Duplicates are just proof that you really, really like that color/die/folder
Besides, buying a new one is the very best way to find the one that you know you already own, but can't find. As soon as you toss the packaging and return receipt for the new one, the missing one magically appears.
I'm not sure of an app but on my phone there is a Notes section that I make a list of what I have by inks or stamp sets or whatever. I keep the list in alphabetical order so I can find it easily.
Evernote is used by a lot of people to track stamps, embossing folders and anything else you can think of. A couple of other apps I use are My Markers and the Tim Holtz app. My Markers has Copics, Prismacolor pencils and lots more and is easier than Evernote in that you can just click on the ones you have. Same with the Tim Holtz app, it lists everything of his.
And I don't think it's old age, just too much great stuff out there.
I set up a couple of boards on Pinterest for Embossing Folders, Dies and Stamps and then I am able to use my phone to check my stash for duplicates when I am in the store or at a garage sale, etc.
I love Lydias answer! I purchase duplicates of dies way more than I want to confess. Fortunately I have many card making friends I can gift the duplicates to!
Blessings
A user and lover of Evernote here. Very intuitive; syncs with your phone, tablet, laptop, etc. and best of all, it's free.
I not only have a list of all my stamp sets, I have web shots of them. A complete list of all my Copics, dies, books. Another favorite thing: I find a recipe online that I like; I copy and paste it into Evernote; I not only have the recipe, but my shopping list.

I don't use an app. I have all of my things alphabetized in an excel file. But I guess it would be a good idea to have an app on my phone to check if I'm out at the store. Might have to look into this Evernote thing a little more.

I love Evernote too! I'm working on getting all my stamp sets scanned in, so I also have images to know if I have anything too similar to what I'm looking at. I tag them with anything I can think of that describes the images in the set: specific animals - realistic or cartoon, types of greetings, hearts, stars, etc. I also use it for my sewing patterns, I either scan in the back or do a screen shot from the website so that I have the yardage requirements for all of my patterns with me all of the time! Totally awesome.
Evernote has been a great tool for me. I have bought doubles, but that is because I didn't check with Evernote first!

I downloaded Evernote but couldn't figure it out so i deleted it. I tried it a second time and still couldn't see how it worked so its finally deleted. Is it just me?
I have done it more than once. I get fairly upset when I do it also. But I am better about checking what I do have before I buy.
I don't think its age because I've always been like this. I have just gotten to the level of ownership that I can't keep track of it all.
It's time to make lists, or find a system of cataloging it so you can keep track of what you own. I liked the simplicity of the notebook idea. The thought of learning yet another software is a turn off, but Evernote does sound good. And the price is right.
