Hi everyone! I am currently setting up my online store and the biggest issue is figuring out what to charge for shipping. If I want to protect my items in bubble wrap envies, my P.O. charges $1.39 shipping. That's a big charge for say a clip bookmark.
Also, things like card sets in clear boxes would have to be shipped in boxes so they don't get crushed. That's makes the shipping price jump quite a bit. What do you do with items like that?
Good luck in figuring it out. It took me forever to get it right and no matter what you decide someone is going to complain about it. I ended up taking too many hits on shipping cost so I decided to just stop doing a business the deals with that. It wasn't worth it. Sorry not much help :(
I would love to hear replies too and find out as I am planning on opening up an etsy store. I have been reading on the etsy forum and some people offer free and add it to the price but thats hard to do when its on a handmade card, there is only so much you can charge! I am in Canada and it seems like its going to cost $4 to ship one card that does not fit through their slot of doom thing! I hope some more people reply with ideas, I would really appreciate it!

Haha I know I love it too, makes me laugh, I have not experiened it yet as I just moved here but going by what other people call it! Apparently there is a curve of doom and a ruler of doom too!
I ship alot of small items in my Etsy shop (cards, soldered pendants, etc) and I charge $2.50 for shipping (a little extra for additional items) I put all items in a clear envelope (with a pretty postcard with my info on it), sandwich that between two pieces of cardboard and then put that into a small padded envelope, my actual cost for shipping is around $1.40-$1.60, the extra cost covers packing materials, etc. I've never had anyone complain about my shipping costs.
Larger items are more troublesome, it just simply depends on the weight, nowadays it's hard for anything that's not really small and light weight to be anything but priority so at least $5 to ship those.
Hope that helps
I dont really build much in for shipping..often times I just take a small loss. Somehow I still make a little bit to help with the postage for the cards I send to the troops.
blessings.
