I need help and know there are some very talented people here. A friend's daughter has asked me to help her make her 16th birthday invitations. Of course there is a twist; she is not a girly-girl.
She likes black, hates pink, would love to get a tattoo (but can't yet), no lace, doesn't mind wearing a dress as long as it's "cool" (code for too sexy for a sixteen year-old), loves hot topic, sterling silver, not gold, can take or leave makeup, size 0 - but tough as rocks, loves 70's rock, country, and todays music too - favorite band IPC!
I am at a loss; I know she wants some thing "cool" unique and special. She is inviting her friends to a over-night at a hotel and supper at a Japanese (cook at your table) type restaurant. We don't need a bunch of invites, so they can be more detailed. I'm thinking about a dozen at the most.
I would appreciate any and all suggestions anyone might have. Please, please, please! This is not my style and I want her to LOVE them!
A black base to the card, with Bella done wearing blue jeans and a red top (find out if the birthday girl does red first..lol) and I think the card would be great!!
Thank you all for your suggestions..... The stampingbella stamp is fab, but not sure since I don't already own it - she is coming next weekend to make them.... I will see if a local store carries this brand or some thing Asian we could use.... I have nothing of either on hand.... Was hoping I could use some thing I already had... but I doubt it... Any ideas on the form of invite... like a pop-up, movement type of card, or some thing like that to make it special?
I did a birthday card for a 16 year old girl. It has a wide ribbon and sparkly stars. Might not be what you need, but take a peek... Sam's Birthday. It could inspire another idea.

If you love the Ipodabella why not send an email to Emily (go to the contact us section on her website www.stampingbella.com) and see how long it would take to ship. She just *might* be able to wave some Bella dust for you and get it in the UPS fast. Wouldn't hurt to send an email...tell her Oakville Mom sent you. :-)
OK, I was thinking WAY less girly than Bella, so this may not work for you. I found this in the gallery and thought that this card looked nice... Cherry Blossom Friend by tlfrank at Splitcoaststampers. The punched out cardstock reminds me of the screens at Japanese restaurants. I know for a fact that my JoAnn's has that stamp too, I saw it today (almost bought it!).
I would definately suggest something asian inspired. A dragon embossed in black like tatoo would be very cool. And you could add silver embossing, maybe for the text. Add a dash of red. Or use the skull and cross bone stuff that is popular right now. That may be more her style. If she is not a girly-girl then don't add too much too it. I would say keep it simple and maybe a little on the distressed (grungy) side.
Fiskars acquired a company called Ink by Steph. She's got clear acrylic stamps, rub-ons and paper that sound like they are right up this girl's alley. She's got skulls, crosses and tattoo-like stuff. So when they say "Ink," they mean the kind of "Ink" were all trying to keep off our kids, not the kind were putting down on paper!

Ooh Ooh! I just found this card in the gallery when I searched for "dragon"... You are Crunchy by Perdie1 at Splitcoaststampers. I love it! If you don't have too many cards to make maybe you could PM the maker of the card and ask for a few of the images to be stamped off for you (like a PIF). It wouldn't hurt to ask...
How about a black based card using some of the Stampin Up stamps like baroque motifs or doodle this. If they're done in the right colors they won't look girly and I've heard people say they've used them to inspire tatoos, not sure if you want to be inspiring tatoos at the 16th b-day party, but the birthday girl might like it! LOL! Good luck!

I'm not a girly girl either, but i LOVE the baroque motifs. I think that if you combined the baroque motif stamp with just the right skull and crossbones tattoo-y kind of stamp, it would be really cool. Maybe even emboss the baroque swirl in red on black. Definitely hot-topic-y. I think the flowery asian stuff is waaaay too girly. If you did do an asian theme, i'd say dragons is the way to go. And I would definitely stay away from the bellas--beautiful stamps, but extremely girly! I would also stay away from any kind of flower. Depending on her style, she might be okay with a more gothic kind of lace which could inspire a bg. Hope this all helps!!

Just to add I have known people that have set their printers to print with more ink (notice I haven't done it! ) and have been able to sprinkle embossing powder as it comes out of the inkjet printer - I think in this case if it missed a spot or two it would only add to the feel.
And just to add when I looked at these images with regard to the original post I was going - yes, yes that's it, that's what the girl is wanting!
I think a black themed card with your invited in grafitti font and then a skull or something like that. It goes with the hip teenage thing that girls are doing now where they are more gothic then girly. Michaels had some cool papers that had rock and roll type themes. They seemed to be all clearanced a couple of months ago but something like that could be really cool.
Here is something i would use as inspiration.
How about some black lace on the edge of something? Does she like camo? Maybe colored camo? YOu can get scrapbook paper in camo and other cool designs. How about safety pins through it?
