Well I was trying for some time to understand regional boxes with the PO as a friend kept telling me it is a lot less. When I asked at the PO they looked at me like I a Martian. They discontinued them this year but boxes were still available if you like those dimensions. This seems to have been replaced with something called priority "cubic" but those are only for commercial customers.
Now they have rolled out Ground Advantage anyone can use that is supposed to be 5 business days, does not fly (good for HAZMAT) and you get a track number...for far less than priority. I just sent my first one. Scroll down to comparison chart.
Fingers crossed. This could be an end to my kvetching for a proper parcel post return and to stop being forced into expensive priority. Parcel was still here-but it cost as much as priority so what's the point? You did not want to be around me when I heard that at the PO a couple years ago <snort> lol
It is also available via Stamps.com if you use that program.

I found Ground Advantage to be the best aka lowest priced option for two packages I mailed on Friday from my home, scheduled to be delivered Monday. Shipping cost for the heavier package traveling several states away cost less than $1 more than the package traveling in state. Satisfied customer here. My first experience with Ground Advantage is/was a positive experience. Priority rates with past shipments were higher priced and less efficient.

Used Ground Advantage yesterday for the first time. It was $5 cheaper than the next level which was Priority. It will take one day longer to reach it's destination. Works for me!

Thank you for this information. I find wide ranges between the two local post offices I use. One seems to send it the most expensive way and the other the cheapest way. Guess which one I use, if I can, for oversize envelopes.

I use pirateship.com. It shows rates for USPS and UPS and lets me choose, and the rates are discounted. Once the package has the label on it, I just have to drop it off, so no long waits in the PO line anymore. I used to print labels directly from the PO website, but pirateship is cheaper.

When you're at the Post Office, they should be giving you options, if not ask. Good luck!
At the one PO, they usually say, this has to go as a package and that's all there is to it. The other PO says, well this can go as a large envelope. If I get the gal at the first PO that's a card maker, she usually tries to go a cheaper route, but she's not always there and I don't always get her when she is as often there are 4-5 windows open. The other PO is small with only 2 windows and often just one person working, unless it is busy. Everyone there gives me the best deal.
I love the PO, but it is disappointing when you get uneven service like that esp when you are having to pay more for the shipping. I should not need a degree in PO services to be able to advocate for myself. sigh. And online is informative but limited.

Copied the following from an email I got from usps. I used the new enhanced click and ship and my priority padded envelope was $8.something vs the $10.something one pays at the post office. The post office employee was surprised when I handed her the package and she saw the prepaid price.

Reason: Formatting - deleted the double spaces between sections
Several years ago it was cheaper to do prepaid labels at home than at the P.O. and then that changed and everything was the same. Glad to hear there will be a price break again.
