They LOVE them! Of course I don't allow them to use them on every project...
I loved this thread and since I was scrapbooking 13 years ago, I participated in most of them. Since there wasn't a lss anywhere and I was a CM consultant I have many albums filled with pictures cropped into shapes and Mrs. Grossman's stickers. There's no way I'm ever going to redo those albums! I have way too much new stuff to scrapbook and my kids love their albums even if their heads look lopsided because I silhouetted the pictures badly, or they are partially hidden by a tag that is swinging from the page with some funky fibers. They especially like all the paper dolls that I painstakenly dressed with papers to look just like them! Yep-I loved my paper dolls, it was like Project Runway with paper! Really my kids still think they're cool...at least that's what they tell me.

I'm a big fan of Paper Tray's white CS. I will use SU for images but not as a base. I've heard all good about Gina K, too. AND, I Love all of the other SU cardstock and designer papers! Even tho it drives me nuts that I have to pick a side to use and a side to 'waste'!!! LOL
Hmm, stuff I had to have when it came out. Slide mounts in all the colors. Fibres--mine always looked liked crap when I used them myself. Bottle caps and then I spent a small fortune on some cute designs to glue on them from ebay. Those cute little people that we paper pieced together. I still have my hockey haze that will ocassionally make it on a card for a player. All the patterned paper from the early days.
My first scrapbooks done still bring me joy. I remember how passionate I was about scrapping and those memories are still there for me when I look back. I would not change those pages for anything.
Lorri
I totally agree with you! It reminds me of when I was a kid, looking through the photo albums and laughing at old clothes and hairstyles. To me, half the fun of looking back is remembering what used to be, and laughing anyways!
This thread is fun! The fun fur thing: I NEVER used it on a card or a layout.
However I think I knit 15 or 20 (or more) scarves with it! I even (shudder) knit a baby sweater with it for a friend's daughter. (and yes, she's still speaking to me!)
I still like eyelets. I prefer them with ribbon tied through, like on the top of a tag.
Me, too! I still buy and use gobs of 'em! I like the 3/8" ones, too, for bag handles! ;)
I also still use mulberry paper ever since I found a really cool, sophisticated way to use it!
And, whoever's worried about Nesties goin' out, I don't think you need to fear as long as the shapes are classic--basic geometrics and timeless scallops never seem to lose luster, cuz they're classics, UKWIM?!
At least, that's what I'm telling myself, cuz I never intend to quit using them. Like my classic style deco scissors. heh, heh, heh!

I have to say that there are a bunch of themed-brads that are still sitting in my embellie box...you know, beer mugs, baby dresses, dog bones, snow hats....about the only brads I ever use now are silver, black, maybe a red one for a cherry now and then! And along the lines of fun fur...fun flock...in emerald green?! I think I bought it at St. Patrick's time...maybe to make the "beer" in my "beer mug brad" green?!
Well, I've only been scrapbooking for about 2+ years, and card making about 2 years.
I have tons and tons of stuff that I use for both!
I love stickers for scrapbooking!
I love cards with torn edges!
I love Mulberry paper for cards!
I still use Fun fiber on some cards!
I love using embellishments on cards!
( I just add a piece of plain cardstock for mailing)
I have colored staples, but hardly use them. (My ugliest card ever was full of staples!!)
I guess I'm out of touch!!

I just dug out my first scrapbook from 12 years ago
I have participated in most of these trends. When I started scrapbboking, supplies and resources were limited, nothing like what we have now.
PICTURES CUT INTO SHAPES ( I thought I was brilliant )
FUN FUR..... I have a few layouts with this ( I think it looks okay, I didnt go overboard ) I never used it on cards though.
Never used or liked glue sticks, Yuck ! reminded me of kindergarten and having to use them on contruction paper ....Double Yuck !
I will admit that I still like to use staples, buttons, and sewing on my cards & layouts.
Those paper dolls were just weird ! I never did get that trend.
I used to use eyelets on everything I made, Not so much anymore, just here & there. But I still have my stash, even those " gut Shot " animals:mrgreen: I use more brads now.
What about using red line tape with seed beads on it ? Was that ever a trend ? I have several layouts with that on them.
Stickers, I admit I used them 12 years ago, but I never really liked them and was glad when I finally decided to let them go on to a better home.
Take three of the things listed above and make a card, then post it! I think it would be fun!
I'll play! Maybe you could start a new thread with a list of the item choices in one post for people to see and link their cards in and link to this one for reference??
Titles on scrapbook pages - I can count on one hand the pages that have a title other than the first line of my journaling box/area (i.e. Christmas 2008 - Christmas morning) stuff- does one REALLY need to title their pages "snow cute" and other such things? Or the ones like the one word things like "imagine" or what have you, that are very popular.
May be for some but not for me. I just don't understand the need of the trend of having to title your scrapbook layouts.
I also never liked staples. Too many years working in an office, not so attractive to see it holding something together on my works of art! Brads or eyelets, yes, staples no.
Bottlecaps also escaped me.
I still love my decorative scissors though. I just don't cut photos or photo matting with them though, unless it is a scalloped edge. I use a lot of them for making cards though, I refuse to get rid of them when they are so useful - grass cutting edged ones for making a strip of grass for cards; postage look for making a square look like a postage stamp; they are endless and well underused and overlooked, I think! Not to mention how funny it is that now everyone wants scallop edged scissors now or did recently since that was the "in" edging to have.
Totally with ya' on that one. I bought one roll and I don't think I *ever* used it--it just always looked totally WEIRD to me on a card. OK, pretty much anything. It's basically drywall tape, right?

rafia....i was just too cheap to buy ribbon!!! yuck! (and i just found a whole bag of it in the basement!!)
OK, I'll 'fess: I still like and use raffia--it just depends on the look I'm going for!!!

Same for staples. I like 'em on cards that feature office themed images and embellishments . . .

Even tho they've come a long way baby, I must admit I'm still "anti" rub-ons. . . much rather have a stamp for repeated use.

I'm just too LAZY. :p

Don't go back and "redo" your scrapbook pages!!! Please! Does a painter go back and redo his earlier paintings after he has practiced his craft for several years and can paint much better!!?? NO!
Those pages are as much a part of your history as the photos and events that you scapbooked. You have just developed in your abilities and have a record of where you started. It is also for others to see and notice how good you are getting! Twenty years from now you will look at todays work and feel the same way about those pages as you do about the older ones now. As a life long crafter, I can tell you that I have made some really crappy stuff in my life that at the time I thought it was terrific! But it also shows me how far I have advanced. Not only in the quality of the work but in the style.

This is a fun thread! For me, it's wire - bought a bunch and never used it, fortunately I sold it at a garage sale. Also the decorative scissors - now relegated to my 5 yo using them (he thinks they're great!). What about stamping on velvet? I think you were supposed to put the stamp on the back side of the velvet, and then hold an iron to it to impress the image on the right side? I recently found a package of "velvet paper" for that.
Staples: Check
Dew Drops: Check (just discovered them)
Titles on scrapbooks: Check
conversation bubbles: Check (I have a quickutz die for them... oh another check there)Here is a card I made completely with quickuts and I LOVE it Welcome Baby by austamper at Splitcoaststampers
I'm definitely not a trendy scrapper or stamper. I don't think dew drops or titles on scrapbook pages are old and silly trends. I think they are pretty current. And I still use many of the things mentioned in previous posts. Anyway, I don't use or do things because they are "trendy." If I like them, I use them. The only things I don't really use anymore, because I'm either tired of them or I never liked them much to begin with, are: fibers, lettering templates, paper dolls, staples, tags (except on gifts), slide mounts, "vintage" embellishments/colors, and probably a few other things that I've forgotten about. Different strokes for different folks. ;)
Everyone has their own taste and their own style. My husband bought me a sewing machine so I could "sew" on my paper. I was excited to use it. It should not be rocket science to thread a sewing machine, however, to me it was. After trying over and over I had to sell the machine before I threw it out the window.
I did start using eyelets again one the Crop-A-Dial came out. It makes it so much easier.

Bravo. My thoughts, exactly.
A few years ago, when people were talkin' smack about deco scissors, I put mine away. Then I realized I missed a few of them (scallops, pinking, stamp, clouds) and thought, huh, thirty years from now, my grandkids aren't going to know that these weren't "trendy," nor will anyone I send cards to regularly. Now they sit out on my desk in a really cool hand-made pottery goblet, ready and waiting.

Susan, I'll let you in on a little secret. I just bought a pair of large scallop-edged scissors because I can't find a border punch with large scallops, and that corner rounder scalloping technique doesn't turn out quite right for me.;) I still use my scalloped and pinking scissors, and sometimes the wavy-edged ones.
I have a stash of eyelets that I inherited from my SIL, she sold all of her stamping stuff on the Bay and gave me what she didn't/couldn't sell, so I have plenty of eyelets that go unused.
I also have the Crop-A-Dile, thinking I'd use it for my eyelets. Since I don't use eyelets on my cards much, that's sitting unused.
Two pairs of scissors with designer edges. Once the scalloped punches came out, I had no need for those scissors. I'd rather punch.
Nestabilities. I could never get the hang of using those in my 'bug, so I sold them last year.
