Ok, I have to admit there are several stamped/papercraft items that leave me cold. These include:
ATCs - what's the point?
Altered books - what's the point? Plus it's a dreadful waste of a book!
Paint Cans - what are THEY all about? Paint cans are for paint, surely????
But I've just made a major u-turn on the paint cans! I've just 'inherited' a blank paint can from a friend who rescued it from her daughter's bin (garbage) (it was a Christmas gift with toiletries in) and she told me to get inspired and use it as a practice model. I've just scoured the gallery for ideas and now I can't wait to get started!!! Thanks for the inspiration, paint-canners!
My only worry is that it's a BIG paint can so it's a bit daunting - will my paper go round it or will I have to cover an ugly join? Going to find out...
(You can still keep your ATCs and altered books, though ;) )
I think you can get quart and pint-size cans also. I've not taken the plunge yet but my DH's birthday is in February and I want to try it. I better get busy though.
Artists Trading Card. Some are very beautiful. I have not done them simply because my idea would be to trade with other people at a stampers convention. Since I'm not going to any conventions... [what she said] "What's the point?"
I'm with you sistu on the ATC's and the Altered Books, etc. I think they're lovely to look at (okay, some aren't) but...WHAT THE??? I just made my first paint can for my DH for Christmas. He's just getting into golfing, so made him a Golfer's Survival Kit. He's not much into my 'craft', but he though it was cute. With the big can....just gonna have to BIG stuff in it. Good Luck and don't forget to post your creation!!!
I love ATCs! Just to have a little piece of art from other stampers is great. I keep them in baseball card sheets in a binder and I love to look at them for ideas and inspiration.

I feel the same way, except I'm not into paint cans yet. But I did have the same u-turn with lunchboxes. But I just got a couple with ideas in mind and I think having the idea is what got me psyched about them. Good luck with your paint can -- please post it when you're done
I'm another on the "huh" side of the fence. I can see the point of paint cans as they are gift boxes for something else and I have a z Becky Brown so I can carry my designs around with all my essential tools inside it for crops and demos.
But ATCs, altered books, they're done, then what? You don't display them, you don't really give them to anybody. I know you swap them with other ATC artists, but they have no purpose really.
I also don't get altered dominoes, unless they are for jewellery. You paint them, they are really fiddly, then what?
I just made an altered clipboard. But, I just painted and stamped. I made it for my goddaughter. She just turned 16, I give my dgc 16 presents for their birthday, and she loves office supplies. So, that was a perfect thing for her.
I kind of like the altered books if you make pockets inside. I've been considering this for the goddaughters actually. I want to glue some pages together, etc. and add pockets labeled for ticket stubs, photos, etc.
And, while I too didn't get the paint cans, I'm starting to think of getting some for end of year teachers' gifts. In fact, I keep forgetting to go to Lowes for empty cans. Maybe I'll do that today.
put me down for the 'I don't get it' on the following items: dominoes, ATC, and altoid tins. The altered books and journals, while cute - seem like a lot of work when I can get some really cute ones ready to give for very inexpensively.
Art is intended to provoke an emotion from a total stranger. If youve succeeded in this, consider yourself an artist. Paper Shanks Blog. Love me or hate me, you are still talking about me
I laughed when I read the original post on this and I thought Wow I have always felt the same way. If I am going to the trouble of an ATC I would do a card that could be used anyway. Altered books, clipboards, dominos, altoid tins ? Different strokes thing I guess. I like to look at what others have done. Some very talented people on here that is for sure.

I have an issue with the paper bag albums. It kills me to think that someone's precious pictures will be surrounded by all of that acid. (Unless I am wrong and the bags are acid free, or the pics don't touch the bag.)

Not quite creative
Hmmm, I think I can add paper bag albums to my "I don't get it" list, too! Not for the same reason as you - I hadn't even thought of that - but because I imagine they just look like a load of paper bags! Of course, I could be wrong - I've never seen one in real life.

I also think for us in the UK paper bag albums are a particular "huh" because we do not get our groceries in brown paper bags, so we actually have to go out and BUY brown paper bags to make an album. If we are gonna have to pay for it, we might as well get decent paper.
I'm a scrapbooker who loves mini-books (not paper bag albums though for all of the above-mentioned reasons), so the Altoid tin concept appeals to me because I've made small accordian albums that mount inside of small boxes before. However, all the work getting sandpaper, special paint, etc. isn't cool for me!
The one that really got me scratching my head a few weeks back was the juice box/cat food pouch creations. Who in their right mind would want to make one or receive one, for that matter?
In the same vein, a lot of the diecut boxes that SU sells are so infinitessimally small, I can't think of anything to actually use it for! Sometimes I'll see a sample in the catalog of a diecut box and say "Cute! But who really wants a little box of birdseed, other than a bird?" Now if they made boxes to fit cd's or dvd's, then we'd really be talking about something useful!

I did a quick search in the gallery for "juice", "juice box" and "cat food" and couldn't find anything...could you post a link to an example?

Another good point! I was just surfing the net looking for a scrapbook album and happened upon paper bags - 69p for 10. Cheap enough, but still! I wasn't tempted. :???:

I was wondering if anyone had made a CD or DVD box....that would be a great idea!!! You should send them the idea if you haven't already!
The juice box thingy I'm referring to is a group that makes little purses out of Capri Sun juice pouches and cat food pouches. Not sure if there are examples in this gallery, but I bet if you Googled it you'd find them.
Very interesting about the juice pouch purses. I found a very creative and talented person's website where they are selling the purses and other things. It's kind of in the same category as duct tape purses, wallets, etc. for me.
I've been working on an altered book for a couple of years now - I used an old accounting book from school, so no waste there since it's outdated and now it's not going into a landfill. Man is it fun - it's just art for art's sake. What I'll do with it when it's done, I have no idea, but it is fun to work on - very freeing.
I like to hit the library sales and have a small collection of outdated encyclopedias for the next project. I know if they don't sell, a lot of books get thrown out, so why not try one?
ROTFLMBO!!!!!! ;) I haven't read all the responses to this thread, but . . .
I hafta admit, I don't "get" the Altered Book craze nor the ATC craze.
As you said: Exactly what is the point?????
Not said with intent to offend!!!! I'm sure there must be one, or maybe there isn't one, but in either event, I just don't get it . . .but, that's OK! To each his own, as long as it makes 'em happy creating them!
Paint Cans I am sold on, however--they serve a "utilitarian" purpose: can be used for storage, for gift presentation, etc.

I have never done any of those things either. I'm not really even big on the boxes that you can make out of cardstock. However, we can buy cards fairly inexpensively too. I think it is as much a creative outlet as anything else. While I don't get altered books, I guess for some people, they are their creative outlet. (When I started this hobby, I thought I could make cheap cards. Hahaha.)

Some books were dreadful waste the moment they were published!! Those are the ones that I try to use...

Can't speak for everyone, but mine are intended to be purely artistic - altered art wall hangings. Except the new ones that I'm currently doing - they're functional so I didn't load them up with ephemera crap...
Now as far as the ATCs go: so many of us demos/former demos take for granted card swaps at every function we attend. Why do we trade? For ideas, for notoriety, to collect art we don't have...*lots* of reasons! Well why is that any different from those who attend trade and/or publisher-sponsored functions who may or may not affiliated with any specific company?
The entire concept behind ATCs is *exactly* what the name implies: Artist Trading Cards...different artists do them so that when they attend "open" functions, they have something to trade with and collect. Also: men have *long* traded baseball cards; kids trade character cards. Now women can get in on the "card trading" thing with ATCs...and it isn't limited to stampers and scrappers, either. There are even ATCs for bead artists, fiber artists, and even glass artists. For me to comment on "...getting..." them or not would be pointless--those are not *my* hobbies of choice, so while visually interesting, they should not be for me to understand!
ATCs are becoming more popular as "outsiders" get in on the swapping craze. Since there are so many demos (from *every* company) attending "open" events and publisher-sponsored functions, it is becoming a great forum for many of us to use non-company-specific items to create and trade our art. The size is "baseball card" size to keep costs down - both in terms of paper and embellishments. Not to mention: it's easier to crank out tons of ATCs than it is to crank out tons of cards...

Just thought you'd like to know that I've finally finished my first paint can and I've uploaded it to the gallery (still pending). Gallery at Splitcoaststampers
I made it for a member of our stamping group who has just had a baby boy. Between us, the group bought her an 8x8 album and scrapbooking supplies, which we put inside the can. I think she liked it!
I, too, look for practical purpose of things I make (or attempt to). I love the paint cans to give away for baby showers mostly. And for some reason, they can never be too big for me. I mean I use the gallon size and I still run out of room to put goodies in! And the lunch tins...oh those are so just darn cute!
Did you find paper to go all the way around the can or does it have a seam? The link isn't working right now. Do you use modgepodge or sticky strip?
I had to have a seam on the background paper. For the wheeled strip, I was lucky enough to find a very long piece of cs which went all the way round. I used double-sided tape - I use it for everything!
I Love double sided tape too. The link finally worked-it looks great! I'm ready to start one for my daughter's baptism. ( Everyone in the family will put notes inside it.) I think the one in the catalog is adorable too.
I've thought about making an altered paint can, but what I don't get is if you use it as a gift and put the lid on, how is the recipient supposed to open it? Do they have to go get a screwdriver to pry open the can???
