Default Online selling platforms

Open question to anyone who uses Big Commerce, Squarespace, Shopify, etc.: which one do you use and why? My husband is doing a lot of woodworking projects in his retirement and is looking to start selling online. I'm helping him with some research, lol. Thanks in advance for any input!

Hi Sue, really just saying hi and how are things going? I don't have any ideas for Greg along the lines you're looking for, but I will suggest Etsy. Certain things really do seem to move there. I'll bet if he worked on some helpful stamping items, they'd be a hit. You could offer them here as well.

I recently noticed someone in the LV area looking for some stampers in the area and, of course, I thought of you. She hasn't replied to my comment in her post, but I'll bet if you PMd her, she'd respond. We are still stamping like mad around here.

Hope all is well.

Linda! Helloooo! Thanks for chiming in - I went and responded to Lizzie's thread and sent her a pm - thank you. I still miss the Stamp Cellar...

We've considered Etsy, but the fees seem to just keep getting higher and higher, so we're considering other alternatives, as well. I keep telling Greg that he should make file cabinets for 12" paper - everyone seems to look for them to no avail. He's afraid shipping would be prohibitive, but we'll see...

Sue, we have received a couple of shipments of heavy items through a company called DHL. It might be worth checking into for your husband’s woodworking.

Thanks for the suggestion! Most of his stuff is on the smaller side but he does have a few larger items - worth checking out!

Omg! I would want one of those file cabinets but yes...I expect the shipping would prob be as much as the piece...darn I wish I lived close by. But if there were a stamp convention near you and he could show a few different color ones....he might get orders for locals.

Unfortunately the platforms have the benefit of an audience. And there will always be costs to doing business. At least in his case he wont have a warehouse and employees...so just those fees might a "bargain"?

Googling "selling handmade things platform"...I got tik tok (who knew?) Michaels, Walmart-who claims to have 9 fees...here is a list. The thing is, what a card maker uses could be different from wood and furniture stuff....I am just tossing names for you. Looks some research is in your futures.

I am thinking about this myself but so far feel very overwhelmed by choices and decisions.

My son has an online business and sells parts for restoring old vans from the 60s & 70s. He does all of his business through an Instagram page he specifically set up for it and always has a lot of hashtags on it for more visibility. He also travels to swap meets up and down the state (CA) in the spring/summer and actually does quite well. If it's something he needs to ship, he typically gets the prices from a couple different shippers and lets the buyer decide which to use. He's shipped all over the US and even to Australia! (who knew vintage vans were popular there?!). Hope this helps and good luck!
