I believe the 13W Ott light is the Flourescent version and is equivalent to something like a 60W regular bulb so yeah, it should be good. The reviews on Amazon are all good - 4 and 5 stars.
I have a 13 watt and it seems to be very pale. I use it to help distinguish colors and it's great for that. But for pure illumination, not so much. The lamp actually creates a shadow from the overhead light and the Ott light just isn't strong enough to offset the shadow. I've been wondering if something is wrong with mine.
I had just a 13W for years, and then a few years ago got a 21W. What a difference! I love it! Then, I ran into a great deal on a pair of 27W lamps. I would definitely recommend the 21W at the least, if it's in the budget. The 13W is adequate if you're right next to it, but I've found I like a bigger and brighter area of light.

I wondered about that, and keep talking myself out of the 21w. Thanks for sharing your experiences, Betsy!

Thanks for the info, ladies, as I'm looking into buying one for me. Is Joann's the cheapest place to buy these?

sorry to hijack but you guys might be able to advice me,I was wondering as OTT lights are so expensive would a 'Daylight blub' in a regular lamp do the good enough job?
The only daylight bulb I've tried (a "true color" type bulb) totally underwhelmed me, lol. That said, Ott is not the only good brand, just the most expensive. My bigger lamps are all non-Ott and do just fine. So don't be afraid of finding a deal outside of normal "craft" channels.
thank you! I will do a bit more research and see if I can come with a more cost effective method...failing that...make sure I do all my colour matches during the day rather then at night...
I recently found an Ott Light bulb at Lowe's and use it in the clamp light I already had on my stamp table. It seems to do a nice lighting job and makes the colors look natural.

I have a 13 watt Ott and felt that I needed more light so I bought the 24 watt HD Natural light (Ott also) and love it. The difference in the light is amazing. The one that I have can be used as a desk lamp or floor lamp and it has a large clip and magnifying glass on it. I wanted the magnifying glass for beading. I purchased from JoAnns when they had them 50% off a few of weeks ago.
I have the 13w - I have been using it for studying late into the night - all the other bulbs seemed to have "sleepy lighting" with a yellow cast, making me want to go to sleep rather than study. I haven't tried it for any use beyond this yet, but if any students read this thread I highly recommend it for studying at night!
Here's another Two Cents: I had investigated the Ott lights because everyone here liked them. I was bothered by how expensive they were, even on sale.
I'm not a name brand person, and always try to find an inexpensive substitute that will work as well for me, no matter what the item is.
I found a wonderful floor model Daylight lamp with an adjustable gooseneck at Big Lots. It came with two 27-watt bulbs, and only cost $29.00. I have been very pleased with it.
Don't think that you must have an Ott to have good light to craft by.

I'm a scrapbooker and a card maker. I originally had one 13W OTT light (got it 'free' with a magazine subscription) and I found it terrific for selecting colour combinations at night as it does give good 'daylight' light. My only problem is that I find the area of light too small for scrapbooking but it's OK for my cardmaking. I've since received another 13W OTT light and I find I need them both on for when I'm scrapbooking at night to get adequate true 'daylight' light.
If you work at night, the OTT lights are certainly great for helping with accurate colour selection. I've also been very impressed with how long the bulb has lasted. I've been using my original light for nearly two years and it's still on the original bulb.
If I was starting all over again, I would buy the largest size from the beginning. I did try the 'blue' bulb in a normal lamp first, but I didn't find it to be a good substitute for the OTT light. Good luck with your search.
There's a no name lamp for $20 at Ollie's Bargain Outlets here. It's made in China and has no other identifiers. While I will buy lots of non-brand items, electrical items make me nervous.
I bought it when i was making jewelry (still do sometimes); it was good for close up jewelry work. I find it is nice to have the magnifying lens for close up work on cards too.
