Hey there! I'm Anna and have been making cards for about a year and a half. Got interested by a friend who kept sending me the prettiest stamped cards. I've always been crafty, and stamping has just really got a hold of me now! My problem is that I live in rural Alabama, with NO stamping shops anywhere near me at all. I found a SU demonstrator online, and she has been really good about getting me involved with SU, but I still haven't ever met her or been to a workshop! I literally have taught myself how to stamp, and am still pretty ignorant about a lot of things. For instance, I have yet to emboss anything! Wouldn't know how to start!! :(
It's really funny that I got into stamping after we moved back to Alabama, when we were up in the Seattle area, I knew nothing of it, and up there are so many great places to get stamps!! I get a lot of mine from A Muse and Rubber Soul in the mail. ANYway...I was just wondering if I became a SU demonstrator, it would put me in a better position to learn new things and get to meet other stampers? And do I become one by asking the SU demonstrator I have ordered from?
Sorry to sound so ignorant about the subject, but thought this would be the place to find out. It really is a bummer to hear about stamping workshops and classes, and I've never been to one and the closest place is about 3 hours away! I also know of absolutely no one who is interested in card making or stamping. Everyone loves my cards I give them, but they have never expressed an interest in the craft.
Look forward to learning lots of things on here, and any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Welcome, and I hope you do decide to sign up as a demonstrator. I signed up 4 years ago, because it was a big hobby of mine. I was easily spending $50 a month in shops, workshops, etc. so it certainly hasn't been hard to meet the quotas. You will meet lots of nice people in Stampin' Up. I'm sure there are demonstrators in your area that probably meet and get together. Too bad you are not closer to Texas. Invite others in (especially those who have complimented you on your cards) and show them what you know about stamping. You picked it up and I know they will too when they see just how easy and fun it is. It's a great way to get started. Don't forget to find people who are scrapbookers. They will easily see how stamping can be so easily incorporated into their pages. Alphabet sets vs. stickers-----no comparison. For one thing you'll always have the correct number of letters you need because all you have to do is stamp another. Stamps are sooo versitile and once people see that, it is a real selling point!!!

Welcome to SCS, Anna!!!!
You've posed some interesting questions. Yes!! you should consider becoming a demo yourself. You can get demo info from the demo you mentioned. Have you tried the demo locator on the SU website www.stampinup.com ? It's good to have some knowledge of the type of demo she is and how she reponds to your inquiry will help with that. Long distance learning can work just fine. Yes, you can meet all kinds of wonderful folk in the stamping world.
SU has tremendous support and training for its demos. The starter kit contains videos and copies of the monthly magazine. It's filled with ideas. If you have the little technique book that comes free with every order, it's a great place to start with techniques. Then, of course, there's the resource part of this site and so many gallery samples it will make your head swim.
If you need some more info, just PM me.
Glad you found us.......this site alone will keep you plenty busy.

So I just buy it through the demonstrator that I do know? This may sound silly, but what benefits do the demonstrators have? Is it a discount off the product, or do you also make a profit of your sales.
Do demonstrators have the workshops in their homes, or do you take the class to the customer? I know I sound stupid, but like I said before, I've NEVER been to one!! :(
Thanks for the advice.
Anna,
It's hard to get the picture about the whole demo thing without a model.
So.....You buy a starter kit through a demo. Cost is $199. If you look at the SU website - there's a new online catalog. Inside the back cover is all the info about what comes with the starter kit. You can have workshops in your home or others or stamp camps or technique classes in your own home. You must sell $300 of product each quarter (3 months) to stay active. As a demo you receive 20% instant income off all product you order - either for yourself or your customers. Each month you get a rebate check - size depends on your sales.
There's info on the SU site about the opportunities as a SU demo.

You actually can "sign up" under any SU! demonstrator you prefer; you are ordering the kit, however, directly from SU!, and all that info is in the Recruit packet, which you can request from your SU! demonstrator, or, you can seek one out in closer proximity to you on the SU! locator system, and request that she send it out.
Virtually all my downline are long-distance, and as someone mentioned, you can easily be trained either way, but if you wish to attend local workshops to get a better understanding and have face to face contact with a potential upline before you determine who you wish to sign up under, the locator system will enable you to do that.
This may sound silly, but what benefits do the demonstrators have? Is it a discount off the product, or do you also make a profit of your sales.
Yes, you earn a 20% discount on all your purchases, and you have a basic profit scale of 20% on sales to others, that can increase depending on YOUR sales levels, and whether or not you have any "downline" underneath you--and THEIR sales levels. The recruit packet has a nice brochure that explains all those details.
Do demonstrators have the workshops in their homes, or do you take the class to the customer? I know I sound stupid, but like I said before, I've NEVER been to one!! :(
Thanks for the advice.
In your kit you will receive a Training DVD that will help you determine what format you would like to use: Some demonstrators do in-home (at a hostess's home) workshops, hold classes in their own homes, and some do not hold any kinds of classes or workshops at all--preferring to purchase only for discount, and taking orders from friends/fellow stampers. Your upline will be able to assist you in making these decisions.
There is a great deal of flexibility, depending on your preferences and goals.
HTH,

SO, I could actually order my demo kit from you or anyone else on here?
Y'all have been so helpful! You girls ROCK! Thanks soooo much.
Yes, Anna!
What you might consider doing, is posting a request here on the SCS forums that you are seeking an SU! demonstrator near you and for them to contact you via the Private Message system here at SCS*, if it is important to you to be able to meet your potential upline in person, and perhaps attend an actual workshop, etc.
The above might be someone very near you that offers meetings to her downline, etc. and you would then have access to that because you were in physical proximity. Does that make sense?
*The only reason I suggest it, is that SU! policy does not permit demonstrators to solicit sales nor recruits via the internet. But YOU can contact any demonstrator you wish and ask for information. If you post, be prepared that you may receive many PMs from local demonstrators, and you will then have several you can meet, chat with, and determine who would be a good match for you and your needs?
You are under no obligation to sign up with whomever gives you the information, however, as a courtesy, I always think it's so nice, if you end up signing up with someone other than the demonstrator you originally requested them from, that you return those materials to her , so she can use them in the future.

Oh yeah, I'm hooked big time. I've got quite the collection of stamps, and no where to put them! LOL I'm always online looking at what's new to buy. My long distance bill to a couple of stores up in WA state was pitiful!! There is also several new SU sets I'd LOVE to have.
I thought of another question, when you get your demo kit, do you choose the stamp sets you'd like to get. And also, if I decided to get my demo from someone on here, would I just email them privately to get in touch for the sale? I've already decided that is going to be my Christmas present this year.

WA state does indeed ROCK with rubbah! ;)
when you get your demo kit, do you choose the stamp sets you'd like to get.
The kit has pre-selected stamp sets, and certain accessories, such as ink pad colors, that CAN be swapped out as long as their price value is the same (in other words, you can substitute a set at equal or lesser value on all items that they permit a substitution. Some items, such as business order forms, etc. and non-stamp set/ink pad accessories are "fixed" and you can't alter those.)
And also, if I decided to get my demo from someone on here, would I just email them privately to get in touch for the sale? I've already decided that is going to be my Christmas present this year.
Yes, you can privately contact any demonstrator you wish here at SCS.
And, Merry Christmas to you! ;) Great gift! LOL!

Next stupid question, since I'm not familiar with this site, how do I privately contact someone...LOL Just shout out my email?
And why does it say under my name I'm a cardstock collector??? I tried to find the place to edit that in my profile, but couldn't seem to figure it out.

You can use the PM (Private Message system) here at SCS. To the left of any text box, you'll see the name of the poster. Click on that name and a menu will drop down.
You will see options to PM that individual or email that individual, etc. Click on the option you want to use. If you click PM, you will be taken right to your UserCP and a box to compose a message will automatically open up. then, "submit".
To CHECK on your PMs for responses, you need to be in the forums (logged in), and you can click on the "UserCP button" along the far left of the blue bar (the blue bar below the pale orange bar, near the top of your window).
Is that clear as mud? ;)

PS. You can also scroll up the screen, here in the forums, until you see "Welcome alabama-stampa". Beneath that, you'll see "private messages". If you click on that, it will take you to your private messages, where you'll see your "inbox", etc. On the menu to the left, you'll see an option to "send a new message". Click on that, a text box will open.
You will have to manually enter the SCS userID you wish to PM.
Any time you wish to view your PMs received or sent, just click on that same "private messages" button, under your "Welcome alabama-stampa".

Oh, yeah. I don't think you can change that? It's based on the number of posts you have and will change as your post numbers increase! It's kinda fun, really! Just keep postin' and interacting and one day you'll go "Hey, I'm a Polyshrink Queen!!!" or something like that . . . I forget where the all the information about how many posts = which titles . . . I'm sure it's somewhere around this big place! ;)
