Well, I now have the catty and started flipping through it when it occurred to me that I want to know exactly how much the prices went up. Boy was it an eye-opener!!!

I picked out sets randomly. Some that are widely used by a lot of people and some that Id never use, but if theyre in the catalog, someone must be buying them right?

So . . . heres what I concluded.

Prices went up anywhere from 4% to a whopping 21.5%

There didnt seem to be any rhyme or reason to the % of increase per product except that those products with the greatest immediate revenue gain (most popular stamps, or still newer stamp sets) were the ones targeted for the biggest increase. These are the cash cows.

The whole exercise really solidified my position that my product/supplier loyalty has some very rigid limitations and I dont care how good the paper and rubber is, there are plenty of other suppliers out there who are hungry for my business. Oh happy day for them!!

The straw that broke this camels back was SU! was VERY expensive even before, but this new pricing just shoved it right out of my shopping arena.

So, of course I did the math, and heres what I found:

WOW! Wenchie, you did a TON of comparisons for us. Sadly, it only confirms that Stampin' Up doesn't seem terribly concerned whether Canadians buy from them or not. As you pointed out, there are lots of companies that will be grateful for the $700-$1000 I spend annually on craft stuff.

Thanks for all your hard work, Wenchie!

Holy Hannah Wenchie,

Compared to you I have been completed unproductive today...thanks for taking the time to go through the catty and compare the prices. Awesome job!!!!

The one thing that I noticed was how many stamp sets were well over the $40 mark. Price perception is an unbelievably strong motivator for customers. For example, $37.95 for a stamp set didn't really bother me all that much. In my consumer driven mind, it was still in the $30 range and therefore I felt confortable buying it. However, once you take that same stamp set and make it $43.95, that set doesn't seem that far off the $50 mark which is, in my mind, a VERY expensive stamp set! (And that's not even factoring in shipping and tax!)

That is why retailers prefer to price an item at, let's say, $39.99 as opposed to $40.00, as statistically, customer perception is FAR more favorable towards the $39.99 item- even though there is only a one cent difference. Customers see that the item is still in the $30 range as opposed to the $40 dollar range. This is very basic marketing- I have known this for YEARS.

Customers are very price sensitive right now so this increase in price might really affect how they view SU's products. I know it's affected my perception!

Still haven't received a response to my initial email. I even checked my spam and deleted files to make sure it didn't go there by accident.
SU, if you want my business you're going to have to respond to my email!

Wow, how ridiculous are those price increases! Ya, I got a 3% cost of living raise at work this past June ... based on that, I certainly cant afford these new prices!

Sad to say I won't be buying ANYTHING from the new catty unless I run out of cardstock. No stamps, no designer paper, no embellies...I can't believe that the mini library clips are $18.95. When I add on shipping and HST that comes to $23.55 or over 98 cents each! makes for a very expensive embellishment on a card! I thought the prices were bad last year but this is insane! Oh, and I never got a cost of living increase in salary at all this year. Sorry SU! - it's not your products, it's the prices.

Thanks so much Wenchie!! It is really ridiculous. I feel that SU does not really want us for customers - or we are least second class customers to them. I will purchasing a lot less from SU! I feel badly for my demo. Not her fault.

I too will be buying less from SU this year, the prices have just gotten too steep for me. I will also feel bad for my demo, because she is so great ... I have also been stamping for about 5 years now and I just dont NEED a ton of new sets anymore ...

Did anyone send a link to this thread to SU! as part of their email?

WOW Wenchie - that is quite the list and I thank you for taking the time to work this out. It has now confirmed that my stamping dollars will be spent on companies other than SU. Thankfully when I looked through the new catty there was only one stamp set that jumped out at me....and even that one I can live without.

Feel free. I'd double check the #'s though, just to be on the safe side.

Just an update...it's been a week and a half since I sent my "uncanned" response to SU's canned response to my concerns regarding the Canadian Catty price increases- still no response...I think I scared them...hahaha.

I'm with all of you! It has bothered me to no end since the new catty came out and I saw the prices! Why is it that the Canadians seem to always get the ****ty end of the stick? Wouldn't it be cheaper say...if we had an American demo and paid in American dollars at the American price? Even the shipping would probably be cheaper! Doesn't Stampin Up realize that we as Canadian's will get so ticked that we will no longer support them!? I will no longer be buying Stampin Up. And it doesn't surprise me that they have not responded. Cowards that they are!

and I agree with the person (sorry I can't remember her name) that wrote that we already HAVE HIGH prices even in old cad. catty compare to our US friend's!!!
I too feel like SU! is treating us like second rate people...

Is there a way at all to have your list published where EVERYONE here on SCS can see it??????
I think it would make a MAJOR impact to all....and educate most!;)

Exclamation Catties: USA vs CAD

Wow! That is quite a price increase for you Canadians. I'll have to check a few stamp sets and see if there is a comparable price increase here in the states.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Paola, I just did a random check of about 20 stamp sets and found only 2 that had a price increase and the increase was only $1.00 about a 3 percent increase. Quite a difference between the Canadian and American catalogs.__________________

From me aka Paola (SCS=Sama):
The two comments above are from my dear friend Judy(JAM123) that lives in Arizona.
I'm pretty sure she won't mind me sharing her finding with all of you gals....;)
quite difference in the increase between USA catty only 3%!!!) and our Canadian one!!!
Now I have more reason to feel bitter toward SU! treatment of their Canadian customers!!!

I have written Stampin Up again with Wenchie's brilliant findings, double checked as per her request. Below is my letter to them. I enter Wenchie's numbers into a excel spreadsheet of which I attached to the letter.

Dear Stampin Up
Thank for you for your response earlier. Recently a stamper posted on Splitcoast, a list that detailed the exact percentage increases. I asked if I could send her findings to you. Below is her findings that she posted on the Splitcoast site. I include my attachment in excel. The percentages are correct. Those people that have commented are upset with this increase. I am very sure there are more Canadians that will not comment but just will not purchase any more.
I send you this to assist you in understanding that sales could very well drop in Canada due to this increase. It is your business hopefully some changes will be made.

Thank you
Below is the discussion on Splitcoast.

Thank you. Could I email your findings to Stampin Up?

Feel free. I'd double check the #'s though, just to be on the safe side.

Well, I now have the catty and started flipping through it when it occurred to me that I want to know exactly how much the prices went up. Boy was it an eye-opener!!!

I picked out sets randomly. Some that are widely used by a lot of people and some that I’d never use, but if they’re in the catalog, someone must be buying them right?

So . . . here’s what I concluded.

Prices went up anywhere from 4% to a whopping 21.5%

There didn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason to the % of increase per product except that those products with the greatest immediate revenue gain (most popular stamps, or still newer stamp sets) were the ones targeted for the biggest increase. These are the cash cows.

The whole exercise really solidified my position that my product/supplier loyalty has some very rigid limitations and I don’t care how good the paper and rubber is, there are plenty of other suppliers out there who are hungry for my business. Oh happy day for them!!

The straw that broke this camels back was SU! was VERY expensive even before, but this new pricing just shoved it right out of my shopping arena.

So, of course I did the math, and here’s what I found:

I'm not a demo, but have been a loyal SU customer for several years. I also have owned a US based franchise in Canada so I'm not new to the US -CDN price differences and I HATE it and am right in there with you all complaining! Due to DH's early retirement aka loosing his job to a US based company, my spending habits have already changed and will be changing drastically again in a few weeks, sadly SU products are at the top of the list. I was part of the letter writing campaign a couple of years ago and got the same form letter as everyone else did and I'm sorry I don't still have a copy of it because I think it's word for word of this year's response. They basically blew off the exchange rate and blamed all the other duty and expenses then too. BUT we did get lower prices eventually. Stirring the pot here and getting others upset and yelling "I'm ticked off too" in unison doesn't accomplish anything, only listening to yourself rant. For those who haven't written to SU yet, please direct your energy and complaints directly to SU. Go to the source. Walking away without giving a reason doesn't help anyone and only makes your demo think she's failing you. Is she the one you want to punish? High prices are all part of customer service, let them know and when they send back a form letter, they give you a chance to ask more questions, be a pain in their side and respond with your rants. Be heard! Every one of you. I was invited to a district event of demos last weekend, trust me SU knows Canadian sales are down. Maybe you think you can't personally do something about it, but collectively we can. It's time we quiet polite Canadians let them know we're p o'd.

What I'd really like to know, how many Canadian demos and customers are there compared to the US. If SU had put the US prices up as much as our prices - could you imagine the screaming head office would be hearing and how long would the company last? What would their reaction be to $40. - $50.00 stamp sets be? Yeah, let's sock it to the Canadians. Btw, we're not alone, not that makes anyone feel better, I had a look at the Australian catalogue a couple of weeks ago, and I was absolutely shocked at their catalogue prices.

in two weeks i will be on maternity leave and then after my benefits run out i am unemployed. so stampin up will be getting even less of my money than they were before after the last increase. i don't buy the bs they are throwing around. i've got work experience with US and Canadian pricing. there are other US companies much more Canadian friendly, as well as my LSS gets great stuff.

Thanks Gracey'sGirl for sending Wenchie's numbers in a follow up email - perhaps (though I doubt it) they will see the absurdity in the whole situation and also see how greedy they are looking right now!

I have also sent ANOTHER follow-up email asking why they haven't responded to my first follow-up email.

As I see it- this is all about choices- SU can choose to keep their Canadian prices well above the US ones...and we can choose to take our business elsewhere!

Thanks GracieGirl. It'll be interesting to see if you get a response at all.

I've been thinking about this whole issue and I still keep coming back to the notion that SU! probably has had some viable reasons for increasing prices. However, the Canadian Dollar is no longer the driving factor, and even if it was, the variable increases don't support that argument. The cost of manufacturing could be higher now, but then that added cost should rightfully be spread across their entire customer base globally and not a select few. Taxes and duties and brokerage fees cannot be attibuted as those rates don't change. Canadian Corporate taxes aren't to blame either because those also have not changed. Can't blame the recession either. We're in our own recession. If Canada was the land of milk and honey, everyone would be moving here!

As a business, sure, they can do what they want, just as we as consumers do what we want. What bothers me more is that they continue to essentially ignore our complaints and avoid any sort of meaningful dialogue. Their avoidance, in my opinion is more damaging than their price hikes. Had they been straight up and explained their position, to even just one consumer, the tide might have turned in their favor. The fact that they haven't just further cultivates the fat . . . dumb . . . and happy perception I have of them and their business model.

Form letters do not give me a warm, fuzzy feeling. Form letters do not make me feel like a valued customer. Form letters full of useless rhetoric and language meant to distract are a waste of their time and mine.

I will likely now be sending a letter of some sort to SU!, but, the damage is already done. Even if they adjust the pricing, I don't think I'd be motivated to return as a customer. For me, they've waited too long. And as long as I, as a consumer feel like they threw me under the bus is not something I'll soon forget.

An ostrich can keep it's head in the ground only so long. But who knows, it might work for them. Wait it out, ride the storm and it'll blow over. People will forget this and keep shopping anyway. Maybe they're waiting for the few vocal people here in this thread to just shut the he!! up.

Oh, and here's something else. Someone on my own forum asked "why did SU! tell us Demos that the increase was a straight 10% across the board?" Some things just make you go hmmmmmmmm . . . . I think they thought that the Demo's would make like lemmings and just believe what they were told. And truthfully? There wasn't a single demo that came forward saying that they did the math, or that they had any questions or concerns. Not publicly anyways. As has been mentioned before, the unfortunate part of all this is that the Demos are the ones who'll feel the crunch first. Many customers are already only meeting their monthly minimums. There'll be those who just drop out and walk away.

By the sounds of things SU! has made no effort to enter into meaningful dialogue with either their customers OR their demos. Demo's may not be on the payroll, per se, however they are the front person representing the company. It looks like they've been tossed to the sharks and put in a position of having to think up excuses to defend someone who won't stand behind them. It's kind of hard to swim with one hand tied behind your back. If I was a demo I'd be really questioning my own loyalty and ability to support a company that won't support me.

Your welcome Wenchie,

Your figures were correct. I agree with your fat dumb and happy comment. It is, I believe what they think of us. I just wanted to rid them of that thought with your findings. I still like their product. It does however make you question supporting a company who does not value their consumers. I really feel for the demos.

It will be interesting to see if they make price adjustments in the mini catalogues without commenting to our letters. My guess is they will. (one can hope)

The straw that broke the back for me was that the prices were already higher than the US. This for me, accounted for the dollar difference. To add further price increases to the extent SU did just for me adds up to greed.

Another thought I had was.... I wonder if they no longer want to go global? Saying that sales are down would give them the excuse to shut down.

I am waiting for my LAST order to come. I heard that the prices would increase so got the things I needed (mostly paper and ink). That is the last Canadian dollar they will get of mine. It makes me sad that SU really doesn't give a rat's butt about their Canadian demos or their Canadian customers. There are lots of American companies willing to treat us with the respect we deserve. Too bad SU..as far as I am concerned you have just lost another customer!!

There wasn't a single demo that came forward saying that they did the math, or that they had any questions or concerns. Not publicly anyways. ...
Well, in defense, I was waiting for the catalogue so I could see the actual price increases. And no, I did not do the math. I could see at a glance that things were higher than the 10% we were initially told. We kept our concerns in the demo forums so that we could see what each was saying and feeling rather than bringing it into the general stamping forum. Sorry you have a problem with us not dealing with it "publicly".

Well, I am aware of a few Demos that have communicated their concerns to SU. I imagine that you are all caught between a rock and a hard place due to the fact that you are representatives of the company and as a result I'm sure that it would be more difficult for you to air your opinions in the public forums. However, I have confidence that you (and many more Demos) have certainly had their say with SU (behind the scenes) since these price increases affect your businesses the most.

So, just to check- has anyone that sent up a followup letter to SU heard back from them yet?

Well, at least that does not seem to be as much of a canned letter........ maybe SU is actually hearing Canadians???? What do you think?

I did send a letter and I have not heard anything. But still hoping to... If I do not get a response by the end of the week, I will be sending the letter back... With another comment. I too love the SU product line and have been relatively faithful to them. I just checked my orders, and for the last 4 years I have been spending at least $1000 per year. that too me is a HUGE hunk of orders that they will not be seeing this year. I know I will buy the basics... card stock in choc chip, cream, navy, white and black... but other than that, I will be using my existing stamps, inks and designer papers. Sorry SU, maybe next catalog...

One can hope this is the case. The true test for me is when the holiday mini comes out and we see the prices. If they are lower then they listened, if the prices remain the same, they simply do not care.

I truly believe that if sales go down in Canada within the next few months they will have no choice but to adjust prices. How can you tell my first order will not be for a while, if ever.

it's unlikely that you'd see the change in print that quickly. Unfortunately, they work months ahead of time and so these would have been at the printer probably just before the new catalogue came out ...

I've sent in my two bits as well. Hopefully we'll see a positive result, eh?
